Start with simulation and manual driving; add autonomy in stages only after steering, throttle limits, communications, and stop controls behave reliably. A closed course reduces exposure to hazards—it does not prove the vehicle is safe.
What a safe demo should—and should not—show
A hobby-scale AI driving demo can show how a model perceives a course or follows a path. It cannot establish that a full-size vehicle is roadworthy, that the software is safe for public roads, or that the system has been certified. Keep the objective narrow: for example, follow a marked loop, steer around a fixed object, or stop at a designated point.
Write down the operating domain before enabling autonomous motion. Specify the course boundary, surface, lighting, maximum speed, permitted maneuvers and target objects, who may enter the area, and the conditions that end a run. Do not include pedestrians, public traffic, or uncontrolled moving vehicles in an initial demonstration.
Choose a small platform and a controlled site
Pick a low-energy RC car
A Donkeycar-compatible RC platform is one option for an educational build. Donkeycar describes an open-source self-driving RC platform using approaches that include neural networks, computer vision, and GPS. Its documentation describes Raspberry Pi and Jetson Nano installation options and includes a PiRacer Pro build path. These are platform and build references, not safety certifications. Before buying, check the current kit revision, included camera and computer, power arrangement, control interface, and software compatibility in the Donkeycar documentation.

Bound the course and separate people
Use a private site where access can be controlled and the car can stop without entering a hazard. Mark the driving area and a separate operator-and-observer area; keep spectators behind a barrier or outside the run area. The FAA’s guidance on autonomous ground vehicles at airports identifies remote or landside areas as preferable in that airport context because they are more controlled, less congested, and low speed. That is a site-selection principle, not permission to use airport property.
Do not set a universal speed figure: the right cap depends on the car, surface, available stopping space, and course layout. Set a conservative cap that leaves room to stop well inside the boundary, then verify it at the lowest usable throttle before any autonomous run. If the vehicle cannot reliably stop within the marked area, reduce its speed or change the course.

Build up autonomy in stages
Move to the next stage only when the previous one is repeatable. This progression adapts the UK automated-vehicle trialling code’s sequence from bench checks and simulation to controlled track or private-road testing, and Donkeycar’s manual, autosteering, and autopilot modes.
- Simulation and software checks: Test the model and control logic without moving the car. Check that the intended inputs, outputs, and stop behavior are understood before connecting drive power.
- Manual inspection and driving: Inspect the vehicle, then drive it manually at the lowest usable speed. Confirm that steering commands move the wheels in the expected direction and that the car remains controllable on the chosen surface.
- Low-speed control and stop checks: Limit throttle, check communications and controller behavior, and test that the stop command removes drive. Record a baseline manual run and note the configuration.
- Perception and control under direct human control: Evaluate the camera or other sensors and the control output while a person remains in direct control. Keep autonomy disabled during these checks.
- Autosteering with manual throttle: If using Donkeycar path following, begin with the documented autosteering/manual-throttle approach. The operator can stop by releasing the throttle while assessing steering behavior.
- Autonomous steering and throttle: Try this only after the earlier behavior is repeatable and stop criteria, roles, and recovery procedures are in place.
Donkeycar documents a controller button reserved for emergency stop, but a button assignment or software command is not proof of an independent, safety-rated stop. Test the actual control and its failure modes. Where the platform permits, consider a separate, reachable way to cut motor drive, and verify that it does not create unexpected throttle or prevent the vehicle from stopping. Do not describe any stop arrangement as fail-safe unless its behavior has been established under the failures relevant to the demo.

Assign people, roles, and a fallback before each run
One person should have the sole job of watching the vehicle and course and be able to intervene immediately. A second person can manage spectators, record the run, or operate the demonstration interface. The intervention operator should not also present, troubleshoot a laptop, or be responsible for watching a screen. Transport Canada’s testing guidance identifies distraction, fatigue, and automation bias as safety concerns.
Agree in advance on the fallback: stop the vehicle, remove the drive command, and secure it before anyone approaches. For a small course demo, a complete stop inside the course may be the practical minimal-risk condition. Check that loss of communications, software failure, sensor failure, or controller failure does not produce unexpected throttle. Until those cases have been tested, do not claim the system handles them safely.

Set abort criteria and keep a run log
End a run immediately if any of the following occurs:
- Unexpected acceleration or steering, loss of control, or apparent loss of localization.
- A stop command is missed or delayed, or communications become unreliable.
- A sensor is blocked, disconnected, or behaving unexpectedly.
- The car approaches the course boundary, or a person or animal enters the run area.
After an abort, secure the vehicle and record what happened. Resume only after reviewing the cause and the controls intended to prevent a repeat. These are practical stop criteria based on the trialling code’s emphasis on identifying risks, warning about failures, and preparing contingencies.

For each run, record the date and time, software/model and configuration versions, vehicle and battery setup, course and environmental conditions, objective, outcome, interventions, stop events, and any change from the previous run. A successful demonstration is one run under stated conditions; it is not, by itself, a validation or safety claim.

The public listing does not expose the complete paid standard, and it is not a universal legal requirement. |
| UK Department for Transport, Self-driving vehicle pilot scheme: information for applicants, published 31 March 2026. | Describes a separate pilot scheme for self-driving vehicles on roads in Great Britain, including incident-management expectations within its scope. | Its scheme covers England, Scotland, and Wales; it is distinct from this private educational demo and from the safety-driver trialling guidance. |
NHTSA’s Automated Vehicle Safety material distinguishes driver assistance from driving automation, while its Automated Driving Systems 2.0: A Vision for Safety is voluntary guidance addressing documented assessment, testing, and validation. Neither makes a hobby-course result equivalent to a road-vehicle safety assessment.
Rules for a private course, venue access, insurance, and events cannot be determined without the jurisdiction and site. Check those requirements with the relevant local authorities and venue before running the demonstration.
