This prevents buying gear that does not fit your space or solve a real task. There is no universal layout: OSHA notes that “There is no single ‘correct’ posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone.”
1. Plan the room and how you will use the setup
Before shopping, measure the space the workstation actually needs—not just the desk footprint. Include the chair’s movement area, legroom, outlets, and the computer or console. Note windows and overhead or task lighting, too: they affect where the display can go and whether glare will be a problem.
List the work you do and the games you play. That helps establish whether you need one display or more, how much room your keyboard and mouse require, and which devices must connect. Gaming performance requirements such as resolution and refresh rate depend on your games, computer or console, budget, and work applications; the ergonomics guidance here does not determine those hardware specifications.
Choose a device layout
- One computer for both: A shared PC or laptop can keep the setup simple. Confirm that it supports your work applications, games, display, and peripherals.
- Separate work and gaming devices: Allow space for both, and decide how you will switch the display, keyboard, mouse, and other USB devices between them.
- Laptop plus desktop or console: A dock or switching device may reduce reconnection steps, but only if its ports and capabilities match the devices you own.
For a dock or KVM, check the exact model’s supported display resolution and refresh rate, video and USB ports, charging capability, and operating-system compatibility. Compatibility is not guaranteed just because a device is labeled “dock” or “KVM.”

2. Choose a desk and chair that fit your body
Prioritize usable surface area, stable support, clear legroom, and enough room to position your keyboard and mouse independently of a laptop screen. Cable-routing features can make a multi-device desk tidier, but they are secondary to fit and working space. OSHA’s workstation guidance offers suggestions; not every ergonomic recommendation is a specific legal requirement.
Fit the chair first
A well-designed, properly adjusted chair supports your back, legs, buttocks, and arms, according to OSHA’s workstation component guidance. CDC/NIOSH describes an armrest-equipped office chair as ideal for home work. Adjust the chair so your feet rest flat and your hips and knees are at or slightly above 90 degrees. If your feet do not reach the floor comfortably, a box or book can serve as a temporary footrest.

When comparing chairs, start with adjustment range and whether the chair fits your body; then consider support and materials. Try a chair where feasible and review the return terms before buying. A gaming-style appearance does not establish that a chair will fit or support you well.
Consider desk height and adjustability
Check that the desk leaves room for your legs and allows your keyboard and mouse to sit where your shoulders can stay relaxed and your elbows near your body. An adjustable standing desk is an optional way to vary posture, not a requirement or a substitute for moving and taking breaks.

3. Position the monitor, keyboard, and mouse
Set the display for comfortable viewing
For a separate monitor, CDC/NIOSH recommends placing it about an arm’s length away, with the top of the screen at or below eye level. Adjust its position to suit your vision, tasks, and posture. A monitor stand or adjustable arm is useful if it helps you reach a comfortable height and position; neither is essential if the display is already placed well.
Reduce reflections by placing the screen perpendicular to windows or using blinds, as CDC/NIOSH recommends. When choosing a monitor, balance size and resolution against your viewing distance, work needs, available ports, adjustability, and the refresh rate your games and device can use. Check the specifications for your exact computer or console and display rather than assuming a particular spec is right for everyone.

Place input devices within easy reach
Position the keyboard and mouse so your wrists are close to straight, your elbows stay near your body, and your shoulders remain relaxed. Leave enough desk space to use the mouse without reaching or crowding the keyboard. If you work from a laptop, an external keyboard and mouse can be placed independently of its screen; choose them for compatibility and comfort.

Lighting, noise, temperature, airflow, and available space all shape the office environment. Arrange the desk to reduce screen glare, and use task lighting where needed without letting it shine into the display or your eyes. A decorative gaming light is optional; it does not replace comfortable screen placement or suitable room lighting.

Build in regular posture changes and breaks rather than staying in one position for long stretches. CDC/NIOSH says short breaks every hour have been shown to reduce discomfort among people working at computers. This is general workstation guidance, not a promise of a particular health outcome.
5. Add switching and cable accessories only if they help
Once the core setup works, add conveniences that solve a specific problem. A dock or KVM can simplify switching among devices if it supports the connections and display capabilities you need. Cable trays, ties, and clips can keep wiring orderly, but they are finishing accessories—not core ergonomic equipment. Keep cables arranged so they do not interfere with chair movement, legroom, or access to outlets.
