You can buy gold as physical bullion, through an exchange-traded product, by purchasing mining-company shares, or with futures contracts. These routes do not give you the same thing: a coin or bar is metal you can possess, while a fund share, stock, or futures contract provides a different kind of exposure with its own costs and risks. For US investors, compare what you actually own, the full cost to enter and exit, and how easily you can sell before choosing a route.

Compare the main ways to buy gold

Route What you own or control Costs and risks to check
Physical bullion coins or bars Gold in your possession, or held for you by a storage provider Premium over spot, resale spread, delivery, storage, insurance, authentication, and liquidity
Gold ETF or other exchange-traded product Shares or notes in a product whose strategy may use physical metal, futures, or other exposure Fund expenses, brokerage and trading costs, strategy and holdings, and market price relative to NAV
Mining-company shares Ownership in a company involved in mining, not direct ownership of gold Company operations and broader market factors, in addition to changes in gold prices
Gold futures A contractual position tied to gold prices, subject to the contract’s terms Leverage, margin exposure, contract terms, and the possibility of losses beyond the amount initially invested

These categories are not interchangeable. A product’s name or its connection to gold does not by itself establish that you can redeem it for metal. Read its offering documents to find out how it provides exposure.

Buying physical gold coins or bars

Bullion coins and bars have a stated weight and investment-grade purity. Their purchase price typically includes a dealer premium over the spot price—the current reference price for the metal. The dealer’s buyback price may be below spot, so the difference between what you pay and what you could receive when selling is part of the cost of owning physical gold. CFTC and FINRA’s investor bulletin puts it this way: “A dealer will always sell metal above the spot price and buy it back below the spot price.” Treat that as general investor guidance, not a guarantee about every transaction.

Compare the full transaction, not just the advertised price

Before placing an order, ask for the total price and the seller’s terms. Compare products of similar weight and purity, and ask how the dealer determines its buyback price. Find out whether shipping, payment, authentication, or other charges apply. For a transaction involving delivery, clarify who is responsible for arranging it and what happens if an order is delayed or disputed.

  • Authentication and terms: How can the item’s weight and purity be verified, and what are the payment, delivery, return, and resale conditions?
  • Seller compensation: Ask how the seller makes money and whether commissions or other charges are involved.

Coins, bars, and collectible premiums

Choose bullion by its metal content and transaction terms rather than assuming a coin’s design or story will make it easier to sell for more. Collectible or numismatic coins can carry premiums that may not be recoverable on resale, and they may be less liquid than bullion. The CFTC and FINRA bulletin says “semi-numismatic” has no special meaning. Be cautious when a seller uses claims about future collector value to justify a high markup.

Buying gold through ETFs and other exchange-traded products

Exchange-traded products can offer exposure through a brokerage account without requiring you to take delivery of a coin or bar. Their structures vary: some hold physical bullion, while others use futures or other derivatives. The CFTC also describes precious-metals securities as including mining shares as well as exchange-traded products that buy physical metal or trade futures. Check the particular product’s documents rather than inferring its holdings from its name.

For ETFs covered by its investor bulletin, the SEC explains that retail investors buy and sell shares on exchanges at market prices. An ETF’s market price can be above or below its net asset value (NAV), the per-share value of its underlying assets less liabilities. The SEC bulletin applies to ETFs registered as open-end investment companies or unit investment trusts under the Investment Company Act of 1940; it does not cover every commodity exchange-traded product or exchange-traded note.

What to check before buying an exchange-traded product

  1. Identify the legal structure and strategy. Read the prospectus or other official offering document. Determine whether the product holds bullion, uses futures or other derivatives, or follows another approach.
  2. Review holdings and expenses. Check what the product holds and how its expenses are charged. Ongoing expenses reduce returns over time; brokerage and trading costs may also apply.
  3. Check trading information. Review historical premiums or discounts to NAV where available, and consider the possibility that the market price at which you trade differs from NAV.
  4. Understand how you can sell. Exchange-listed shares and notes are commonly traded through brokerage accounts, but trading access, costs, and market prices vary by product.

Investor.gov notes that investors often use brokerage accounts to trade exchange-listed ETF shares and that costs and market prices vary by fund. A listed product is not necessarily a claim on a specific coin or bar, so do not assume you can redeem ordinary shares for physical gold.

Mining shares and gold futures are different exposures

Mining-company shares

A mining share represents ownership in a business, not possession of the gold it produces. Its performance can reflect company-specific and broader market factors as well as gold prices. It is therefore not a direct substitute for bullion or for a product that holds metal.

Futures contracts

Futures provide contractual exposure to prices under specified contract terms. They can be leveraged, meaning a relatively small margin deposit can control a larger position. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and futures positions can expose an investor to losses beyond the amount initially invested. Understand the contract, margin requirements, and how the position is managed before trading.

Be cautious with gold IRA sales pitches

A “gold IRA” pitch may involve a self-directed individual retirement account and a separate arrangement for buying and holding metals. CFTC and FINRA warn investors to scrutinize high fees and commissions, inflated collectible-coin prices, and claims that metals are safe. Do not treat a retirement-account label as proof that a product is low-cost, suitable, or protected from loss.

Before agreeing to a transaction, get clear answers to these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Who will hold the assets, and what custody or storage arrangements apply?
  • What are the setup, ongoing, transaction, and exit costs?
  • How does the seller or salesperson earn money, including through commissions?
  • Is the salesperson registered when registration is applicable?
  • What are the buyback or other exit terms, and how will the resale price be determined?

Choose a route by matching it to the exposure you want

Start by deciding whether you want possession of metal or a financial position whose value is linked to gold. Then compare the specific costs and terms of the available products.

  • If you want metal in your possession: Compare bullion items by weight, purity, total purchase price, delivery terms, and the likely resale spread. Include storage and insurance if you will not keep it yourself.
  • If you want exchange-traded access: Identify the product’s legal structure and exposure method, then review its prospectus, holdings, fees, trading costs, and price relative to NAV.
  • If you are considering mining shares: Assess the company as a business, recognizing that its performance is not determined by gold prices alone.
  • If you are considering futures: Make sure you understand leverage, margin, contract terms, and the potential scale of losses before taking a position.
  • If the purchase is tied to an IRA: Get a complete written breakdown of custody, setup, ongoing, and exit costs, and examine any claims about safety or collectible value carefully.
