Check the rules in your current game version before relying on older build advice: Ankama announced a substantial redesign in August 2025, but the available announcements do not establish which of its mechanics are live as of October 7, 2026.
Check which Waven ruleset you are building for
Waven combines tactical turn-based combat with deck-building, spells, companions, and equipment. Ankama’s 2023 fact sheet describes the game broadly, but it predates a later redesign announcement. Older guides may therefore explain a different system.
In an August 5, 2025 community update, Ankama described a redesigned system with a 16-card deck, shared spells, companion cards, and equipment removals. The post also said its choices could still change before the game’s official launch. Treat those details as announced mechanics, not as verified instructions for the current client. Ankama’s December 10, 2025 announcement said it planned to present its 2026 directions on December 17; that page does not establish what was subsequently announced or which rules are live now.
Before choosing a build, check the current client’s card text, deck limits, resource rules, and equipment options. If those differ from a guide, follow the game version and mode you are actually playing.

Start with the hero, then choose a combat plan
Under the 2025 redesign as announced, each hero has four unique spells and one unique passive, while most other spells are shared. That makes the hero’s particular abilities a useful starting point: identify what they reward or enable, then pick a role or play pattern that makes those strengths matter.
Think of a role as a plan for how you want turns to unfold, not as a mandatory party slot. You might want to focus on direct pressure, control the pace of a fight, or support a durable approach. The sources do not establish that Waven requires a fixed tank, healer, and damage-dealer formation. Avoid assigning a role just because it is conventional; use the hero’s actual abilities and the demands of your activity to guide the choice.

Make spells and companions support the same plan
The announced redesign treats spells and companions as parts of one 16-card deck. Choose each card for a job in your plan: a spell might help set up or sustain the hero’s approach, while a companion might add pressure or another useful effect. A collection of individually appealing cards can still feel incoherent if they do not help the same combat plan.
Account for companion behavior
In Ankama’s announcement, companions are cards played from hand. After being played, a companion returns to the draw pile. If it is drawn while still on the field, it can be replayed onto itself to rank up for a reduced Command Point cost; the post says ranking up improves its attack and health and heals it. It also says companions unlock a unique special spell at a given level. These are descriptions of the planned redesign, so verify the live rules and card text before building around them.

Plan for the resources your cards require
The announced system uses Action Points for spells and Command Points for companions. Ankama says Command Points come from particular board actions or spell cards. If these rules apply in your version, make sure your deck can generate the resources it needs as well as spend them. A deck that asks for more Command Points than its play pattern can produce may struggle to use its companions when they matter; a spell-heavy plan likewise needs to account for Action Point costs.
Evaluate a build before committing to it
No current-build rankings or tested combinations are established by the available sources, so use these checks to judge your own choices rather than treating any named lineup as a proven best team.
- Role fit: Does each chosen card contribute to the combat plan you want the hero to execute?
- Synergy: Do the hero’s unique abilities, selected spells, and companion effects reinforce one another?
- Resource fit: If the announced resource rules apply, can your deck generate and spend the Action Points and Command Points its plan requires?
- Version and mode: Does the advice match your current ruleset and the activity you intend to play, such as PvE or PvP? The available material does not validate present-day, mode-specific builds.
Why older build advice may not transfer
An older JeuxOnLine overview describes an earlier system involving classes, elemental gauges, equipment, and decks of six to fifteen spells. Ankama’s later redesign announcement instead describes a 16-card deck and says rings, armbands, and brooches were to be removed. These accounts reflect different points in the game’s development; neither an old guide nor the redesign announcement alone confirms the current client’s rules.
Use older pages for historical context, not as proof that a class, gauge, equipment slot, or deck limit still works the same way. Confirm card availability and rules in your game before investing time in a build.
