Schedule focused requests, save dated results for consistent comparisons, and label API reports as top-row data rather than a complete inventory. For larger programs that need more detail, use Search Console’s daily BigQuery export.
Decide what the report needs to tell you
Start with decisions, not every possible dimension. A useful report should help you answer questions such as:
- Which destination markets are gaining or losing Google Search clicks?
- Which locale-specific landing pages receive impressions but relatively few clicks?
- Does device mix differ enough by market to affect content or technical priorities?
Search Analytics can group rows by country, page, query, device, and date. Use country for market-level performance and add page to identify landing URLs. Add query or device only for a focused diagnostic question; combining high-cardinality dimensions can make requests more expensive and results harder to interpret. Google describes this as querying your Google Search traffic data: Search Analytics: query.
For a first dashboard, a country-plus-page view is usually a practical core. Track clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position across matching date windows. These metrics describe observed Google Search performance; they do not identify the cause of a change.

Choose the property and authorize the API
Call the Search Analytics query method for the Search Console property that represents the reporting boundary you need. The API accepts Search Console authorization scopes, including the read-only webmasters.readonly scope. Confirm that the selected property covers the URLs you intend to analyze; do not assume each language or regional URL set corresponds neatly to a separate property.
Keep credentials restricted to the required access, and make the property and date range explicit in each request. Google’s API reference documents the method, request fields, and authorization options at Search Analytics: query.
Request focused date windows and dimensions
Each request needs an explicit start date and end date, with a range of at least one day. For a market report, group by country; add page when you need to inspect landing URLs. Use query or device dimensions in separate, purpose-built views when those details inform a decision.

A recurring implementation can run daily or weekly, retrieve the new or changed reporting window, and persist dated outputs for comparisons. This is an implementation pattern rather than a built-in Google scheduling feature. Consistent windows make period-over-period comparisons easier, while retaining prior results avoids repeatedly requesting the same data. Google’s quota guidance advises against unnecessary repeated queries: Usage Limits.
If date is included as a grouping dimension, days with no data are omitted from the results. A missing date row therefore does not, by itself, mean that the reporting job failed.
Design for row limits and quotas
Understand what an API result represents
Search Analytics sorts results by clicks and returns top rows subject to Search Console’s internal limits. Google states: “The API is bounded by internal limitations of Search Console and does not guarantee to return all data rows but rather top ones.” Treat query-level reports as top-results datasets, not complete query inventories.

The maximum rowLimit is 25,000 rows per query request. You can use startRow to paginate, but pagination does not remove the internal top-row limitation or guarantee that every row will be returned. State this coverage constraint wherever readers could mistake an API query table for a full accounting. Details are in Google’s Search Analytics API reference.
Control request load
Google’s Usage Limits page, last updated August 28, 2025, lists a rate limit of 1,200 Search Analytics queries per minute per site and 1,200 per minute per user. These are quota limits, not a recommended polling rate. Query load also matters: grouping or filtering by page or query costs more, page-plus-query is especially expensive, and longer date ranges increase load.
- Request only dimensions that answer a defined reporting question.
- Use moderate date windows and a sensible update cadence.
- Store results and avoid rerunning identical windows without a reason.
- Monitor quota errors and reduce request volume or complexity when they occur.

Choose between the API and BigQuery export

Google’s bulk export sends Search Console performance data to BigQuery daily. To set it up, enable the BigQuery API, grant the Search Console service account the required permission, and configure the destination in Search Console. A property owner must set up the export. Google’s announcement explains the export and its coverage: Bulk data export: a new and powerful way to access your Search Console data.
For reporting that combines search performance with site analytics, Google recommends exporting Search Console and Google Analytics data to BigQuery and merging them there. See Using Search Console and Google Analytics Data for SEO. BigQuery is an optional scale-up path, not a requirement for every international report.

Search Console’s country dimension describes Google Search traffic by country. It can show where clicks or impressions are coming from, but it does not diagnose whether hreflang is correct or establish why performance changed.

First distinguish site goals: a multilingual site offers content in multiple languages; a multi-regional site explicitly targets different countries or regions; some sites are both. Google recommends distinct URLs for language versions, with hreflang annotations or sitemaps to help Search understand locale variants. Read Managing Multi-Regional and Multilingual Sites.
Check the locale signals separately
Google supports hreflang in HTML, HTTP headers, or XML sitemaps. Locale versions should reference themselves and their alternates. The x-default value can identify a fallback for users whose language does not match a listed version; language and optional region values should use supported codes. Implementation details are in Tell Google about localized versions of your page.
Do not rely on IP-based adaptation as the only way to expose localized content. Google warns that locale-adaptive pages may not all be crawled, indexed, or ranked, and recommends explicit locale URL configurations with alternate/hreflang annotations. See How Google Crawls Locale-Adaptive Pages.
Use country and landing-page patterns to identify outcomes that deserve investigation, then validate URLs, hreflang, and crawlability independently. A country-level traffic shift can be consistent with multiple causes; the traffic report alone cannot prove that a hreflang or URL change caused it.

- Define the questions: choose target markets, locale landing pages, and any device or query diagnostics that will inform an action.
- Select the property and access: use the Search Console property that covers the reporting boundary and authorize the API with the least access needed.
- Set the reporting window: specify start and end dates; keep current and comparison windows consistent.
- Request only needed groupings: start with country and page, then add query or device only for specific views.
- Persist dated results: retain outputs so the report can compare periods without repeatedly re-querying unchanged windows.
- Label coverage: explain top-row limits for API results, particularly query tables, and distinguish missing date rows from pipeline failures.
- Scale when needed: move to daily BigQuery export if the API’s row coverage or operational needs no longer suit the reporting program.
- Investigate implementation separately: check locale URLs and hreflang rather than treating country performance as proof of correct or incorrect setup.
