Before you place an order
TreasuryDirect sells marketable Treasury bills, notes, bonds, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) and floating rate notes (FRNs) at auction. You must bid when Treasury auctions the type of security you want. Each offering is for a specific security, so check the current TreasuryDirect purchase information and auction schedule and FAQs before ordering. Dates and offerings can change; Cash Management Bills are not available through TreasuryDirect.
These instructions are for marketable securities, not savings bonds. Savings bonds are a separate TreasuryDirect product with a different purchase path and minimum.
How to buy at auction in TreasuryDirect
- Open an account or sign in. A TreasuryDirect account is required to buy marketable securities directly. The service holds securities electronically. TreasuryDirect says it charges no account-opening or account-management fee; that does not establish whether a bank may charge its own fees. See the TreasuryDirect account overview.
- Check the offering. Confirm the security type and auction details on TreasuryDirect’s current offering information. Do not rely on an old calendar entry as a guaranteed auction date.
- Choose Buy Direct. After signing in, select Buy Direct, choose the offered security, enter the purchase amount and complete the requested purchase information.
- Submit a noncompetitive bid. TreasuryDirect’s direct purchase channel accepts noncompetitive bids only. You agree to the auction-determined return, which is not known when you schedule the purchase. Competitive bids must be placed through a broker, dealer or another permitted channel; you cannot submit both a competitive and noncompetitive bid for the same auction. TreasuryDirect explains the process in its marketable-security purchase instructions.
- Select the funding source and check the purchase. Payment is withdrawn from your selected bank account or Certificate of Indebtedness. Make sure the funds will be available by the issue date. Review the auction price in Pending Purchases and Reinvestments, then check your account for the completed holding.
Purchase limits and holding rules
TreasuryDirect’s purchase page lists a $100 minimum for marketable securities, purchases in $100 increments, and a $10 million maximum noncompetitive bid. These are program transaction limits, not recommended investment amounts. Newly purchased marketable securities generally must remain in TreasuryDirect for at least 45 calendar days before transfer or sale. TreasuryDirect states an exception for a purchase funded with proceeds from reinvesting a maturing security. Check its current purchase and transfer rules before relying on that exception.

What you are choosing
The security type affects its term and how its return works. Offerings and auction dates vary, so use TreasuryDirect’s current schedule rather than assuming every type is available at any time.
- Bills are short-term marketable securities. Check the live offering for the available bill and its details.
- Notes have 2-, 3-, 5-, 7- or 10-year terms, with fixed interest paid every six months, according to TreasuryDirect’s Treasury notes page.
- TIPS have 5-, 10- or 30-year terms. Their principal adjusts with inflation, and interest is paid every six months based on adjusted principal. TreasuryDirect permits bids at negative real yields. See the TIPS details.
- Bonds and FRNs are also auctioned marketable securities. Check the current official offering information for the specific security’s terms.
If you may need to sell or transfer a holding before maturity, account for TreasuryDirect’s holding period and the fact that the auction rate or price is not yours to choose through a noncompetitive bid. A TreasuryDirect account is distinct from a brokerage account: securities purchased through a broker are held through the Commercial Book-Entry System, not in your TreasuryDirect account. How this differs from savings bonds
Savings bonds are not marketable securities bought through the auction steps above. TreasuryDirect’s account overview lists a $25 minimum for savings bonds and $100 for other securities. Use the separate savings-bond purchase path if that is the product you want; do not apply the auction bid process or marketable-security limits to savings bonds.
