Reliable browser automation depends less on longer timeouts than on making each step wait for the right condition, locating controls in ways that survive ordinary UI changes, and giving each test independent state. Use condition-based waits instead of guessed sleeps, assert the result a user should see, and investigate failures with locator and actionability evidence before adding workarounds.

Why browser automation flakes

A page can finish its initial document load while JavaScript is still rendering a control, a network response is still pending, or an overlay is still changing the layout. If automation issues its next command before the application is ready for that specific action, the result is a race condition. Selenium’s official Waiting Strategies guide calls this “one of the primary causes of flaky tests.”

Other common sources are locators coupled to incidental markup, tests that share cookies or data, assertions that check too early, and environment differences between local and CI runs. Treat a flaky failure as evidence of an assumption that did not hold—not as a reason to add a larger timeout by default.

Choose synchronization that matches the next action

Prefer conditions over fixed sleeps

A fixed sleep pauses for a duration whether the page is ready immediately or remains unready when the pause ends. It therefore wastes time in the first case and still races in the second. Wait for the condition the next step needs: a button to become visible and enabled, a result row to appear, or a known navigation to finish.

With Playwright, locator actions automatically wait for the relevant actionability checks, and web-first assertions retry while checking the expected state. See the official auto-waiting documentation. For Selenium, use an explicit wait tied to a condition rather than issuing a command immediately after navigation or a guessed pause; its wait guide describes the available strategies.

Playwright example: wait, act, and assert

This Python example assumes the application has a button with the accessible name “Save” and displays “Saved” after a successful save. Install Playwright and its browser with pip install playwright followed by playwright install. Save as test_save.py and run with python test_save.py.

import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright, expect

async def main():
    async with async_playwright() as p:
        browser = await p.chromium.launch(headless=True)
        page = await browser.new_page()
        await page.goto("https://example.com")

        save_button = page.get_by_role("button", name="Save")
        await save_button.click()
        await expect(page.get_by_text("Saved", exact=True)).to_be_visible()

        await browser.close()

asyncio.run(main())

Replace the example URL and expected text with those of your application. The key behavior is that the click waits for its actionability requirements and the assertion retries for the visible outcome; a one-time visibility read would not provide the same waiting behavior.

Selenium example: explicit condition wait

For a Python Selenium test, install the package with pip install selenium. This example waits up to ten seconds for a uniquely identified button to be clickable, clicks it, then waits for a confirmation element to become visible.

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait

 driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
    save_button = wait.until(
        EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.ID, "save"))
    )
    save_button.click()
    wait.until(
        EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "save-confirmation"))
    )
finally:
    driver.quit()

Remove the leading space before driver = webdriver.Chrome() if copying this snippet: it must be at the left margin in a Python file. Replace both IDs with stable identifiers from the actual page. The ten-second value is a maximum wait for these conditions, not a recommendation to sleep for ten seconds on every run. Selenium’s wait guidance also warns against mixing implicit and explicit waits, which can produce unpredictable wait durations.

Choose locators that communicate intent

A locator is both a way to find an element and a maintenance contract. Prefer an identifier that is unique, readable, and likely to remain meaningful as the page evolves.

Playwright: locate what users recognize

Playwright recommends locators based on accessible roles, labels, text, and placeholders, or deliberate test IDs where the application defines a test contract. For example, get_by_role("button", name="Save") describes a control in user-facing terms. If two buttons have the same name, refine the locator using a meaningful relationship or add a stable test ID rather than selecting the first match arbitrarily. Playwright’s locator guide explains its locator options and cautions against long CSS or XPath chains tied to DOM structure.

Selenium: use unique, compact selectors

Selenium’s locator advice gives particular weight to a unique, predictable HTML ID when one exists. Otherwise, choose a compact readable selector that identifies the intended element without traversing a long chain of ancestors. See Selenium’s locator tips. The best locator rule is framework-dependent: don’t force a role-based strategy where the framework or application does not support it well, and don’t mistake a test ID for a user-facing accessibility label.

Keep each test independent

A test that depends on cookies, local storage, a prior test’s account changes, or a shared record can pass in isolation and fail in a suite. Give each test the state and data it requires, and clean up or use isolated fixtures so one test’s outcome does not determine another’s. Playwright’s best practices recommend isolating storage, cookies, and data to make tests reproducible and avoid cascading failures.

  • Create or select test data that is unique to the test where practical.
  • Start each test with the intended authentication and browser state rather than relying on execution order.
  • Use setup and cleanup hooks for repeated preparation, but keep each test logically understandable and independently runnable.
  • When a test fails only in a suite, check for shared state and order dependence before changing waits.

Assert the outcome, not merely the command

A successful click call proves that the automation issued a click under the framework’s rules; it does not prove the application completed the user’s task. Assert the observable result that matters: a confirmation message, an updated value, a changed route, or a result row. For asynchronous UI, use an assertion that waits and retries for the expected condition. Playwright documents this web-first approach in its best practices and auto-waiting guide.

Keep the assertion specific enough to catch the wrong result. A generic “page has text” check can pass because the same text appears in a hidden template or unrelated region. Scope it to the relevant region or use a precise role, label, or test contract.

Debug failures before masking them

When an action fails or behaves inconsistently, establish which assumption failed. Check whether the locator matches zero, one, or multiple elements; whether the target is visible, enabled, stable, and able to receive events; and whether an overlay or navigation changed the page between steps.

Playwright documents live locator inspection through its VS Code extension and Inspector, including matching elements and actionability logs. Its best-practice guidance and actionability documentation are useful references when diagnosing such failures. Read the failure details and logs, then correct the locator, synchronization condition, or test state that was wrong. A force-click or arbitrary sleep can hide the symptom while leaving the underlying assumption broken.

Choose a framework and execution environment by fit

Selenium and Playwright are both documented browser automation options, but no universal winner follows from these practices. Compare what your team needs rather than choosing on a claim that a framework eliminates flakiness.

  • Language and ecosystem: Favor a language the team can maintain and the libraries and CI setup already support.
  • Browsers and devices: Match the required browser and device coverage to the project’s users and release risk.
  • Synchronization and assertions: Understand the framework’s waits, actionability behavior, and assertion model, and make sure the team uses them consistently.
  • Locator ergonomics and debugging: Consider how the framework expresses intent and how easily engineers can inspect failed matches and actions.
  • Execution infrastructure: Local runs may be sufficient for a narrower matrix; hosted execution can help teams that need broader browser or device coverage.

BrowserStack’s official materials describe Selenium and Playwright automation support and browser/device testing. It is one possible hosted option, not a requirement or an established best choice for every team; see its product information and support page for current details.

Common troubleshooting cases

  • Element not found: The page may not yet have rendered it, the locator may target a different label or identifier, or the element may live in a frame or another context. Inspect the rendered page and locator matches, then wait for a relevant condition or correct the locator.
  • Click intercepted or target not actionable: A loading layer, animation, or another element may cover the control. Check visibility, stability, enabled state, and event reception; wait for the actual blocking condition to clear rather than forcing the click by default.
  • Assertion fails intermittently: The assertion may read once before an asynchronous update, or may check text that is too broad or too narrow. Use a retrying assertion for the intended user-visible result and scope it to the relevant UI.
  • Passes locally, fails in CI: Compare browser versions, viewport, data, authentication, and timing assumptions. Make state explicit and wait for readiness conditions instead of compensating blindly with longer pauses.
  • Only fails after another test: Look for reused cookies, storage, accounts, or records, and remove dependence on test ordering through isolated state and data.
  • Timeout after increasing the limit: A longer limit cannot fix a selector that never matches, an incorrect expected state, or a permanently blocked action. Inspect the failure evidence and validate the target condition first.

Performance and reliability trade-offs

Condition-based waits typically let a test continue as soon as the required condition is true, while fixed sleeps always consume their full duration. But waiting on the wrong condition can still waste time or produce a misleading pass. Prefer the narrowest meaningful condition for the next action, and make timeouts long enough for realistic environment variation without treating them as a substitute for diagnosis.

Isolation improves reproducibility but may require test data setup and cleanup. Wider browser/device coverage can expose compatibility issues, while also requiring more execution infrastructure and maintenance. Start with the browsers, devices, and workflows that matter to the application; expand the matrix when product risk or user needs justify it. The cited framework and vendor guidance does not establish a universal runtime, cost, or reliability figure for a particular project.

FAQ

Should I use Selenium or Playwright?

Choose based on language and team fit, required browser coverage, synchronization and locator behavior, debugging workflow, and infrastructure. The guidance here does not establish one as best for every project.

Is a test ID always better than an accessible role?

No. A role or label can make a test express the control as users perceive it; a test ID can define a stable application-test contract when that is the better fit. Choose intentionally rather than applying one locator style everywhere.

Should every browser test run on hosted infrastructure?

No. Hosted testing is an option when broader browser or device coverage is useful; whether it is worth adopting depends on your requirements and existing CI setup.

If the task is to capture a page image or PDF rather than automate an interactive workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for general browser testing. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. Before capture, it can accept cookie/consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan, and yearly billing gives two months free. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.
