Yes, you can build a browser pipeline that detects a wake word and then recognizes a spoken command locally—but the wake-word detector and speech recognizer are separate components. Both must be configured to process audio on the device, and their required code and models must be available before you disconnect. Browser speech recognition is not offline by default: MDN says its default web-page route uses a server-based engine.
How the offline voice pipeline works
A full pipeline has distinct stages. A wake-word engine listens for a trigger phrase; after it fires, a speech-recognition engine turns the following utterance into text. Your application then maps that text to a limited set of commands and carries out the corresponding action.
- Get microphone access. The user grants permission for the page to capture audio.
- Listen locally for the wake phrase. A wake-word engine analyzes microphone input and signals when it detects the trigger. It does not transcribe the command.
- Recognize the command locally. Start a separate speech-recognition stage after the wake event and obtain a transcript.
- Match an allowed command. Compare the transcript against explicit command patterns rather than treating arbitrary speech as an instruction.
- Act and return to the wake state. Run the mapped action, then stop command recognition or resume wake-word listening.
“Offline” should describe the complete deployed experience, not just inference. Download the application code and model or language assets while connected, make them available locally or through a persistent cache, and then test with networking disabled. The cited documentation describes initial downloads and local processing options; it does not demonstrate that every deployment will work offline end to end.
Can browser speech recognition work offline?
Sometimes, if the browser implements an on-device mode and the required language pack has been installed. The default Web Speech recognition path should not be assumed to be local: MDN’s Web Speech API guide says that using speech recognition on a web page by default involves a server-based recognition engine.

MDN documents an on-device option that requires browser support, an explicit request for local processing, and an installed language pack for the target language. The pack is downloaded once per language; after installation, that language’s recognition functionality can be used offline. This does not make recognition offline before setup, nor does it make every browser’s SpeechRecognition implementation local.
Documented Edge development-channel path
Microsoft Learn’s SpeechRecognition instructions, checked October 5, 2026, describe a local recognition model in Edge Canary or Dev version 150.0.4076 or later. They require enabling a feature flag and list English (en-US), German (de-DE), Italian (it-IT), Portuguese (pt-PT), Spanish (es-ES), and Korean (ko-KR). Treat this as a documented development-channel implementation, not proof of universal or stable-channel support. Microsoft says of this local model: “The speech input into the model never leaves the device, and isn’t collected to train AI models.” That statement is scoped to the implementation Microsoft documents.

For this route, feature-detect the recognition API, check whether local recognition and the desired language are available, install the language pack while online, and explicitly request on-device processing before starting recognition. The exact API surface and support can change, so verify the current browser, operating system, language, permissions policy, and deployment setup you intend to support.
Choose a wake-word detector separately
Picovoice Porcupine documents a browser wake-word binding built with WebAssembly and Web Audio microphone input. It can provide the first stage of the pipeline, but its presence does not establish that command recognition is offline; you still need a local recognizer such as a supported browser on-device implementation or a separately bundled on-device engine.

The Porcupine web-binding documentation names Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. This is vendor documentation, not an independent compatibility test. The web SDK requires microphone permission and an AccessKey. Its worker-oriented setup uses IndexedDB; the documentation describes a main-thread alternative for browsers without IndexedDB. SharedArrayBuffer can enable multithreading when the appropriate response headers are present; without it, processing falls back to standard ArrayBuffers. Check requirements against the SDK version you deploy, including worker behavior and hosting headers.
Implementation and failure handling
Before writing command logic, decide which browsers, operating systems, and languages you will support. Then feature-detect each stage independently: a working wake-word library does not imply that the browser can recognize speech locally.

- Microphone permission denied: Do not start listening. Explain how to grant permission and let the user retry.
- Wake-word support unavailable: Provide a manual control to begin the interaction, or explain that the browser or device is unsupported.
- Recognition API absent or local mode unavailable: Do not silently fall back to server recognition if the promise is offline operation. Report that local recognition is unavailable and offer a non-voice alternative.
- Language pack missing: While online, offer the browser’s supported installation flow; otherwise explain that recognition for that language is not ready.
- Recognition error or no match: Return to the wake state or ask the user to try again, without executing an action on an incomplete or uncertain transcript.
- Potentially sensitive command: Require a narrow allowlist and confirmation for consequential actions. A transcript is not authorization.
Test the actual deployed page with networking disabled after setup. Verify that the app shell, worker files, wake-word model, and recognition language assets remain available; test microphone permission, the chosen language, and recovery from errors. A local inference engine alone does not guarantee that the surrounding application can load or function offline.

The cited sources do not provide directly comparable accuracy, latency, memory, or download-size benchmarks for these choices, so there is no evidence-based numeric ranking here. Evaluate those properties on the devices, languages, and acoustic conditions that matter to your users.

Privacy and offline boundaries
Local recognition can keep command audio on the device when the chosen engine truly processes it there, but a page is only as private and offline as its full implementation. Confirm the recognizer’s processing mode, keep model and application assets available without a network, and avoid a server fallback that contradicts the local-only promise. Explain clearly when setup requires an initial download and what happens if local support is missing.
