There is no universal crypto liquidation-price formula. Your estimate depends on the exchange, contract type, long or short direction, isolated or cross margin, maintenance-margin tier, fees and account state. Before placing an order, use the formula or calculator for the exact contract you plan to trade, then compare its result with the exchange’s order-entry display. Treat that figure as an estimate, not a guaranteed liquidation threshold.
How do I calculate my liquidation price before opening a leveraged trade?
Work through these checks in order. A calculation is only meaningful when its contract, margin and fee assumptions match the position you intend to open.
- Identify the contract and direction. Confirm whether the contract is linear (such as USDT- or USDC-margined) or inverse (coin-margined), and whether you are opening a long or a short. Exchanges publish different formulas for these cases; Phemex, for example, separates its linear and inverse calculations, while Bybit documents distinct USDT and inverse rules.
- Choose the margin mode. Isolated margin uses collateral allocated to that position. Cross margin can draw on shared account collateral and be affected by other positions and unrealized profit or loss.
- Collect the inputs. Note the entry price, position size or notional, leverage or initial margin, any extra margin, maintenance-margin rate and deduction, and applicable fee assumptions. For cross margin, also account for available equity, other positions and their maintenance requirements.
- Find the current maintenance tier. Maintenance requirements can rise as position notional increases. Use the tier matching the position’s notional; if a calculated liquidation level changes the assumed notional tier, recalculate using the applicable tier.
- Use the venue’s current formula or calculator. Do not transfer a formula from another exchange or contract type. Binance provides a futures calculator; compare its result with the exchange’s order-entry estimate using the same settings.
- Check the trigger price and account state. Bybit and Binance say liquidation is triggered by mark price, which may differ from the last traded price. For cross margin, account changes can also move the displayed estimate.
What formula applies to an isolated linear USDT long?
Bybit’s Unified Trading Account rules publish the following formula for an isolated linear USDT long:
Liquidation Price (Long) = [(Entry Price × Position Size) − (Entry Price × Position Size ÷ Leverage) − (Extra Margin Added ÷ (1 − Taker Fee Rate)) − MM Deduction] ÷ [Position Size − (Position Size × MM Rate)]

Here, MM means maintenance margin. The maintenance-margin rate depends on the position’s risk-limit tier. The equation includes entry price, position size, leverage, added margin, the tier’s maintenance-margin rate and deduction, and a taker-fee term. Bybit’s short-side equation has different signs and fee treatment, so do not adapt the long formula by simply changing the direction label.
Bybit’s documented illustration uses a 1 BTC long entered at 40,000 USDT with 50× leverage, 3,000 USDT of extra margin, a 0.5% maintenance-margin rate and a 0.0550% taker fee. Under those stated assumptions, Bybit gives a liquidation price of 36,380.25 USDT. This is an example for that venue’s formula and assumptions, not a general BTC liquidation price.

How do contract type and margin mode change the calculation?
| Setup | What affects the estimate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Linear contract | Price and position value are calculated in the contract’s quote currency; long and short formulas differ. | Use the exchange’s formula for the specific linear contract, direction and maintenance tier. |
| Inverse contract | Contract quantity and value relationships are different from linear contracts. | Use the inverse formula for the contract and direction; a linear formula cannot be reused. |
| Isolated margin | The margin allocated to the position, including any extra margin, is central to the estimate. | Confirm the allocated amount and the exchange’s maintenance and fee assumptions. |
| Cross margin | Shared available balance, unrealized P&L and other positions can affect account risk and the displayed level. | Check current account state and whether the exchange labels the displayed price as a reference. |
Adding margin to an isolated position can move its estimated liquidation level farther from entry, all else equal. It does not remove maintenance requirements or guarantee that liquidation cannot occur. In cross margin, a displayed price may change as other positions, equity or unrealized P&L change. KuCoin’s Help Center article dated July 22, 2026, says cross-margin liquidation occurs when the risk rate reaches 100% and describes its displayed cross-margin liquidation price as a reference, not the basis for liquidation.
Why can the displayed price differ from the price on my chart?
The trigger may be mark price rather than last traded price. Bybit’s Help Center states: “Liquidation is triggered by the Mark Price, not the Last Traded Price (LTP).” A last-price chart therefore cannot by itself establish whether a liquidation threshold was reached. Binance also warns that sharp volatility can cause the mark price at liquidation to differ from a previously calculated threshold.

Fees and venue risk procedures can also affect the realized outcome. Bybit notes that closing fees can cause small differences from a calculated figure. Binance describes staged liquidation procedures, so an adverse move does not necessarily correspond to a single static price at which the entire position is instantly closed in the same way across venues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a liquidation estimate tell me the chance of being liquidated?
No. A liquidation price estimates a threshold under specified assumptions; it is not a probability forecast. A 2021 study of Bitcoin perpetual-futures data from BitMEX reported daily average forced-liquidation percentages of 3.51% for longs and 1.89% for shorts in its analyzed sample, and average leverage around 60× among forcibly liquidated traders. Those are historical, sample-specific findings, not current probabilities for all crypto markets or for an individual trade.

For a pre-trade decision, focus on whether the estimate still makes sense under the exchange’s current tier, fees, mark-price trigger and margin mode. A displayed number can become stale as prices or account conditions change.
