Include an online course on your résumé when its skills or credential support the role you want. Use the course’s exact name, identify the provider, state when you completed it, and describe only skills or project work you can explain and demonstrate. Put the entry where it strengthens your case most: before work history when recent training is especially relevant, or after stronger relevant experience.

Decide whether the course belongs on your résumé

Compare what you learned with the requirements in the job posting. CareerOneStop recommends emphasizing job-specific skills and using relevant terms from the posting. A course is worth including when it provides evidence that you meet a requirement or have useful skills for the role; a long list of unrelated classes can distract from that evidence.

CareerOneStop says the Education section can include more than degrees: classes, certifications, volunteer training, and professional development may belong there. Its résumé guide calls Education “an essential part of your resume.” See CareerOneStop’s Education guidance and its advice on the top portion of a résumé.

Verify what you completed and what it is called

Check your completion record before writing the entry. Capture the course title as given by the provider, the institution or platform, the completion date or year, and the exact award, if any. Use the provider’s terminology rather than upgrading a course into a credential it did not award.

CareerOneStop distinguishes short-term training credentials: microcredentials focus on specific skills and may come with digital badges, while certifications are generally related to a role, technology, or industry and usually require an exam. A course-completion certificate, microcredential, badge, and exam-based certification are not interchangeable labels. Name only the award you actually received. See CareerOneStop’s short-term training overview.

Choose a section and order that fit your experience

If your résumé already has an Education section, you can include relevant course training there. If not, a clearly labeled “Training” or “Professional Development” section can make it easy to find. CareerOneStop also identifies professional development as a way to build skills and support career goals; see its professional development guidance.

  • Relevant work experience is your strongest evidence: Put Work Experience first and place Education or Training afterward.
  • You are a recent graduate or have recent, directly relevant training: Consider putting Education or Training before Work Experience so the course is visible near the top.
  • You are changing careers or want to foreground transferable skills: A combination format can highlight relevant skills while preserving your work history. CareerOneStop describes this format as useful for career changes, transferable skills, or work gaps.

CareerOneStop recommends listing the credential or program, provider, and completion year when it was completed fewer than 15 years ago. For older training, use judgment: include it if it remains relevant and useful to the application.

Write a clear course entry

Keep the entry concise. The course title, provider, and completion year let a hiring reader identify what you studied and when. Add a skills or evidence line only if it strengthens the application with relevant, verifiable detail.

For example, replace every illustrative detail below with facts you can verify:

Training & Professional Development
Data Analysis with Python, Example Learning Provider — Completed 2026
Relevant skills: Python, data cleaning, and exploratory analysis.
Course project: analyzed a publicly available dataset and documented the process in a portfolio project.

If the course awarded no credential, describe it as a course. If it awarded a credential, give that credential its actual name. Keep course learning distinct from work performed in a job; do not imply the project was professional work or claim outcomes you did not achieve.

Use a project to show how you applied the learning

A real course project can make a skills claim more concrete when it is relevant to the job. Briefly state the context, what you did, and an outcome or deliverable you can substantiate. CareerOneStop recommends describing context, work performed, and outcomes in experience bullets, with concrete specifics. Its work-experience guidance can help shape the wording.

  • Name a tool or method only if you used it and can discuss how.
  • Describe a project as coursework or a course project, not as employment.
  • Include a result only if it is real and supportable; do not invent numbers or impact.

Keep the résumé readable and easy to process

Use conventional section headings, a simple single-column layout, and consistent spacing. CareerOneStop advises avoiding tables, text boxes, columns, logos, and graphics that may confuse applicant tracking systems. Follow the employer’s requested file type. Its general guidance is one to two pages, with a second page when experience warrants it; see CareerOneStop’s résumé formatting guidance.

These are general U.S. résumé recommendations, not rules that apply to every country, employer, occupation, or course provider. Whether an individual credential is recognized or required depends on its issuer, the role, and the employer.
