Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start by checking System Settings > Displays: if your Mac offers a Color profile menu, you can use Display Calibrator Assistant; if a supported MacBook Pro offers presets or reference modes, choose the mode that matches your work first. Most people using a Mac in a typical home or office do not need to calibrate the display.
Identify which display controls your MacBook has
Open System Settings > Displays and select the built-in display. The available controls depend on the Mac model and macOS release, so do not expect every MacBook to show the same menus.
- If you see Color profile, the profile-based Display Calibrator Assistant route is available.
- If you see Preset or reference modes on a supported MacBook Pro, inspect those before creating a custom calibration. A mode designed for your delivery target is usually the more appropriate starting point.
Some Macs use reference modes rather than color profiles. Apple documents custom reference-mode controls for Apple Pro Display XDR, Studio Display XDR, Studio Display, and 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro models from 2021 or later; this should not be generalized to MacBook Air or every MacBook generation.
Choose the right calibration approach
| Approach | Best fit | Instrument | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep the recommended profile | Typical use when colors already look acceptable | None | Apple says its recommended default profile usually does not need changing. |
| Display Calibrator Assistant | A profile-based Mac when you need a custom calibrated profile | The assistant instructions do not specify an instrument as required | Menu availability and adjustment prompts vary by display and macOS. |
| Built-in preset or reference mode | A supported newer MacBook Pro with a known media or production target | None to select a preset | The mode needs to match both the intended media and viewing conditions. |
| Pro Display Calibrator Full Calibration | A supported display that needs measured recalibration | Compatible colorimeter or spectroradiometer | Confirm display and instrument compatibility; the procedure can take substantial time. |
Calibrate a profile-based MacBook with Display Calibrator Assistant
- Open System Settings > Displays.
- Open the menu next to Color profile and choose Customize.
- Select the Add button to open Display Calibrator Assistant.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. The assistant creates a calibrated color profile and assigns it to the display automatically.
The number of adjustments varies by display type. A colorimeter is not a prerequisite for opening this assistant: Apple’s documented assistant instructions do not require one. Apple also says calibration is usually unnecessary for a Mac used in a typical home or office environment.

Select a preset or reference mode on a supported MacBook Pro
For supported MacBook Pro displays, use a preset or reference mode that corresponds to the output you are preparing, such as web or typical computer display, photography, or a specified video workflow. Presets set display parameters including color space, white point, gamma, and brightness. Choose based on the target rather than trying to build a custom mode by guesswork.
Reference modes are intended for controlled production conditions. A mode selected for the wrong media type or used under unsuitable viewing conditions may produce unsatisfactory results. Apple’s available mode and customization controls vary by device.

Use measured recalibration when the display and workflow support it
On a supported display, open System Settings > Displays, select the display, choose Preset, then choose Calibrate Display to open Pro Display Calibrator. Check Apple’s current instructions and verify compatibility for the exact display and measurement instrument before starting.
Full Calibration
Full Calibration measures and recalibrates white point, primaries, luminance, and gamma response. It requires a compatible colorimeter or spectroradiometer. Apple says the process may take up to two hours, including a 30-minute warm-up; that is a stated maximum for this procedure, not a typical duration for every calibration workflow.

Fine-Tune Calibration
Fine-Tune Calibration is a quicker measured adjustment of white point and luminance toward expected target values. For MacBook Pro and Studio Display XDR, Apple recommends running a separate Fine-Tune Calibration for each reference mode after Full Calibration.
Visual Fine-Tune
Visual Fine-Tune adjusts white point by eye. It is distinct from the measured full procedure and does not replace the compatible measuring instrument required for Full Calibration.

Keep viewing conditions consistent when judging color
Color perception changes with ambient lighting, screen position and viewing angle, and display age. For critical evaluation, keep the room lighting and your viewing position steady. Calibration does not guarantee that colors will look the same in every room or that a display will match a printed result; choose a mode and viewing environment suited to the output you need.
