Start with the official event, publisher, or vendor page for the exact item. Check whether it requires a preorder, a timed queue, or a specific pickup location before you travel or pay a reseller. If the item is sold out, evaluate the actual listing, seller, terms, and payment protections—not just the word “exclusive.”
Find the official route for the exact item first
There is no single buying rule for all Comic-Con merchandise. Organizers, publishers, and individual vendors set their own inventory, queue, preorder, and pickup procedures. Use the event’s official merchandise page and the maker’s announcement to verify the item and current instructions.
New York Comic Con 2026
NYCC’s official merchandise page lists apparel, lanyards, stickers, pins, plushes, bags, and other goods. It identifies official merchandise booth #4505. Merchandise preordered but not shipped before the show, or ordered through the mobile app, should be picked up at booth #4600. Check the page again before attending because event details can change.
DC’s September 30, 2026 announcement says DC Shop will offer limited-edition merchandise at NYCC while supplies last, with digital queueing for select activities. Listed products include replica rings, light-up keychains, T-shirts, hats, jackets, and hoodies. DC also announced limited printings of special-edition foil-cover comics and exclusive hardcovers. These are physical convention-related products, but the announcement does not establish that a particular edition is available through Amazon or any other retailer.

San Diego Comic-Con 2026
For its SDCC 2026 exclusives, TAMASHII NATIONS says preorder pickup is the only guaranteed way to secure event items during the convention. Walk-up purchases are available only while supplies last; quantities may vary by day and access is not guaranteed. The vendor also announced limited-edition post-event availability through TAMASHII NATIONS ONLINE SHOP and TAMASHII NATIONS STORE NEW YORK. Those terms apply to this vendor’s offering, not every booth or convention item.
Compare official, walk-up, post-event, and resale options

Use this comparison to decide whether the time savings or convenience of resale is worth its added cost and uncertainty. If an official page does not announce a restock, do not assume one will happen.

Check a resale listing before paying
- Match the exact edition. Compare the name, artwork or cover, edition identifiers, quantity information if published, condition, and included components with the official announcement or vendor listing. A generic “exclusive” description does not identify a specific edition.
- Request photos of the actual item. Ask for clear, current pictures of the item and relevant packaging, edition marks, and condition. The FTC warns that stock photos do not establish that a seller has the item or show its condition. Photos help you assess a listing; they do not guarantee authenticity.
- Review the seller’s history. Read recent feedback and comments rather than relying only on a star score. Search the seller or site name with words such as “complaint” or “scam.” The FTC recommends checking a seller’s track record and searching for complaints.
- Calculate the full price and read the terms. Add shipping, taxes, and fees. Check the delivery estimate, return eligibility, and who pays return shipping. Ask unresolved questions in writing and keep the replies.
- Keep the deal on the marketplace. An off-platform payment or conversation can reduce the protections available through the marketplace. Before paying, confirm that the platform’s dispute process covers this transaction and that your payment method’s buyer protection applies to this seller and item.
- Save records and note deadlines. Keep the listing, item photos, seller messages, payment confirmation, shipping promise, and receipts. Check the marketplace’s deadlines for returns and claims. If a problem arises, contact the seller and platform promptly and dispute the charge with your card issuer where appropriate.
Recognize warning signs without treating one as proof
- An unusually low price for branded merchandise: the FTC identifies prices that are far below others’ prices as a potential warning sign. It is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that an item is fake.
- Pressure to leave the platform or use hard-to-reverse payment: be wary if a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or another payment route that makes it difficult to recover money.
- No item-specific evidence or unclear terms: reluctance to show the actual item, explain what is included, or state shipping and return conditions makes the listing harder to evaluate.
- HTTPS presented as proof: HTTPS encrypts a connection; it does not prove that a seller or website is legitimate. Scammers can use encrypted sites too.
- Marketplace seller disclosures treated as an authenticity certificate: the INFORM Consumers Act’s disclosure provisions cover many high-volume third-party sellers of new or unused consumer products, not every seller. Marketplaces must also provide a way to report suspicious activity, but disclosure does not certify an item as genuine.
The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam in 2022. That is an agency-level statistic, not a rate for Comic-Con merchandise buyers or a measure of risk in 2026. See the FTC’s 2023 summary.

Comic-Con’s Convention Policies state: “Retail sales are strictly limited to the exhibitors in the Comic-Con Exhibit Hall.” That is a venue retail policy. Separately, Comic-Con’s terms and conditions prohibit selling, trading, transferring, or sharing a Comic-Con badge, purchase code, or complimentary pass. Those credential restrictions do not establish a universal ban on reselling merchandise.
