Build a closed shelter with solid walls, a roof, and one entrance you can close. Then light the interior and nearby dark ground. Walls and a roof help keep approaching mobs from reaching you; lighting reduces ordinary hostile mob spawning in dark areas. A fence can add another barrier, but in Bedrock Edition, nearby slabs or raised blocks may give mobs a way over it.
Build a closed shelter first
Choose a spot and make a compact perimeter of solid blocks. Close the top with a roof, too: the goal is to separate yourself from mobs approaching from outside, not just to surround the floor. Minecraft’s first-night survival guide explains that blocks between you and mobs help prevent them from reaching you, and that an enclosed space is easier to manage than open terrain.
Keep the entrance controlled
Leave one entrance and use a door or another closable arrangement. Close it when you are inside. This is a practical way to maintain the barrier; it is not a guarantee against every mob or mechanic, so avoid treating any single entrance design as universally secure.
Light the inside and nearby dark areas
Place torches or other available light sources around the interior, including corners and sections where shadows remain. Minecraft’s first-night guide recommends torches and says most hostile mobs appear when the game’s light source reaches 0. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.18 release notes, published in 2021, specify that monsters spawn only where block light is 0, while sky light still prevents spawning as before. This is a versioned rule, not a guarantee covering every later exception or dimension.

Where practical, light the ground immediately outside the house and look for dark nearby spaces, such as cave openings or tunnels. A lit interior addresses ordinary natural spawning under the cited rules, but does not automatically deal with every possible entrance, spawner, special event, or version-specific mechanic. The sources do not establish a universal torch spacing for every layout and light source, so check the actual dark spots in your build rather than relying on one fixed interval.
Add a fence only if its surroundings do not defeat it
A fence can make an additional perimeter: Minecraft’s fence guidance says players and mobs cannot jump over fences unless they have Jump Boost. Bedrock Edition has a documented terrain caveat: the Bedrock 1.18.30 release notes, published in 2022, warn that mobs can jump over a fence when standing on an adjacent slab or another sufficiently high block. Keep nearby surfaces low or leave enough separation that they cannot serve as a step.

What changes by edition
The broad plan—enclose the shelter, close the entrance, and light dark areas—is useful general Overworld survival guidance. The cited spawning details are tied to specific releases:
- Java Edition: Java 1.18 notes set the monster block-light spawning threshold at 0 and say sky light still prevents spawning as before.
- Bedrock Edition: Bedrock 1.18.0 notes say monsters spawn only in complete darkness and that light sources can spawn-proof dark areas. The Bedrock 1.18.0 release notes are the source for that versioned statement.
- Bedrock fence behavior: the adjacent-slab or raised-block warning is specifically documented in Bedrock 1.18.30 notes.
Exact behavior can vary by edition, version, mob, and spawning context. Daylight is not a substitute for a shelter: although many Overworld mobs, including zombies and skeletons, burn in sunlight, dark caves and tunnels can remain dangerous.
