To calibrate a pen in Windows 11, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input. In the legacy Tablet PC Settings utility, select Setup to identify the display, then choose Pen input and follow the on-screen markers.
Windows 11 does not expose screen-coordinate calibration in the modern Pen & Windows Ink Settings page. Calibration can correct pen-position offsets, but it will not fix pressure, tilt, or unsupported hardware.
What Windows 11 pen calibration changes
Calibration corrects the relationship between the pen tip and the screen coordinates. For example, if you touch the top-left corner but the ink appears several millimeters away, calibration may correct that offset.
It does not normally fix pen pressure, tilt recognition, hover distance, palm rejection, shortcut buttons, or a pen that is incompatible with the device. Those features depend on the digitizer, pen protocol, drivers, firmware, and the application being used.

Calibrate a pen in Windows 11
- Open Control Panel. You can search for it from Start.
- Select Hardware and Sound.
- Select Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input.
- In the Tablet PC Settings window, select Setup and follow the prompts to identify the display receiving pen input.
- When Windows asks which input to configure, select Pen input.
- Touch the center of every on-screen calibration marker with the pen. Keep the pen as perpendicular to the display as is practical and avoid tapping outside the target.
- Apply or save the calibration when the wizard finishes.
Test the pen in an application such as OneNote, Sticky Notes, or Paint. Draw near the edges and corners as well as in the middle of the screen. If the pointer is still consistently offset, repeat the calibration carefully or reset it and start again.
Fastest way to open the calibration tool
In Windows Search, type Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input, then select Open. This opens the same Tablet PC Settings utility without navigating through Control Panel.
Launch calibration with a command
Windows includes the calibration program tabcal.exe. Press Windows + R, type tabcal.exe, and press Enter.
The executable is normally located at C:\Windows\System32\tabcal.exe. On a computer without a supported pen or touch digitizer, the command may show an error or fail to provide a useful calibration target. It cannot add pen capability to a display that has no compatible digitizer.

- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Hardware and Sound > Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input.
- In Tablet PC Settings, select Reset.
- Select OK.
- Restart the computer, then test the pen again.
Resetting removes the custom calibration. It will not repair a defective digitizer, an unsupported pen, missing firmware, or a driver problem.
Fix pen input assigned to the wrong monitor
With two or more monitors connected, Windows can associate pen or touch input with the wrong display. In that situation, use Setup before calibrating.
- Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input.
- Select Setup.
- Follow the prompts to identify the display that should receive pen input.
- After the display assignment is correct, return to the utility and choose the pen calibration option.
- Select Pen input and calibrate the selected display.
Setup assigns the input device to a display; Pen input calibrates coordinates on that display. They are separate operations.

The current Windows 11 pen settings are at Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink. Microsoft documents options there such as your writing hand and pen shortcut-button actions. It is not the screen-coordinate calibration wizard.

Some instructions incorrectly say to open that page and select Calibrate. The calibration wizard remains in the legacy Tablet PC Settings interface in Control Panel.
Likewise, the Windows Ink or pen menu is not the calibration tool. It provides pen-related settings and app shortcuts, while coordinate calibration remains in Control Panel.
Check whether Windows detects the touchscreen
If Search and Control Panel do not show Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input, first verify that the device has a pen or touch digitizer. If Windows reports No pen or touch input is available for this display, that display does not currently provide Windows pen or touch input for calibration.

In Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices and look for HID-compliant touch screen. If it is disabled, right-click it and select Enable device.

If the touchscreen or pen still fails, reinstall the device entry:
- In Device Manager, right-click HID-compliant touch screen.
- Select Uninstall device, then confirm Uninstall.
- Open the Action menu and select Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart Windows and test the pen or touchscreen.
Device names and recovery steps can vary by manufacturer. On Surface devices, missing Surface Touch firmware or HID-compliant touchscreen drivers can also prevent pen input; install the appropriate Surface updates if the problem remains.
When calibration is not the real problem

Bluetooth pairing is separate from coordinate calibration. A pen may need Bluetooth for shortcut buttons and other functions, but ordinary contact detection and screen-coordinate calibration are handled by the digitizer and Tablet PC Settings.
Before calibrating
- Connect the display or dock exactly as you normally use it, especially when multiple monitors are involved.
- Use the pen you intend to use after calibration.
- Remove anything that changes the screen position, such as a temporary screen protector, if it is interfering with contact.
- Calibrate only the input type you need. Choose Pen input for a stylus and Touch input for finger coordinates.
- Do not select Touch input as a substitute for pen calibration. The wizard has separate settings for the two input methods.

Can I calibrate a Windows 11 pen from Settings?
Not through the current Pen & Windows Ink page. That page handles pen preferences and shortcut actions. Use Control Panel for screen-coordinate calibration.
Should I choose Pen input or Touch input?
Choose Pen input when calibrating a stylus. Choose Touch input only when calibrating finger-touch coordinates.
