To resume a failed Node.js image-resizing batch without starting over, persist progress for each image, give every input a deterministic output path, and run transformations through a bounded worker pool. On restart, compare the manifest with the files on disk and retry items that are unfinished, missing, or no longer valid. Publish each completed image before recording its success, so a crash cannot leave the manifest claiming that an unpublished file is done.
What makes an image-resizing batch resumable?
A counter held only in memory disappears when the process exits. A resumable job needs durable, item-level state—typically pending, running, succeeded, or failed—plus a restart step that checks whether each recorded result still exists and is usable.
Keep the job contract stable and explicit: source and destination roots, accepted input formats, dimensions, resize fit and positioning, output format and quality, metadata policy, and whether smaller images may be enlarged. Include these settings in a transform version or fingerprint. If the settings change, treat prior outputs as needing revalidation or regeneration rather than silently reusing them.
Give each source a deterministic destination. Preserving a safe relative path under the output root avoids collisions between files with the same basename in different folders. Alternatively, derive a stable output key from the normalized relative path. Record the source identity and transform version used to create the output; only reuse an existing file when those values still match.

How should the manifest and filesystem be reconciled on restart?
Treat the manifest as the scheduling record, but verify the filesystem before skipping work. A useful item record includes a stable source key, source path or identity, destination path, transform version, status, attempt count, timestamps, and the last error. Enumerate the current eligible inputs at startup and compare them with that record.
- If an item is pending or failed, schedule it according to the retry policy.
- If the manifest says succeeded but the output is missing or fails the application’s validation checks, retry it.
- If an output exists but has no matching manifest record, reuse it only when the application can reliably establish that it belongs to the same source and transform version. Otherwise, regenerate it.
- If an input has been removed from a changing catalog, record that fact or remove its output according to the job’s explicit mirroring policy.
Define what “valid output” means for the application—for example, that the file exists and can be opened by the relevant image-reading code. A filename alone does not prove that a previous run completed the intended transformation.
How do you limit parallel image processing?
Use a fixed-size worker pool or a queue with a maximum number of active transformations. Avoid creating a promise for every image and allowing the entire batch to run at once: large source images and concurrent processing can put pressure on memory and other runtime resources.

There is no universal safe concurrency limit. Measure peak RSS, elapsed time, CPU use, and error rate with representative images in the actual deployment environment, then adjust the limit to fit its operating constraints. Node.js also documents a concurrency option for selected Readable methods, including map and forEach; it limits simultaneous callback invocations. Those helpers are optional—an explicit queue or worker pool can implement the same scheduling boundary. See the Node.js stream documentation.
Which Sharp resize mode should you choose?
Choose fit behavior based on the catalog’s visual requirements, not just the target dimensions. When both width and height are supplied, Sharp defaults to cover, so specify the mode explicitly to make the output contract clear. Sharp allows one resize operation in a pipeline; compose the intended resize once. Its behavior is documented in the Sharp resize API.
| Fit | Aspect ratio | Result | Product-image consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
cover |
Preserved | Fills both target dimensions; excess is cropped or clipped. | Useful for a consistent frame, but the crop can remove product details. It is Sharp’s default when both dimensions are set. |
contain |
Preserved | Fits inside both dimensions; a background may be added where needed. | Keeps the full product visible, though the image may not fill the frame. |
fill |
Not preserved | Stretches the image to both target dimensions. | Can distort the product. |
inside |
Preserved | Resizes to stay within both target dimensions. | Fits when the output should not exceed either dimension; it does not guarantee that both dimensions are reached. |
outside |
Preserved | Resizes to reach at least both target dimensions. | May exceed a target dimension; consider the later crop or layout behavior. |
For cover crops, Sharp also supports positioning and strategies such as entropy and attention. The right crop still depends on the images and merchandising requirements, so review representative results. Set withoutEnlargement when smaller inputs should not be upscaled.

How should an item be published and checkpointed?
Use an order that makes interrupted work detectable and recoverable. A practical per-item sequence is:
- Record the item as running, with an attempt identifier.
- Transform the source to a temporary file located on the destination filesystem.
- Await the transformation, then check that the temporary output exists and passes the application’s readability or validity check.
- Rename the temporary file to its final destination.
- Only after publication succeeds, persist the item as succeeded.
Node’s fsPromises.rename(oldPath, newPath) fulfills when the rename succeeds; see the filesystem API documentation. That operation alone does not establish crash durability for the combined output-and-manifest protocol. There is also a failure window after the rename but before the success checkpoint. On restart, the reconciler must safely recognize that case or regenerate the output.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose whether abandoned temporary files should be removed or retained for diagnostics. Do not allow multiple writers to update the same manifest without coordination: Node warns that issuing overlapping writeFile() calls to the same file without waiting for settlement is unsafe. Cancellation of writeFile() is best effort, so it does not prove that no bytes were written. See the writeFile documentation. A checkpoint writer can serialize updates and replace a checkpoint using a temporary-file-and-rename approach, but test the durability behavior on the target filesystem and operating system.

How should cancellation work?
Make cancellation observable to active work and wait for workers to settle before the job exits. For stream-shaped work, Node’s node:stream/promises pipeline() accepts an AbortSignal. When the signal is aborted, the underlying pipeline is destroyed and the promise fails with an AbortError. Do not mark cancelled work as successful; leave it retryable or record it as cancelled according to the application’s state model. See the Node.js stream documentation.
How should failures and retries be recorded?
Keep errors attached to individual items so one bad source does not erase progress on unrelated images. Record enough context to diagnose and act: stable source key, source and destination paths, transform version, attempt count, error class and message, and the time of failure.
Where practical, distinguish permanent input problems, such as unsupported or corrupt images, from transient filesystem or resource failures. Set a retry cap or an operator-controlled policy so a permanently bad input does not loop indefinitely. Continue processing unrelated items when safe, but make the overall job report failure or return a nonzero result if items remain failed when that is part of the operational contract. A task is not complete merely because it was dequeued or its promise started.

How can you test restart safety?
Test the pipeline as a state machine, deliberately interrupting it at different points. Verify that each case safely skips, retries, or reports a clear failure:
- A clean run and a second run after the batch is complete.
- A restart after several items succeeded.
- Interruption during a transform.
- Interruption after a temporary output is written but before it is renamed.
- Interruption after rename but before the success checkpoint.
- A corrupt input and a missing or modified source.
- Changed resize settings and duplicate source basenames.
Which Node.js version should you target?
As of October 4, 2026, the official Node.js release page lists v24 and v22 as LTS and v26 as Current. Node.js recommends Active LTS or Maintenance LTS for production applications. Check the release table and Sharp’s runtime requirements when choosing the deployment version; the release status can change.
