Those goals use separate character-building choices. Check your campaign’s edition and allowed sources with the DM first; if you want a scholar who studies and wields magic, Wizard is the clearest thematic starting point in the official class material.
Choose what “Arcana-focused” means
Arcana-focused can describe a skill specialist, an arcane spellcaster, or a character who combines both. Decide which matters most before choosing a class: the build choices for an Arcana check and for spellcasting are not interchangeable.
- Arcana skill specialist: Prioritize being good at Arcana checks. Choose a class for the party role you want, then select Arcana proficiency using options available under your campaign’s rules.
- Arcane caster: Make arcane magic the character’s main identity and focus on the class and spellcasting options permitted in your game.
- Both: Plan for the skill and spellcasting aspects separately. A strong Arcana check modifier does not grant extra spells, and choosing a spellcasting class does not automatically grant Arcana expertise.
Confirm the campaign’s rules before choosing options
D&D Beyond’s 2024 character-creation guidance recommends talking with the DM about the planned game before choosing a class and determining the character’s origin and ability scores. Ask what edition and books the campaign uses, what level characters start at, and whether playtest material is allowed. The answers determine which options you can actually use.
Choose a class direction
For a magical scholar and arcane caster
Wizard is the most direct thematic choice for a character centered on studying and wielding magic, based on the official class material. It is a natural fit for a scholar concept, but it does not by itself settle your Arcana skill choices. Make those separately under the rules your campaign permits.

For an Arcana skill specialist
You do not have to make Arcana the character’s whole class identity to prioritize Arcana checks. Pick a class that serves the role you want in the party, then check which character-creation options let you take Arcana proficiency. The available sources do not establish a complete, verified 2024 class-by-class proficiency progression, so confirm the relevant choices in the books your DM allows rather than relying on a generic level-by-level recipe.
For a character who wants both
First select a class direction that supports the kind of magic and party role you want. Then check how your permitted character options provide Arcana proficiency. Treat the two goals as related parts of the concept, not as one mechanic: spellcasting and skill checks are distinct.

Decide whether to use playtest subclasses
The 2025 Arcane Subclasses PDF says it uses 2024 Player’s Handbook rules and presents its subclasses as playtest material. Playtest options can change before official publication, so they are not automatically available or final character options. Ask your DM before building around one.

For a revised-rules campaign, consult the 2024 Player’s Handbook and follow the DM’s source list. D&D Beyond’s official character-creation guidance also recognizes a digital character sheet as a way to track a character. Whether you build on paper or digitally, record Arcana proficiency separately from class spellcasting choices so the character sheet reflects both accurately.
