The purchase has no separately listed transaction fee when routed through market makers, but Robinhood says it receives compensation included in the spread. Exchange-routed orders instead show an explicit fee that varies by your eligible trading volume and, where applicable, maker/taker execution.
How to buy Bitcoin on Robinhood
Robinhood’s US app and classic web experience offer a Bitcoin buy flow using market-maker routing. Bitcoin is also listed for in-app and Robinhood Legend fee-tier trading; availability and features can vary by platform and location, so use the live order screen to confirm what your account can access. See Robinhood’s crypto availability information.
- In the app or on Robinhood web classic, select Crypto.
- Search for and select Bitcoin.
- Select Buy and enter the dollar amount you want to purchase.
- Open Actions to confirm the order type, such as a market order or recurring investment.
- Select Review. Check the order’s estimate, current bid and ask, order type, routing, and any displayed fee.
- In the app, swipe up to submit. On web classic, select Submit buy.
Robinhood supports fractional crypto orders. Its published minimums are $0.01 for market-maker-routed orders and $0.03 for exchange-routed orders; your order screen is the place to verify the minimum for the route you are using. Crypto trading is available 24/7 except during scheduled maintenance. Details are in Robinhood’s buying and selling crypto help page.
Why the displayed Bitcoin price may differ from the chart
A chart may show Bitcoin’s mid price, the midpoint between the current bid and ask. A buy generally executes at the ask, while a sell generally executes at the bid. Robinhood states: “Orders are filled at the bid or ask price, not at the mid price.” The chart’s mid price is therefore not a guaranteed execution price. Robinhood says the review screen shows current bid and ask prices; check those alongside the estimated order total before submitting. See Robinhood’s crypto order routing explanation.

What Robinhood’s crypto fees mean
Robinhood describes two routing approaches: market-maker routing, the default for standard crypto orders in the app and web classic, and exchange routing, which sends supported crypto orders to one or more partner exchanges. Their costs are presented differently, so compare the order review details rather than treating a “no fee” label as proof that the trade has no cost.
| Route | How the cost is shown | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Market-maker routing | No separately listed transaction fee in Robinhood’s comparison; Robinhood says compensation from market makers is included in the spread. | Review the displayed bid, ask, and order estimate. The spread varies; Robinhood’s disclosed receipt is not a guaranteed customer charge or a universal spread. |
| Exchange routing | Robinhood states fee tiers from 0.00% to 0.95%, based on eligible trailing 30-day exchange-routing volume. Where maker/taker pricing applies, the order’s handling also matters. | Check the fee and tier shown for your account and order, plus whether the order is maker or taker and whether Bitcoin is eligible for this route on your platform. |
Market-maker routing: no separate line-item fee, but a spread cost
With this route, Robinhood sends the order to third-party liquidity providers. Robinhood says it receives part of the executed order’s dollar value from market makers, and that amount is included in the spread. As of June 15, 2026, Robinhood disclosed that it receives $0.95 for every $100 of notional crypto volume routed through market makers. That is Robinhood Crypto’s stated receipt from its market maker—not the total spread on every order, an independently measured figure, or a fixed amount charged to each customer. Robinhood’s example associates a $100 order and a 0.96% spread with a $0.95 receipt. See the company’s routing disclosure.

Exchange routing: explicit tiers and possible maker/taker pricing
Robinhood’s US crypto fee-tiers page states exchange-routing fees ranging from 0.00% to 0.95%, determined by eligible exchange-routing volume over the trailing 30 days. Robinhood says market and stop orders are taker orders. A limit or stop-limit order may be maker if it is not immediately matched, or taker if it executes immediately. The maker/taker pricing rollout may not yet apply to every customer, so rely on the fee disclosure shown in your own account rather than assuming a particular schedule. See Robinhood’s crypto fee tiers.
How to compare the cost of a specific order
- Look at the actual buy estimate and current bid/ask on the review screen, not just the chart price.
- Read the explicit fee and tier shown for your order if using exchange routing.
- Factor in the order type: a market or stop order is taker; a limit or stop-limit order’s maker/taker handling depends on how it executes, where that pricing applies.
- Confirm that the desired Bitcoin order can use the route you intend on your platform.
Robinhood cautions that all-in costs can be higher or lower with either routing method and that neither route guarantees better execution. Costs depend on the order, routing, applicable tier, and current pricing.

How market and limit orders affect execution
A market order prioritizes execution at an available price, but it does not promise a particular price. Robinhood says its market buy price is buffered by up to 1% and market sell price by up to 5%; if the price moves outside the relevant buffer, the order does not execute, and an unexecuted market order may be automatically canceled after two minutes. A limit order lets you set a maximum buy price or a minimum sell price under the platform’s order rules. These controls do not eliminate market or execution risk. Robinhood’s crypto order guidance describes these rules.
