The reliable way to choose an EU-compatible smart-home setup is to start with the devices and automations you need, then select a controller and the radios or bridges those exact models require. Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave are different parts of the system: a Matter logo does not guarantee every feature will work with every hub, Thread is a network transport rather than a device standard, and imported Z-Wave hardware may be the wrong regional variant. Before buying, verify each model’s certification, required controller, exposed functions, electrical rating, plug format, local-network needs, security-update policy and destination-country availability.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA DIRIGERA | A straightforward IKEA-centred installation | Named physical hub; cross-brand functions vary by device | IKEA ecosystem; selected Matter/Zigbee interoperability | Nov 2026 |
| Home Assistant Green | People who want extensive local control and customization | Controller only; add the radio hardware your devices need | Home Assistant; Zigbee, Thread or EU Z-Wave through compatible adapters | Nov 2026 |
| Homey Pro | A multiprotocol controller after model-by-model verification | Multiple radios in one product, but individual feature support still varies | Multiprotocol; confirm exact model and regional SKU | Nov 2026 |
What should you check before buying a hub?
Make a device-and-automation inventory first. A hub is suitable only when it can communicate with every required device, expose the functions your automations use and operate within your country’s electrical and radio requirements.
- List exact models. Record the manufacturer, model number, hardware revision and current firmware for every sensor, lamp, lock, thermostat, camera and plug you plan to use. “Zigbee bulb” or “Matter sensor” is not specific enough.
- Write the required behaviors. Note whether you need dimming, energy readings, temperature calibration, lock control, scene activation, firmware updates or only on/off switching. A bridge may expose a device while omitting one or more of these functions.
- Identify each radio and dependency. Mark every device as Matter-over-Wi-Fi, Matter-over-Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or another technology. Record whether it needs a manufacturer bridge, a Thread Border Router or a cloud account.
- Match the hub’s exposed support. Check the hub maker’s current compatibility guidance for the exact model and the functions it exposes. A shared protocol logo is only a starting point.
- Check the destination country. Verify the socket and plug format, mains voltage and frequency requirements stated by the maker, the regional radio version and local retailer availability.
Is Matter the same as Thread?
No. Matter is an application-layer standard intended to make supported smart-home devices interoperable. Thread is a low-power IPv6 mesh network used by some devices, including some Matter products; it does not define the device features or guarantee that two products implement the same commands.

A Thread-based device needs access to a Thread Border Router that connects the Thread mesh to your IP network. A Wi-Fi Matter plug does not need Thread, but it still needs the commissioning method, local network and controller that its maker specifies.

When a product says “Matter over Thread,” check three separate items: whether the device is certified, whether your chosen controller can commission and control that device type, and whether a compatible Thread Border Router is present. A multiprotocol hub may contain a Thread radio yet still require a particular software configuration or an additional border-router function.
Do I need a hub for Matter devices?
Not always, but many Matter installations still need a controller. A phone app can commission some products, while automations, remote access, multi-admin sharing and device management generally require a Matter controller. Thread products additionally need Thread infrastructure.
Determine which controller will own the Matter fabric and whether you want one fabric or several. If you use multiple ecosystems, confirm that each can be added as a Matter administrator and that the device’s implemented features remain available after sharing. Certification means the product passed the standard’s requirements; it does not mean every controller exposes every optional feature.
Will Zigbee devices work with a Matter hub?
Only through hardware and software that explicitly support them. Zigbee and Matter are different protocols. A hub can contain a Zigbee radio, or a bridge can translate selected Zigbee devices into Matter, but neither arrangement guarantees complete feature parity.
Before relying on a bridge, check the exact Zigbee model, supported clusters or capabilities, firmware-update path and whether the bridge exposes readings, scenes, buttons and diagnostics. IKEA notes that supported features can vary between brands because products implement Matter or Zigbee differently. Treat a “Matter bridge” as a compatibility layer with a defined device list, not as a universal Zigbee adapter.

How should you handle Z-Wave in Europe?
Choose Z-Wave hardware intended for the EU region. Z-Wave uses regional radio variants, so an imported controller or USB adapter can be unsuitable even when the software appears identical. Confirm the destination-market SKU before purchase and make sure the hub, adapter and devices use compatible regional versions.
Record the exact Z-Wave model and firmware for every existing device. Some hubs support only a subset of command classes or require a vendor-specific integration. If you are migrating, check whether security keys, inclusion modes and associations can be transferred; otherwise, budget time to exclude and re-include devices.

What hardware does Home Assistant Green require?
Home Assistant Green is a physical controller, not a guarantee that every radio is built in. Build a bill of materials around your devices: the Green unit, a compatible Zigbee or Thread adapter when required, or an EU-region Z-Wave adapter for Z-Wave products.
Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is a separate radio option. Check its current supported configuration before planning a deployment; do not assume one adapter simultaneously provides independent Zigbee and Thread networks in every setup. For Z-Wave, the EU-region Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2 variant is the relevant option when your devices require it. Also account for Ethernet or Wi-Fi networking, power, USB placement and a backup plan for the controller’s configuration.
Which hub profile fits your installation?
IKEA DIRIGERA
DIRIGERA is a sensible shortlist for a home built mainly around IKEA devices and a relatively guided setup. It is a named physical hub rather than a generic radio, and IKEA documents interoperability with other ecosystems. However, cross-brand features vary, and DIRIGERA should not be presented as a controller for every Zigbee product. Verify each non-IKEA model and the functions you need, along with availability in your country.

Home Assistant Green
Green suits readers who value local control, broad integration choices and the ability to select radios independently. Its flexibility brings extra decisions: adapters, backups, network design, firmware maintenance and troubleshooting are your responsibility. Choose it when you are willing to maintain a bill of materials and validate integrations rather than expecting one box to solve every protocol.
Homey Pro
Homey Pro is a possible multiprotocol route, but a radio list is not a universal feature guarantee. Verify the exact current model, destination-market SKU, supported device list and exposed functions. Check how automations behave if a vendor account or cloud service is unavailable, and confirm that the product is sold with the electrical and radio specification required in your country.
How do you verify a device before ordering?
Use this model-level checklist for every purchase:
- Certification: For a Matter claim, search the exact model in the Connectivity Standards Alliance certification directory. A logo on a retailer page is not enough if the model number differs.
- Transport: Identify Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave or Bluetooth. For Thread, confirm that a Thread Border Router will be available and connected to the same suitable IP network.
- Controller path: Check whether the device pairs directly with your hub or needs a vendor bridge. Note whether the bridge exposes the controls and sensors your automations require.
- Firmware: Find out how updates are delivered, whether an account is mandatory and whether updates can be performed locally. Firmware requirements can change compatibility.
- Electrical fit: For powered products, match the plug and socket format used in the destination country and compare the maker’s voltage, frequency, current and load ratings with your installation.
- Conformity and security: Inspect the maker’s EU conformity information and current security-update policy. CE marking addresses applicable conformity obligations; it does not certify cross-brand interoperability.
- Availability: Confirm that the exact regional model is actually supplied to your country, including replacement accessories and warranty support.
An EU-format product such as an Aqara Smart Plug EU can be a useful example of the form factor to look for, but it does not prove that a particular national socket, hub, firmware version or older retailer stock is right for your installation.
What does “EU-compatible” actually include?
EU compatibility has several independent dimensions. The physical plug must fit the country’s socket system, and the electrical rating must suit the circuit and appliance. A device can have a European plug yet still be unavailable, unsupported or incorrectly rated for a particular national installation.
Radio equipment also has regional requirements. Select the correct Z-Wave variant and verify that the manufacturer supplies the device for your destination market. Keep the declaration of conformity, model number and firmware record with your installation documents so you can identify the product later.

Cybersecurity obligations are time-dependent. European Commission radio-equipment cybersecurity requirements apply from 1 August 2025, so they are relevant to products placed on the market in November 2026. The Cyber Resilience Act is a separate framework; its main obligations apply from 11 December 2027. Do not describe the later date as if it were the current deadline, and do not treat either milestone as proof that two products will interoperate.
Can a local hub keep every device offline?
No. Local operation is a property of the complete system, not a slogan attached to a hub. Some devices and automations can run on the LAN or on the controller, while account login, remote access, voice services, firmware delivery or a vendor bridge may still require the internet.
For each device, ask whether commissioning, normal control, schedules, notifications and updates continue during an internet outage. Put the controller, access points and Thread Border Router on reliable power; if a router reboot breaks name resolution or multicast traffic, Matter commissioning and discovery can fail even though the controller is local.
Document cloud dependencies before you promise offline behavior to household members. A local-first design can reduce outages and privacy exposure, but it does not automatically remove every account or online service requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat network design helps Matter and Thread?
Use a stable home IP network with consistent Wi-Fi coverage, sensible multicast handling and a clear separation between trusted smart-home devices and guest devices. Avoid placing a Thread Border Router or Matter controller on an isolated guest network that cannot reach the devices it must commission.

Give the controller a predictable address or reservation, keep firmware current and record the network name and credentials securely. If you use more than one Matter ecosystem, note which controller commissioned each device. Duplicate fabrics, renamed networks and reset devices are common sources of confusion during recovery.
How do you troubleshoot a device that will not pair?
- Recheck the model. Compare the label, SKU and hardware revision with the hub’s compatibility entry.
- Confirm the transport. A Thread device cannot be paired just because the hub has Wi-Fi; verify the Thread Border Router and IP path.
- Remove stale ownership. A device may still belong to another Matter fabric, Zigbee coordinator or Z-Wave network. Follow the maker’s documented factory-reset process.
- Update in the supported order. Bring the hub, bridge and device firmware to versions the vendors list as compatible, then retry commissioning.
- Test one variable. Pair the device near the controller or border router, then move it to its final location after commissioning. Keep other bridges powered so you do not accidentally change the network being tested.
- Check missing functions. If basic on/off works but a sensor, button or energy reading does not, the integration may expose only a subset of the device’s capabilities.
- Record the result. Save the model, firmware, reset method and working integration so a future replacement uses the same known-good path.
Which buying mistakes are most expensive?
- Choosing the hub first: You may end up buying extra bridges or replacing devices that use an unsupported radio.
- Equating Matter with Thread: A Matter-over-Wi-Fi product and a Matter-over-Thread product have different infrastructure needs.
- Assuming protocol equals feature parity: Dimming, energy data, alarms and firmware updates may disappear through a bridge.
- Importing a Z-Wave controller: The wrong regional radio variant can make an otherwise compatible system unsuitable.
- Ignoring plugs and ratings: A physically similar adapter may not match the destination socket or electrical load.
- Buying on a logo alone: Certification does not promise support for every optional command or every hub.
- Promising “all local” control: Accounts, remote access and updates may still depend on a vendor cloud.
How we picked the practical options
The options above are organized by the trade-offs documented for them: compatibility with owned devices, exact-model feature coverage, need for separate Thread, Zigbee or Z-Wave hardware, setup and maintenance effort, local-operation preferences, regional electrical and radio fit, and update-support information. No performance ranking is implied; the right choice depends on your inventory and the functions you need.
A final purchase-and-install checklist
- Inventory every exact device model and required automation.
- Verify Matter certification where claimed and read the selected hub’s model-level support notes.
- Confirm Thread Border Router access for every Thread device.
- Confirm the bridge and exposed functions for Zigbee devices.
- Buy EU-region Z-Wave hardware when Z-Wave is involved.
- Match each powered product to the country’s plug, socket and electrical rating.
- Review conformity information and the manufacturer’s security-update policy.
- Plan network placement, backups, reset procedures and cloud dependencies.
- Recheck firmware, model numbers, retailer stock and national availability immediately before ordering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one adapter provide both Zigbee and Thread?
Some adapters support more than one radio protocol, but the supported configuration may require choosing one role or changing it in software. Check the adapter’s current documentation instead of assuming simultaneous Zigbee and Thread service.
What happens to Matter devices when the internet is down?
Devices and automations that are implemented locally may continue over the home network, but remote access, account authentication, voice services or firmware downloads can stop. Check each device and integration separately; a local controller does not guarantee every function is offline-capable.
How can I tell whether a Matter listing is genuine?
Match the exact model and hardware revision against the Connectivity Standards Alliance certification directory and the manufacturer’s support page. Retailer wording, packaging and a generic Matter icon are insufficient if they do not identify the certified model.
Do EU electrical rules make a smart plug safe for every appliance?
No. The plug format and conformity information are only part of the decision. Compare the maker’s voltage, current and load ratings with the appliance and installation, and follow local electrical rules or qualified advice for high-load equipment.
