A large premarket move is a prompt to investigate—not proof of a lasting catalyst or a prediction of the opening price.
Know when premarket trading takes place
Nasdaq lists its premarket session as 4:00–9:30 a.m. Eastern Time and regular U.S. market hours as 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET. Session availability and duration can vary by market venue and broker. The SEC notes that “the duration of extended-hours trading sessions varies between markets and trading venues.” See the SEC’s extended-hours trading bulletin and Nasdaq Market Activity for their respective schedules and information.
Nasdaq Trader announced a separate 9:00 p.m.–4:00 a.m. ET session expected to begin December 6, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that date is in the future, so it is not part of the current premarket schedule described above. Check Nasdaq Trader’s announcement for any updated launch status if you are reading this after the planned date.
Build the list around reasons to pay attention
Begin with company announcements, scheduled earnings or other known company events, and unusual price or trading activity. A percentage-gainers list can help you discover candidates, but it does not establish why a stock is moving or whether the move will continue. Keep the reason beside each ticker so you can distinguish a confirmed event from a move that still needs an explanation.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
There is no source-supported universal minimum for premarket volume, gap size, or number of names to include. Set any limits to suit your own workflow; do not treat them as market-wide rules.
Verify the catalyst and its timing
When a stock appears on a scanner or in a news summary, look for the underlying company release or filing. Note when it was published and what it actually confirms. Separate company-reported facts from commentary, rumors, and third-party summaries. A scheduled event is different from a surprise announcement, and neither guarantees a particular market reaction.

Nasdaq MarketWatch says temporary-halt consideration takes place during regular hours and during premarket and after-hours sessions. Its review may involve verifying company information, and temporary halts can occur around material news. Read the Nasdaq MarketWatch procedures if a halt or pending announcement may affect a candidate.
Check what the premarket quote actually tells you
For each candidate, record the quote’s source, timestamp, and session. Compare the observed move with the prior regular-session close, then inspect the available trading activity and bid–ask spread. A displayed last trade is not necessarily a price available to every investor.

Extended-hours trading can involve fewer participants, lower liquidity, wider spreads, and sharper price swings than regular trading. Trading systems are not linked, and consolidated quote and trade information may not be readily available; a displayed quote can be incomplete or specific to one venue. A premarket price may change before the open and need not match the regular-session close or opening price. The SEC explains these limitations in its investor bulletin.
There is an additional source of reported off-exchange activity: Nasdaq Trader says FINRA/Nasdaq Trade Reporting Facility early-morning reporting began at 4:00 a.m. ET on business days effective March 30, 2026. Nasdaq describes availability through specified data products. This expands reporting visibility; it does not make premarket activity a complete, consolidated view across all markets. See Nasdaq Trader’s service notice.

Check the stock’s status and the day’s calendar
Before keeping a name on your list, check for a trading halt, suspension, or pending material announcement. Nasdaq’s market information page provides links to halt and suspension information; its MarketWatch page describes review during premarket and after-hours sessions. Nasdaq identifies news, unusual activity, regulatory concerns, and technical issues among possible reasons for a halt. Start with Nasdaq Market Activity and Nasdaq MarketWatch.
Check the market schedule and the time of any relevant company event. This helps distinguish an inactive or closed session from a lack of trading interest, and helps you avoid treating a delayed quote as current.

Turn each candidate into a usable watchlist entry
Keep a stock only if you understand why it is on the list and have enough relevant information to monitor it. A compact entry can include:
- Ticker and reason: the company event or activity that drew your attention.
- Evidence and timing: the source of the catalyst and when it was published or scheduled.
- Price context: the prior regular-session close, observed premarket range, quote timestamp, and data source.
- Activity and spread: what trading activity is available and the bid–ask spread, if shown.
- Status: whether the stock is halted or suspended, or has a pending material announcement.
- What to monitor after the open: a specific price level or event that would make you reassess the candidate.
The point is to make the watchlist actionable as a monitoring aid, not to turn it into a prediction. If you cannot identify the catalyst or judge the quote’s context, mark that uncertainty rather than letting a dramatic percentage change stand in for an explanation.
Choose tools for coverage, not just a flashy scanner
When evaluating a platform, check whether it exposes premarket quotes and the hours it covers; the source, delay, and venue coverage of its quotes and trades; whether it lets you save symbols and annotate catalysts; and whether halt and company-news information is available. Also check your broker’s session and order rules, along with any fees or market-data entitlements. Feature availability, quote coverage, and pricing vary, so verify them with the provider rather than assuming a scanner’s displayed data are comprehensive.
Keep a watchlist separate from an order
Adding a stock to a monitoring list does not mean you should place a trade. Extended-hours conditions can make execution materially different from what a screen suggests. The SEC says many brokers currently accept only limit orders for extended-hours trades; broker rules can also differ on eligible securities, routing, session access, order types, and whether unfilled orders cancel or carry into regular hours. Check your broker’s current policy before submitting an order, and consult the SEC’s extended-hours guidance.
