Yes—a Raspberry Pi can run classic Macintosh software through emulation. The RPi-Mac project is the most direct route: its ready-made image boots Mac OS 8.1 and includes System 7.5 and a System 7.5.3 install CD image for recovery. The compact build targets the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, with Pi 4 and Pi 5 also documented. It recreates a classic Mac software environment; it is not original Apple hardware or a licensed hardware clone.

Choose an image-based build or a hands-on setup

For a straightforward bootable system, use RPi-Mac. It supplies distinct images for HDMI and the Waveshare 2.8-inch DPI LCD, and documents support for the Pi Zero 2 W, Pi 4, and Pi 5. Check the repository’s board and display notes before choosing a panel: support depends on both the display overlay and Pi model. See the RPi-Mac project site and its repository.

MacintoshPi is a separate, more hands-on option. Its repository describes a package-based setup using a build script to run Mac OS 7, 8, and 9 under Raspberry Pi. Its documented example integrates a Pi 3B+ and HDMI LCD into a restored Macintosh Classic II case. The projects do not provide a controlled speed or feature comparison, so choose by installation approach, documented OS choices, hardware compatibility, and how much case work you want to undertake.

Choice Installation Documented software and hardware Display and enclosure considerations
RPi-Mac ready image Flash a supplied image to microSD and boot; first start includes setup work. Mac OS 8.1 boots from the image; System 7.5 disk and System 7.5.3 install CD are included. Pi Zero 2 W is the lead target; Pi 4 and Pi 5 are also documented. Separate HDMI and Waveshare 2.8-inch DPI LCD images; check board-specific panel support. A compact enclosure is optional.

Documented example uses an HDMI LCD in a restored Classic II case; the repository example is not a compatibility guarantee for other displays or cases.

What you need for an RPi-Mac build

  • Raspberry Pi: The Zero 2 W is the project’s compact route; Pi 4 and Pi 5 are repository-documented alternatives.
  • microSD card: Use an 8 GB or larger card for the ready image. A card reader may be needed to write it from another computer. Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation covers boot media and general setup.
  • Display: Choose an HDMI monitor or television, or the specific Waveshare 2.8-inch DPI LCD image. Do not assume another DPI screen or overlay will work on every Pi.
  • Matching cable: A Pi Zero 2 W uses mini-HDMI; Raspberry Pi’s setup guide specifies a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable for Zero-family boards. Confirm the connector on other Pi models.
  • Power supply: Use a supply appropriate to your exact Pi model; Raspberry Pi recommends a model-suitable official supply.
  • Input devices: A keyboard and mouse are useful for a desktop setup. Audio is optional.

A miniature enclosure is a separate design choice, not part of the ready image. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s Tiny Mac feature describes a different Pi Zero W build using a short ribbon cable, small display, microSD, power supply, screws, and a four-part 3D-printed case. It is inspiration rather than a tested RPi-Mac parts kit. Its maker, Chuck, said, “There were many, many versions of the case,” describing the design iterations.

Flash and boot the RPi-Mac image

  1. Select the image: Download the HDMI image for a standard monitor, or the Waveshare 2.8-inch DPI LCD image if using that supported display. Confirm your Pi model and panel compatibility in the project’s repository.
  2. Write the image: Use Raspberry Pi Imager’s custom-image option or balenaEtcher to flash it to an 8 GB or larger microSD card. Skip Raspberry Pi Imager’s OS customization step: the project image configures its own users and Wi-Fi.
  3. Set up Wi-Fi if needed: Follow the project’s instructions or use its SD Card Builder to prepare a personalized image. The project says credentials are embedded in custom builds; download links are private, and server builds are deleted after 24 hours.
  4. Insert the card and power on: Connect the display using the correct cable, then boot the Pi. Allow extra time on first boot: the filesystem grows and the compressed Mac OS system disk is unpacked. The project says this process triggers one automatic reboot.

What the emulation does—and what it does not

The Pi runs Macintosh software in an emulated environment; it does not become an original Apple Macintosh. The RPi-Mac project describes its code as MIT-licensed, but that license does not grant rights to Apple’s ROM or operating-system images. The project separately identifies those materials as Apple’s property and preserved for hobbyist use. Consider the provenance and rights applicable to any image files you supply or use.
