To buy XRP, use a platform that supports it in your location, fund your account, and place an order. Before paying, check the platform’s fees and whether you can withdraw XRP to a wallet you control. Keeping XRP on the platform means the provider holds the keys; moving it to a self-custody wallet gives you control but also makes you responsible for protecting the keys and recovery information.
XRP can lose value, and buying it does not give you ownership in Ripple or a claim to income. The safest process is to understand what you are buying, verify the platform and withdrawal details, and choose custody you can manage securely.
What you are buying when you buy XRP
XRP is a digital asset used on the XRP Ledger. It is not company equity or a bond-like investment that promises income. Issuer filings describe its market value as subject to supply, demand, and speculation, so its price can rise or fall and you can lose money. Buying XRP directly through a platform is different from buying an investment product through a brokerage account. With a product, your rights depend on its legal structure; do not assume you own XRP or can withdraw it unless the product documents say so.

How to buy XRP through a platform
The general process is to open an account with a provider that supports XRP where you live, add an accepted payment method or previously acquired digital asset, and place an order. SEC-hosted filing materials describe this intermediary pattern, but they do not establish current availability, payment methods, fees, or screens for any particular provider. - Check location and product: Confirm that the provider currently allows customers in your country or state to buy XRP, and determine whether it sells XRP directly or offers a different investment product.
- Review costs and rules: Read the provider’s current terms for purchase fees, spread, withdrawal costs, account requirements, and any limits or holds. These details were not verified for named providers.
- Fund the account: Use a payment method or asset the provider accepts. Confirm the deposit method, processing time, and any associated charges in its current interface.
- Place an order: Review the order type, price, and total cost before confirming. An order may execute at a different price than expected if the market moves.
- Decide where to hold the XRP: If it remains on the platform, the provider retains custody. To control the keys yourself, use the provider’s withdrawal process to send XRP to a compatible wallet, after checking its requirements.
Exchange custody or your own wallet?
A platform account and a self-custody wallet are different custody arrangements. A wallet controls an XRP Ledger account through private keys; hardware and software wallets are among the available types. - Choose a compatible wallet: Get wallet software or a device from the maker’s verified official source. Confirm current XRP support and consult its own setup and recovery instructions.
- Protect recovery credentials: Store recovery material offline in a secure place. Do not share private keys, recovery phrases, or other secrets with anyone, and do not enter them into a website or message prompted by an unsolicited request.
- Check the receiving details: Verify the destination address and any required network or destination information against the wallet and sending platform instructions. Do not rely on a copied address without checking it.
- Review withdrawal terms: Confirm the platform permits withdrawals to an external XRP Ledger wallet and check its fee, limits, processing time, and any required fields.
- Confirm before sending: Recheck the asset, network, destination, and all required details before authorizing a transfer. A mistaken transfer may not be recoverable.
SEC-hosted registration materials described an XRP Ledger account reserve of 10 XRP and transaction costs of approximately 0.00001 XRP per transaction in 2025. Price and loss risk
XRP’s value can fluctuate, and its market price is exposed to supply, demand, and speculation. There is no income claim like a bond coupon, and ownership of XRP is not ownership of Ripple. Whether XRP is suitable for a particular person depends on their circumstances; these facts do not establish personal suitability.

Custody and transfer risk
Leaving XRP with a platform means relying on that intermediary for custody and account access. Self-custody avoids that particular arrangement but makes you responsible for securing keys and recovery material and for entering transfer details correctly. Neither option removes the risk of losing access or value.
U.S. case record, not a universal legal ruling
The U.S. litigation record is more specific than saying XRP is simply “cleared” or “illegal.” In a May 8, 2025 statement, SEC Commissioner Caroline A. Crenshaw said the district court treated Ripple’s institutional XRP sales as unregistered offers and sales of investment contracts, while other secondary offers and sales were treated differently. On August 7, 2025, the SEC said the Commission and Ripple dismissed their appeals and the district court’s final judgment remained in effect, including a civil penalty of $125,035,150 and an injunction. That later disposition should not be confused with the earlier proposed settlement framework, which the SEC statement described as involving more than $75 million held in escrow and a proposed $50 million payment to the Commission. The case record does not determine the legal treatment of every XRP transaction, future regulatory action, other jurisdictions, or a platform’s decision to list XRP.
