There is no single GST formula for every online order: the country, whether the goods are domestic or imported, the goods’ tax status, and how delivery is treated all matter. For an Australian order of wholly taxable goods, GST is generally 1/11 of the GST-inclusive price plus delivery; Singapore import GST can include postage, insurance, freight and customs duty. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a universal rule.

Start with the country and how the order is supplied

Buying online does not, by itself, decide how GST applies. First identify the country whose tax rules apply and whether the order is a domestic sale, an import, or a delivery service supplied separately. Singapore’s Inland Revenue Authority says the transaction medium does not change the GST rules for supplies, while imports and certain e-commerce transactions have their own rules: IRAS guidance on GST on imported goods.

  • Check whether the displayed product price includes GST or excludes it.
  • Check whether delivery is included in the goods price or charged separately.
  • For a mixed basket, identify which items are taxable or GST-free in that country.
  • For imports, check the customs valuation, any duty, and whether the marketplace or overseas seller collects GST.

The examples below show why those details matter. They do not determine the tax on an order in a different country.

Australian domestic orders: calculate GST on taxable goods and delivery

For wholly taxable goods sold in Australia at a GST-inclusive price, the Australian Taxation Office’s method is to divide the total consideration—including delivery—by 11. In other words, GST = (GST-inclusive goods price + delivery charge) ÷ 11. This method assumes the stated amount is GST-inclusive; it is not the formula for adding GST to a GST-exclusive price.

All goods are taxable

If taxable goods cost A$110 and delivery is A$11, the GST-inclusive total is A$121. GST is A$121 ÷ 11 = A$11. The ATO’s ruling applies the 1/11 method to the total consideration when all goods are taxable, including a separately stated delivery fee. See ATO GSTD 2002/3.

The basket includes GST-free goods

When taxable and GST-free goods are supplied together, the taxable part—not the whole order—is used for the calculation. If delivery is separately charged, make a reasonable apportionment of that fee between the taxable and GST-free goods. GST is 1/11 of the taxable-goods price plus 1/11 of the delivery portion attributable to those taxable goods.

For example, if taxable goods are A$110, GST-free goods are A$50, and A$16 delivery is reasonably apportioned as A$11 to the taxable goods and A$5 to the GST-free goods, the GST calculation is (A$110 + A$11) ÷ 11 = A$11. The figures illustrate the method; the appropriate delivery allocation depends on the circumstances.

Delivery is included in the goods price

A delivery amount does not drop out of the calculation merely because it is bundled into the goods price. Where taxable and non-taxable parts are mixed, the ATO ruling says the total consideration still needs to be apportioned. The ruling also distinguishes a separate delivery service: “Where you supply a delivery service that is a separate supply, or a separate part of a mixed supply, the supply of the service will be taxable regardless of whether it is associated with the supply of taxable or non-taxable goods.” — ATO, GSTD 2002/3, paragraph 6.

Singapore imports: include postage, freight and applicable duty

For goods imported into Singapore, IRAS says GST is calculated on the CIF value (cost, insurance and freight) plus customs duties payable. Postage counts as part of freight. Its consumer guidance gives a 9% GST rate and this worked example: goods S$450 + insurance and freight S$50 + customs duty S$50 = S$550 taxable value; S$550 × 9% = S$49.50 GST. The 9% rate is stated in IRAS consumer guidance accessed in 2026; check the current rate and import rules before relying on it for a purchase.

IRAS says air or post imports with a CIF value of S$400 or below generally receive import GST relief, with exceptions for intoxicating liquors and tobacco. If an overseas supplier is registered in Singapore, GST may instead be charged at checkout. The guidance states that air or post imports above S$400 are taxed on the full goods value, while sea and land imports do not receive the described relief. See IRAS’s import guidance for the applicable conditions and procedures.

India: a local delivery service is not the same as every order’s shipping fee

India’s Ministry of Finance FAQ states that local delivery services are taxable at 18%. It assigns payment responsibility according to the supplier and transaction: a registered local delivery-service supplier pays GST when supplying directly or through an e-commerce operator; if the supplier is not liable to register and supplies through an e-commerce operator, the operator pays under section 9(5). This concerns the local delivery service described in the FAQ; it does not establish that every online order’s delivery charge is separately taxed at 18%. The 18% figure is from the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, 2025 FAQ: official FAQ on GST on e-commerce and local delivery services.

What to check on an actual order

  • Confirm the destination country and whether the order crosses a border.
  • Look for a tax line on the checkout page or invoice and determine whether displayed prices are tax-inclusive.
  • For imports, check whether shipping, insurance, customs duty, or import GST is collected at checkout or on arrival.
  • For mixed baskets, do not assume the delivery charge is allocated entirely to taxable goods; the applicable rules may require apportionment.
  • Use the relevant tax authority’s current guidance for product-specific treatment, thresholds, reliefs, and collection rules.
