You can generate music on your own computer, but “local AI music studio” can mean different things: a model running offline, a local interface connected to that model, or desktop software that still sends work to cloud services. Choose the model and workflow first, then match your hardware to its documented requirements. This guide compares practical options and explains what to check before installing.

What counts as a local AI music studio?

A genuinely local workflow runs inference on your computer rather than sending the generation request to a hosted API. It can keep prompts and generated audio on-device, but only if the chosen application is actually using a local model and does not rely on cloud rendering or other online services.

There are three useful routes:

  • Local model and local interface: ACE-Step 1.5 and MusicGen have documentation for local inference. The third-party ACE-Step Studio project provides a desktop interface for ACE-Step 1.5 and says it supports offline use on supported NVIDIA GPUs.
  • Local model with a specific runtime stack: Stability AI describes Stable Audio 3.0 Small variants for CPU inference and Medium for CUDA, with setup requirements that include Flash Attention 2 for the Medium configuration.
  • Desktop app with cloud services: ACE Studio installs on Windows and macOS, but its documentation requires internet access and describes cloud rendering as well as Turbo Mode, which uses the computer’s compute. A desktop app is not automatically an offline app.

For a self-hosted deployment, Stability AI says prompts and generated audio stay within the user’s infrastructure; its API route is managed instead. Those descriptions apply to the configurations it discusses, not every product marketed as local. See its deployment comparison.

Which software route fits your goal?

Option What it offers Hardware and setup considerations Important caveats
ACE-Step 1.5 The project’s musician guide describes local generation of full songs with vocals. GPU-oriented guidance; check your GPU’s actual memory, installation route, operating system and model variant. The hardware guidance is project documentation, not an independent benchmark. Musician’s guide.
ACE-Step Studio A third-party desktop interface for ACE-Step 1.5; its repository describes Windows installer and portable-folder routes, offline use on supported NVIDIA cards, and model tiers from 3.1 GB to 18.5 GB. Confirm the current release, supported card and backend, and the size of the model tier you intend to use. Optional bundled components can have different licenses. Project repository.
MusicGen Documented variants include small (300M), medium (1.5B), melody (1.5B), large (3.3B) and melody-large (3.3B). Melody variants accept melody conditioning. Meta’s documentation recommends 16 GB of memory for its best quality/compute trade-off. It also says smaller GPUs can generate shorter sequences or use the small model. The 16 GB recommendation is not a universal VRAM minimum, and the documentation does not establish a general full-song vocal workflow. MusicGen documentation.
Stable Audio 3.0 Stability AI describes Small and Small-SFX as CPU-capable; Medium is a 1.4B-parameter CUDA model. Its open-weight release covers three variants; Large is accessed through API or enterprise self-hosting. Small variants are listed at 433M parameters. Medium uses CUDA and Flash Attention 2. The vendor reports 6.52 GB peak VRAM for a specific 380-second Medium track generated on an H200. The H200 figure is a vendor-reported case, not a general GPU requirement. The vendor says missing or misconfigured Flash Attention 2 can produce unusable output. Licensing and revenue conditions apply; see the vendor’s deployment and licensing explanation.
ACE Studio Desktop software for Windows and macOS with cloud rendering and Turbo Mode, which uses the computer’s compute. Official installation documentation lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later and macOS Ventura 13 or later, and recommends modern hardware. Its documentation says an internet connection is required, so it is not evidence of a fully offline workflow. Installation documentation.

These options are not a single performance ranking: they differ in output type, conditioning controls, hardware demands, software stack and network dependence. Their reported figures come from different sources and setups, so they should not be treated as results from a shared test.

Choose hardware for the model, not the other way around

Start by selecting the model and variant you want to run. Then check the current requirements for that exact combination. A GPU tier that works for one model does not establish that another model, longer generation, or higher-quality variant will fit.

Use ACE-Step’s GPU tiers as a rough guide

The ACE-Step musician guide groups example cards into tiers: GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB as “Entry”; GTX 1660 or RTX 2060 6 GB as “Budget”; RTX 3060 or 4060 8 GB as “Mainstream”; RTX 3070 or 4070 8–12 GB as “Mainstream-Sweet spot”; 16 GB examples as “Enthusiast”; and RTX 3090 or 4090 24 GB as “High end / Pro.” These are the guide’s categories, not a neutral benchmark or a guarantee that every model variant will fit.

The same guide estimates about 100 GB of free disk space and around 60 GB for automatically downloaded model files in its described setup. Treat those figures as guidance for that installation, not a universal size for local music generation. Check the guide’s current requirements before downloading.

Account for different model workloads

MusicGen’s recommendation of 16 GB of memory concerns its best quality/compute trade-off for medium and melody; the documentation also allows shorter sequences or the small model on smaller GPUs. Do not interpret it as a general 16 GB VRAM floor for every MusicGen use.

Stability AI describes Stable Audio 3.0 Small and Small-SFX as CPU-capable, while Medium is CUDA-based and depends on Flash Attention 2 in the described setup. A CPU-capable option can reduce dependence on a powerful GPU, but it does not make every model or configuration interchangeable.

Consider the runtime as well as the graphics card

ACE-Step’s paper reports generation in under 2 seconds per full song on an A100 and under 10 seconds on an RTX 3090. These are the paper authors’ reported results, not independent measurements of every desktop configuration; they should not be compared directly with figures from other projects or vendors. Read the ACE-Step 1.5 paper for context.

There is also a documented AMD route: AMD describes using ACE-Step 1.5 through ComfyUI and ROCm on supported Radeon and Ryzen AI platforms, with Adrenalin drivers and ComfyUI Desktop in its setup steps. The speed and quality claims are AMD’s; the available information does not establish equivalent independent benchmarks against NVIDIA systems. See AMD’s setup overview.

A practical installation and first-generation workflow

The exact clicks and dependencies depend on the application and its current release. Use the selected project’s own setup instructions rather than assuming one installation procedure applies to every model.

  1. Pick a generation goal. Decide whether you need full songs with vocals, shorter text-to-audio sequences, melody-conditioned output or sound effects. Use that choice to narrow the model options above.
  2. Check the current requirements. Verify supported operating system, GPU and backend, memory, model variant, runtime dependencies, and whether the intended mode needs an internet connection. For ACE-Step Studio, check the active release notes and supported NVIDIA cards in the repository.
  3. Make room before downloading. For the ACE-Step guide’s described setup, plan for about 100 GB free and around 60 GB of automatically downloaded models. Other routes have different sizes; use their current documentation.
  4. Install the model and interface or runtime. Follow the relevant project’s current instructions. If choosing Stable Audio Medium, pay particular attention to the Flash Attention 2 setup described by Stability AI; its vendor documentation warns that a missing or misconfigured installation can lead to unusable output.
  5. Confirm the processing route. Check whether generation is set to use the downloaded local model rather than a cloud/API mode. If offline use matters, verify the application’s documented network requirements and test the intended workflow without a connection only if the software supports that test.
  6. Generate a short test first. Use a simple prompt or supported conditioning input and a modest output length. Confirm that the model loads, the expected device is active, and the output is saved where you expect before starting a larger generation.
  7. Review the model and asset terms before publishing. Check the exact weights, fine-tunes, LoRAs, bundled components and output terms relevant to your intended use.

Check licenses before using generated music commercially

“Local” describes where processing happens; it does not by itself grant copyright clearance or commercial rights. Likewise, a model described as open-weight or open-source may still have conditions on use, redistribution, or particular bundled assets.

For Stable Audio 3.0, Stability AI says its Community License is free for organizations below $1 million in annual revenue, and says users own outputs under that license subject to its license and Acceptable Use Policy. The vendor distinguishes those terms from enterprise licensing and says indemnification attaches to its Enterprise license. These are the vendor’s summaries, not legal advice; review the actual terms linked from its licensing explanation before relying on them.

The ACE-Step Studio repository identifies MIT licensing for the studio, acestep.cpp, and ACE-Step 1.5/models, but lists some optional materials under other terms: Regrind fine-tune/VAE materials under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, MuScriptor weights under CC BY-NC 4.0, and catalog LoRAs under each author’s license. Verify the specific assets you load in the repository; do not assume every optional model or component shares the core project’s license.

What “local” does—and does not—promise

  • It can keep generation on your machine: when the software actually runs a local model and avoids cloud services, prompts and generated audio need not be sent to an API.
  • It does not guarantee offline operation: ACE Studio’s official installation documentation requires internet access and describes cloud rendering.
  • It does not settle rights: model, fine-tune and asset licenses may differ, and the terms governing outputs still matter.
  • It does not ensure a particular speed or quality: published timings and memory figures apply to their specified hardware and setup, not every workstation.
