Build a full-funnel video strategy by starting with a business outcome and audience, then connecting awareness, consideration, and action campaigns to distinct creative, budgets, and measurement. The funnel is a planning model, not a fixed budget formula: the right mix depends on your goals, audience, creative, industry, and the measurement available on each platform.
What a full-funnel video strategy means
A full-funnel plan uses video at multiple points in the customer journey instead of treating a conversion campaign as the entire video strategy. Its three common jobs are to make a brand or offer visible, encourage people to learn more or consider it, and prompt people with stronger intent to take a measurable next step.
Google describes this approach for YouTube as combining awareness or reach-based campaigns, brand or purchase consideration and view-based campaigns, and action, click, or conversion-based campaigns. Its Reach Planner brings those objectives into one planning view. This is Google’s platform-specific framework, not a universal prescription for every video platform. Google Ads Help: About full funnel in Reach Planner.
Start with the business outcome and audience
Before choosing a format, write down the business problem the campaign should address. An unfamiliar product may need an introduction; a known offer may need to improve consideration among a priority audience; an established source of demand may call for a direct route to purchase or another action.

- Outcome: State what should change, such as awareness, consideration, or completed actions.
- Audience: Identify who needs to see the message and what you know about their relationship to the brand or offer.
- Meaningful result: Choose the outcome that would count as progress before selecting campaign settings.
There is no audience-segmentation formula or budget split that fits every advertiser. The practical goal is to connect the audience’s likely state to the job the campaign is expected to do.
Map campaign roles and measures to the funnel
Use each stage to define a distinct job, a suitable campaign objective, and a primary KPI. Google’s format and measurement examples are useful when planning YouTube, but names, settings, and availability should be checked for the platform and account you use.
| Stage | Strategic job | YouTube examples in Google guidance | Measures to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awareness / reach | Make the brand or offer visible to relevant people and build future demand. | Awareness- or reach-oriented campaigns, including Video Reach Campaigns. | Unique reach, frequency, CPM, brand awareness lift, ad recall, watch time, completion, and connected-TV delivery where relevant. |
| Consideration | Give interested people a reason to learn more, remember, or consider the offer. | Brand- or purchase-consideration and view-oriented campaigns, including Video View Campaigns. | Views, consideration lift, Search Lift, and earned actions where available. |
| Action | Prompt people with stronger intent to take a measurable next step. | Action-, click-, or conversion-oriented formats. | Clicks and conversions tied to a defined action, measured with attribution or conversion methods suited to the setup. |
Choose a primary KPI that matches the campaign’s job; keep secondary indicators separate. Reach and frequency describe exposure, views describe viewing behavior, lift studies estimate changes in specified outcomes, and conversion reporting tracks defined actions. They answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable measures of success. Google’s awareness and consideration video campaign guidance describes objective-specific formats and measures.
Choose a budget role, not a universal funnel split
Google’s Reach Planner describes two planning patterns. In “conversion creation,” more budget goes to action formats while awareness and consideration formats help reach new customers and build future conversions. In “conversion capture,” more budget goes to awareness formats while action and consideration formats help capture people already interested. These are platform planning examples, not proven default allocations or guaranteed outcomes.

When comparing mixes, consider the objective, audience state, buying or optimization basis, creative fit, measurement access, and intended budget role together. Google’s planning language includes reach/CPM, views/CPV, and action/CPA where current campaign options support them; verify the available names and buying settings at setup. The right balance depends on whether the business needs to create future demand, capture existing interest, or do both.
Brief creative for the audience’s next step
Creative should fit what viewers need at that stage. Someone encountering the brand for the first time needs a clear introduction. Someone evaluating an offer needs a useful reason to remember or consider it. Someone ready to act needs an obvious next step.
Google’s ABCD guidance organizes creative principles by marketing objective. Its YouTube production guide recommends early audio and brand cues, mobile-conscious framing, showing the product or service in use, varied footage, and calls to action. These are Google’s recommendations, not independent proof that a particular execution will cause better performance. See About the ABCDs of effective video ads and Google’s Production Guide for Effective Ads on YouTube.
- Make the opening establish the message and brand early enough to be noticed.
- Frame for mobile viewing and show the product or service in use when it helps explain the offer.
- Match the call to action to the campaign objective rather than asking every viewer for the same commitment.
- Adapt format and footage to placement and device, then review format-level reporting where supported.
Set measurement before launch
Decide what evidence you need before buying media. For reach objectives, consider reach, frequency, and CPM. For consideration, views and consideration signals may be relevant. For action, define the conversion event and use attribution or conversion measurement appropriate to the setup.

Do not judge awareness activity solely by last-click sales. Google describes Brand Lift, Search Lift, and Conversion Lift as different ways to assess impact, and says they can be run on the same campaign. A lift study addresses a different question from attributed conversions; neither makes causal impact or business return automatic. Interpret results in light of each measure’s study design. See Google’s guidance on attribution and lift measurement.
Access and eligibility can affect the plan. Google’s January 2026 awareness and consideration guidance says Brand Lift and Search Lift may require a Google account representative and recommends meeting the relevant market’s budget minimums before starting a study. Confirm current access, market eligibility, and requirements with Google when setting up a campaign; availability can change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review evidence and adjust the mix
Assess each campaign against its assigned role rather than comparing unlike KPIs as if they measured the same thing. Review reach and frequency efficiency for awareness, viewing and consideration signals for the middle of the journey, and completed actions for conversion-focused activity.
Use attribution paths to see how activity may appear alongside conversions, and use lift evidence where available to assess changes in the outcomes measured by a study. An attributed assist is not, by itself, proof that the ad caused the conversion. Google’s awareness guidance also points to attribution reports for paths to conversion and cross-media reach measurement for deduplicated reach and frequency across YouTube and TV.
Production considerations for in-house teams
If you are producing ads yourself, plan the location, shots, lighting, and sound before filming. YouTube’s filming guidance also advises avoiding identifiable personal information in a home filming setup. Equipment should follow the creative style and production goals; YouTube lists a wireless lavalier microphone as one option for recording a speaker from farther away. Gear can support production, but it does not determine advertising effectiveness. See YouTube video equipment tips and YouTube filming tips.
