This tutorial keeps notes in the browser with IndexedDB: it is a practical fit for a local-first prototype, but it does not provide cloud sync, backup, or protection from someone who can access the device or run malicious scripts.
What you’ll build—and what you won’t
The first version will manage plain-text notes in one browser. Each note will have a stable ID, a title, a body, and creation and update timestamps. The interface needs a note list, an editor, a search field, and clear feedback when a save succeeds or fails.
Leave accounts, cross-device sync, rich-text editing, sharing, and AI processing of note contents out of this version. Each adds implementation and privacy decisions that can be handled separately after the basic workflow works. The data model is a tutorial choice, not a universal standard.
Choose the storage model before asking for code
For structured data that stays in the browser, use IndexedDB. OWASP calls IndexedDB the current standard for structured client-side storage; MDN describes browser storage as useful for preserving state and supporting offline work. Storage quotas and persistence behavior vary by browser and user settings, so do not promise that notes are permanent or backed up. OWASP HTML5 Security Cheat Sheet · MDN: Client-side storage

IndexedDB stores data in the user’s browser profile. It suits a single-device prototype that should keep working offline, but it does not synchronize notes to another device or provide a separate recovery copy. An account-backed service can enable cross-device access, but then the project must also address authentication, authorization, secure credential handling, and protected network transport. There is no single best persistence choice for every product.
Use the AI assistant in bounded steps
An assistant such as Codex can help write and review code, but generated changes still need human inspection and testing. Codex access, eligible plans, and workspace controls can vary by product surface and settings; check OpenAI’s current plan and availability information and Codex documentation before choosing it. Give the assistant the relevant project context and one concrete task at a time. Ask it to identify changed files, assumptions, and checks, then inspect the diff before accepting the work.

- Describe the existing project. Tell the assistant the framework and language, how to run the app, and any conventions or tests already present. Ask it to inspect the project and propose a small implementation plan without changing files.
- Define the note shape and behavior. Ask for a note type with an ID, title, body, created timestamp, and updated timestamp. Specify what happens when a note is selected, edited, or deleted. Require the assistant to state its assumptions.
- Build the interface with temporary data. Request a note list, editor, search field, and create/delete controls. Keeping persistence separate at first makes the visible interactions easier to review.
- Add IndexedDB persistence. Ask for a small storage layer with functions to list, create, update, and delete notes. Require errors to reach the interface rather than being silently swallowed.
- Connect save status and search. Ask the assistant to show a visible success or error state after each save, and to filter notes by title and body. Specify whether search should update as the user types.
- Review and verify each change. Inspect the diff, ask for an explanation of unfamiliar code, and run the project’s existing checks and manual workflow. Do not treat a confident explanation as proof that the code works.

Give the assistant precise implementation requests
Specific requests make it easier to see whether a change matches the intended behavior. Adapt these prompts to your project rather than asking for a complete app in one pass.

Build the first interface
“Inspect this project and tell me how to run it. Then add a plain-text notes interface with a list, title and body editor, search field, and controls to create and delete notes. Use temporary in-memory data for now. Keep the existing framework and styling conventions. Before changing files, summarize the plan. Afterward, list changed files, explain assumptions, and tell me how to verify the behavior.”
Add browser persistence
“Replace the temporary note data with IndexedDB persistence. Use a stable ID, title, body, created timestamp, and updated timestamp. Keep storage operations in a separate module with list, create, update, and delete functions. Show a visible success or error message when a write finishes. Handle database errors without silently losing them. Show the planned changes first, then summarize the diff and verification steps.”

Ask for a review, not just more code
“Review the current changes for bugs in note creation, editing, deletion, searching, and IndexedDB error handling. Do not change files yet. Identify specific risks, explain why each matters, and suggest a check or test for each one.”

After implementing the features, verify them in the browser. Use the project’s existing automated checks where available; the exact commands depend on its framework and setup.

- Create a note with a title and body, then confirm it appears in the list.
- Edit the note and confirm the updated content is shown.
- Reload the page and check whether the note remains in the same browser profile.
- Search for text that appears in a title and in a body; confirm the intended matches appear.
- Delete a note and confirm it disappears from the list and stays deleted after reload.
- Check that save feedback appears only after the storage operation succeeds, and that a failure is not presented as a successful save.
- Try an empty title or body and confirm the app handles it consistently with its stated rules.
These checks verify the basic workflow, not every browser’s quota, eviction, or privacy behavior. Browser storage limits and settings vary; avoid presenting local persistence as a guaranteed backup.
Protect notes and be explicit about AI data flows
Browser storage is not a confidentiality boundary. Scripts running on the page can access or alter stored data, and someone with access to the local browser profile may be able to read or modify it. Treat anything read from IndexedDB as untrusted input: render note text as text, not executable HTML, and avoid inserting user content into the page with unsafe HTML APIs. Keep credentials, session identifiers, and secrets out of IndexedDB and local storage. OWASP details these risks and recommendations in its HTML5 Security Cheat Sheet.
This version does not send note text to an AI service. If you later add summarization or another AI feature, make the data flow clear before the user triggers it: identify what note content is sent, which service receives it, and what action causes the transfer. Keep the feature optional rather than forwarding private notes silently. The provider’s API terms and data practices need to be evaluated separately.
If you extend the project into a mobile app that handles sensitive information, security becomes a separate design task.
