A console without a disc drive cannot read a physical game disc by itself. Your options are to add a manufacturer-supported drive (on certain PS5 models), use a disc-capable console, or buy the game digitally. Nintendo physical games use game cards rather than discs, so they require a compatible console with a card slot.
First, identify the console and the kind of physical game
Before buying an accessory or game, check the exact console model and the media format. A USB computer optical drive is not a substitute for a console game drive: only use an add-on the console maker documents as compatible.
- Disc games: PlayStation and Xbox game discs require a compatible optical drive or an explicitly supported alternative.
- Nintendo game cards: Physical Switch and Switch 2 games are cards, not discs. They need a compatible console with a game-card slot.
- Digital games: These are downloaded from the platform’s store or redeemed with a download code; a download card is not a playable game card.
Can you add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition?
Yes, but only for specific models. Sony’s US product listing says its separately sold Disc Drive works with PS5 Pro and PS5 Digital Edition slim model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. It requires an internet connection for initial pairing. Check the model number on your console and Sony’s current listing for your region before buying; compatibility should not be assumed for other PS5 Digital Edition model groups. On supported models, the add-on plays PS5 game discs and supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray. Sony also lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD movie playback. Can you play disc games on Xbox Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is designed for disc-free gaming and cannot read a game disc. Xbox Series X is available with a UHD Blu-ray disc player. Xbox’s disc-to-digital license option
Xbox documents a separate option that can grant a digital license for some eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game discs. To claim it, sign in on a supported Xbox One or Series X console with an optical drive, insert the eligible disc, and follow the on-screen prompt. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not supported by this feature.

This does not let a Series S read a disc: the initial claim requires an optical-drive Xbox. Eligibility can vary or change, and Xbox’s terms describe one revocable license per game disc, with availability in select markets. The license remains linked to the disc. How physical Nintendo games work on Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo physical games use game cards. Insert the card into a compatible Switch or Switch 2; there is no disc drive to add. Confirm the particular game and console are compatible before purchasing.

Nintendo digital games and downloadable content are associated with the purchasing Nintendo Account and can be used across consoles under Nintendo’s virtual game card or online-license rules. If storage—not the game format—is the problem
A memory card can expand storage for downloads, but it cannot add a disc reader or game-card slot. Nintendo says Switch 2 accepts only microSD Express cards, while Switch uses compatible microSD cards. Check the console-specific storage guidance before buying a card. What Sony’s announced 2028 disc change means
On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that production of physical discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end starting January 2028. Sony said the policy does not affect games released or scheduled for release on disc before that date.
