To stop an app that is still downloading or updating, find its icon on the Home Screen, touch and hold it, then choose Cancel Download. If the app has finished installing, delete it instead; that is a separate action.
How do I cancel an app download on my iPhone or iPad?
- Go to the Home Screen and find the app whose icon shows download progress.
- Touch and hold the app icon to open its contextual menu.
- Tap Cancel Download.

Can I cancel an app update?
Yes, while the update is still in progress, use the same Home Screen menu and select Cancel Download. For an update, iDownloadBlog says tapping the icon first pauses the progress bar; then touch and hold it to open the menu. The guide also says holding the icon without pausing may work. If Cancel Download does not appear, OS X Daily notes that the menu option might be unavailable while the icon is still loading; try again when the contextual menu is available.
What if the app has already installed?
Once installation is complete, there is no in-progress download to cancel. To remove the app, Apple’s app removal instructions, published September 14, 2026, say to touch and hold the app, tap Remove App, tap Delete App, then confirm with Delete. Some built-in apps cannot be deleted, and Screen Time restrictions or device management may prevent deletion.

Deleting an app does not automatically cancel an in-app subscription. If your goal is to stop recurring billing, manage the subscription separately using Apple’s subscription cancellation instructions.
How do I stop future automatic downloads or updates?
To change automatic behavior on iPhone, open Settings > Apps > App Store. Apple’s iPhone user guide distinguishes these controls:

- App Updates: controls automatic app updates.
These settings affect future automatic activity; they are separate from cancelling a download already in progress. Screen Time’s Content & Privacy Restrictions also includes controls for installing or deleting apps.

If you want the app to finish, do not choose Cancel Download. Apple’s download and update troubleshooting guide, published March 30, 2026, recommends choosing Prioritize Download from the Home Screen menu, restarting the device, or contacting Apple Support if the issue continues. Prioritize Download is a troubleshooting action, not a cancellation option.
