To buy ETH safely, first choose who will hold its private keys: an exchange, which manages custody and account recovery, or a self-custody wallet, where you control access and must protect the recovery phrase. Then use a purchase service legitimately available in your jurisdiction, check its custody and fee terms, and verify every wallet address before transferring ETH. Neither option removes risk; the trade-off is between relying on a provider and taking responsibility for your own keys.

What you are buying—and what a wallet does

ETH is Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency. Buying ETH and deciding how to store it are separate decisions: you may buy through a service and keep it in that service’s custody, or withdraw it to a wallet whose keys you control. A wallet is a tool for interacting with an account on Ethereum; the private key, often backed up by a recovery phrase, is what authorizes access. It does not store coins in the same way a physical wallet stores cash. Ethereum.org’s wallet guide explains the distinction.

Exchange custody or self-custody?

The central question is who controls the keys and who can restore access. An exchange account is managed by a platform that holds crypto on your behalf. A self-custody wallet puts key control with you. Either choice can be appropriate for different needs, but each concentrates different responsibilities and risks.

Consideration Exchange custody Self-custody
Who controls the keys? The platform holds the crypto in custody; you use its account controls. You control the private key, commonly backed up by a recovery phrase.
How access is restored You rely on the provider’s account recovery process. There is no Ethereum-wide reset desk. Losing the recovery phrase or key can mean losing access.
Main responsibility Protect your login and follow the provider’s security and recovery procedures. Protect the recovery phrase, devices, and signing activity; anyone who obtains the phrase may take the assets.
Key exposure Provider, platform, or custody failure can put funds at risk; Ethereum.org warns that customer funds are at risk if an exchange has financial trouble. Your own mistakes, lost backups, compromised devices, or deceptive transactions can put funds at risk.
Costs to check Review the provider’s asset, transaction, withdrawal, and other account fees. Review wallet-related, network transaction, and transfer costs that apply to your setup.
Direct on-chain access Access and withdrawal options depend on the provider. You can interact with your account directly through a compatible wallet.

Investor.gov’s crypto asset custody bulletin advises investors to ask about fees, including asset-based, transaction, transfer, setup, and closure charges. Exact costs and available features vary by provider and jurisdiction, so check current terms rather than relying on a general fee estimate. Some people use both arrangements, but there is no universal allocation that suits every buyer.

How to buy ETH and choose where to keep it

  1. Confirm local availability. Find a purchase service legitimately available where you live. Access, identity checks, payment options, and protections differ by provider and jurisdiction; verify them directly before opening an account.
  2. Review custody and recovery terms. Determine whether the service holds ETH for you or lets you withdraw it, what account recovery involves, and what happens if the provider experiences financial trouble.
  3. Check all relevant fees. Look for costs tied to buying, selling, holding, withdrawing, transferring, and closing an account. Confirm any minimums and transfer-network options in the provider’s current terms.
  4. Secure the account before funding it. Use a unique password and enable two-factor authentication where offered. Reach the service through its verified official domain or a bookmark, not a link in an unsolicited message.
  5. Buy ETH, then make a custody decision. You can leave it in the exchange account or withdraw it to a self-custody wallet. If withdrawing, first verify that the wallet and provider support the same network and that the address is correct.
  6. Verify the destination before confirming. Check the full address character by character. If you are unfamiliar with the process, consider sending a small test transfer first, while accounting for any fees or minimums; a test does not make a later transfer reversible.

There is no single exchange that can be recommended for every reader on the available evidence. Do not assume a crypto account is insured like a bank deposit, that a platform is risk-free, or that a particular service is available in your region without checking its current terms.

If you choose self-custody

Protect the recovery phrase

Treat the recovery phrase as the master key to the wallet. Write it down or otherwise store it using a secure offline method, and keep it private. Never share it or type it into a website, including a page claiming to provide support or restore a wallet. Ethereum.org’s guidance is explicit: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” (ethereum.org security guidance). A legitimate support contact does not need your phrase.

Consider a hardware wallet carefully

A hardware wallet keeps private keys offline, which can reduce exposure to some online attacks; it does not prevent every loss, deceptive approval, or supply-chain risk. Ethereum.org names Ledger and Trezor as examples, not endorsements. Before choosing a device, check its supported networks and assets, security model, recovery process, usability, available security reviews or audit information, official support, and seller authenticity. Buy through a source you can verify and confirm current compatibility. Ethereum.org’s wallet directory says its entries are reviewed against criteria including security review, maintenance, Ethereum focus, and support for Ethereum Mainnet transactions; it is informational, not an endorsement, and reports an update dated July 8, 2026.

Common risks and how to reduce them

  • Phishing and fake apps or websites: Check the exact domain, use bookmarks for verified services, and do not enter your recovery phrase into a website. Fake wallet apps and lookalike pages can imitate legitimate services.
  • Fake support and recovery scams: Ethereum has no company-wide support desk. Ignore unsolicited direct messages and anyone promising to recover lost funds for an upfront fee. Contact an exchange or wallet provider only through its designated channels.
  • Giveaways and “send ETH to get more back” claims: Treat promises of free or multiplied ETH as scams. Urgency, celebrity imagery, or a convincing-looking account does not make an offer legitimate.
  • Mistaken transfers: Verify the destination address and network before confirming. In the ordinary case, a confirmed blockchain transfer is final; ethereum.org warns, “No one can reverse blockchain transactions.” (ethereum.org scam help and reporting guidance)
  • Malicious token approvals: When a smart contract requests permission to spend tokens, avoid an unlimited allowance when a smaller limit will do. Review what you are approving before signing.
  • Exchange and custody costs: Compare asset-based, transaction, transfer, setup, and closure fees in the provider’s current terms. A low purchase fee alone does not show the total cost.

What to do if you suspect a wallet compromise

  1. Use a new, secure wallet for remaining assets. If you believe a wallet is compromised, move remaining funds to a new wallet with a recovery phrase that has not been exposed. Do not reuse the compromised phrase.
  2. Revoke token approvals. Review and revoke smart-contract approvals associated with the affected wallet where possible. Use a trusted wallet or provider interface and verify the site before connecting.
  3. Secure linked accounts. Change passwords on linked exchange accounts and enable two-factor authentication.
  4. Preserve evidence. Keep transaction hashes, addresses, and relevant communications for reporting to the appropriate wallet or exchange provider and authorities.
  5. Reject paid recovery promises. A service claiming it can reverse a confirmed blockchain transfer is likely another scam. Contact the relevant provider through its official channels instead.

Ethereum.org’s incident guidance describes these response steps and stresses that confirmed transactions are final. Acting quickly may help secure assets that remain under your control, but it cannot guarantee recovery of ETH already transferred.
