Steam provides both a legacy appreviews endpoint and the newer IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews method. Your dashboard should show the active filters and date window beside every count, because those choices change which reviews are included.
Choose a Steam review data source
Steam documents two ways to retrieve reviews for an app. The legacy endpoint is the appreviews endpoint, called as GET store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1. The newer IUserReviewsService.GetAppReviews service is documented in Steam’s Web API reference and replaces the legacy endpoint.
The interfaces return review data as JSON. The response can contain query-summary information, a cursor for pagination, and individual review records. The newer service does not require a key, but unauthenticated calls share a lower rate limit and can receive HTTP 429 responses. Anonymous responses may also be cached for up to 10 minutes, so do not assume every request reflects an immediate change.
Plan the dashboard around the data returned
Steam’s query summary can include a review score and description, plus positive, negative, and total review counts. Review records provide detail for trends and comparisons. Build views around questions you can answer from those fields, rather than presenting totals without their scope.

Place the date range and every active filter beside each chart or total. If a user selects a language, purchase type, or other filter, make clear that the displayed counts describe that subset rather than all reviews for the app.
Retrieve and paginate reviews
Both interfaces support filtering and cursor-based pagination. Steam documents recent, updated, and all review filters. To traverse reviews toward a terminal page, use recent or updated and continue with the returned cursor until the response contains no reviews. The helpfulness-oriented all mode uses sliding windows and always returns results, so it is not the documented approach for detecting an empty final page.
- Select the app and query scope. Set the app ID, review filter, language, review type, purchase type, and page size as needed. The legacy endpoint also supports the optional
filter_offtopic_activityparameter. - Request the first page. Read the JSON response’s review records and cursor. The first page may include query-summary fields.
- Store or process the page. Preserve the fields needed for the dashboard, including sentiment, timestamps, votes, purchase indicators, Early Access status, and developer response.
- Request the next page with its cursor. Continue using the selected filter and other query settings. Cursor values may need URL encoding.
- Stop when the response has no reviews. This terminal-page approach is documented for
recentandupdated, not the sliding-windowallmode.
For a dashboard that refreshes regularly, design requests to handle HTTP 429 responses rather than treating them as empty results. The Steam documentation establishes the possibility of rate limiting for calls without an app-associated key; it does not specify a particular dashboard architecture or storage system.
Make sentiment and trend counts understandable
You can show positive and negative reviews separately using the query-summary counts and each review’s recommendation field. For a time series, group records by creation timestamp when you want to show when reviews were posted, or by update timestamp when you want to show when review content changed. State the selected timestamp in the chart label.

Counts returned by Steam are app-specific and depend on the query. They are dynamic values, not universal statistics about Steam reviews. Keep the chosen filter, language, date window, and other query settings visible so readers can tell whether two charts or exports are comparable.
Account for off-topic activity
The legacy appreviews endpoint excludes off-topic reviews by default. It can include them with filter_offtopic_activity=0. If your dashboard exposes this option, make its state visible: turning it on changes the population represented by the counts. Do not compare a view that includes off-topic activity with one that excludes it as though they were the same dataset.

Respect the limits of public review data
Public access to review records does not, by itself, settle what retention, redistribution, or reuse of review text and author-related fields is permitted. Steam’s endpoint documentation describes the interfaces and available fields, but it is not a complete statement of those obligations. Check the applicable Steam terms and privacy requirements before retaining or republishing those records.
