Here, “from scratch” means building the aircraft from separately selected components—not manufacturing every electronic part or writing flight-control software. This guide focuses on a 5-inch FPV-style quadcopter as an example; other uses and aircraft designs may need different parts.
Decide what you want the drone to do
Choose the use before shopping. A 5-inch FPV quadcopter is one possible starting point, not a universal design for racing, freestyle, aerial photography, or autonomous flight. Intended use affects the frame, motors, propellers, battery, payload, radio system, and any legal requirements that apply.
Building can make it easier to customize a drone and understand how to repair it. It is not necessarily cheaper than buying a ready-made aircraft: the cited guide says building is generally not the lower-cost option, but provides no itemized comparison. Consider the full build and your assembly and configuration experience rather than assuming a savings.
Parts you need for a basic quadcopter
A quadcopter needs a frame, four motors, an electronic speed controller (ESC), a flight controller, propellers, a battery, a radio receiver, and a compatible transmitter. The receiver and transmitter must communicate using a supported, matching protocol.

| Part | Role | Example in the cited 5-inch guide |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | Holds the components and establishes their layout. | Carbon-fiber X-frame sized for 5-inch propellers. |
| Motors | Spin the propellers to control lift and movement. | Four brushless 2207 or 2306 motors; the guide gives 1700–2450 KV depending on battery. |
| ESC | Drives the motors in response to flight-controller commands. | 4-in-1 ESC rated 45 A or higher. |
| Flight controller | Runs the flight-control firmware and processes receiver and sensor inputs. | Betaflight-compatible F7 flight controller. |
| Propellers | Convert motor rotation into thrust. | 5-inch tri-blade propellers: two clockwise and two counterclockwise. |
| Battery | Powers the aircraft. | 4S or 6S LiPo; the guide suggests 1300–1500 mAh. |
| Radio link | Transmits pilot commands to the aircraft. | ExpressLRS or Crossfire receiver and a transmitter using the matching protocol. |
| Battery connector | Connects the battery to the power leads. | XT60 or XT30, as listed in the guide. |
These are examples from Digital Citizen’s guide, not an independently tested parts combination. Do not treat the values as a guaranteed compatible shopping list. Before buying, check the exact motor, propeller, battery, and ESC specifications against their manufacturers’ documentation, along with physical fit, mounting patterns, voltage and current ratings, firmware support, and radio protocol.
Optional equipment
- FPV camera, video transmitter, and antenna: add a live video link for first-person-view flying.
- GPS module: provides positioning features when supported and configured by the flight controller and firmware.
- Buzzer: can help locate the aircraft, depending on its setup.
- Assembly supplies: heat-shrink tubing for insulating exposed joints and a smoke stopper for cautious first power-up are among the items the guide recommends.
How to assemble and wire the quadcopter
Use the component manufacturers’ instructions and a firmware-specific setup guide alongside this overview. The cited build guide gives a high-level sequence, not detailed wiring diagrams or a verified combination of parts. A pre-designed frame is the simpler starting point; a custom frame adds CAD and fabrication work.

- Assemble the frame. Fit the arms and plates according to the frame maker’s instructions, leaving access to the electronics stack and wiring.
- Mount the motors and ESC. Attach one motor to each arm. Solder the motor wires to the ESC motor pads, following the ESC documentation. Motor direction can be configured later.
- Wire the battery connector. Solder the connector to the ESC power pads. Check positive and negative polarity before connecting any battery, then insulate exposed joints with heat-shrink tubing. A polarity error can damage electronics.
- Mount the flight controller. Use the supplied soft grommets where applicable and align the controller’s indicated forward direction with the frame. Connect the ESC signal wiring to the correct motor outputs, using the board documentation.
- Connect the receiver. Wire it to a UART supported by the flight controller and receiver protocol. Configure the corresponding serial receiver setting in the firmware and bind the receiver to a transmitter with a compatible protocol.
- Set up firmware and controls. Configure the flight controller, calibrate the accelerometer on a level surface, check the receiver input, verify motor order and direction, and assign arming and flight-mode switches.
- Test without propellers. Keep all propellers off during bench testing. The guide recommends a smoke stopper for first power-up. Check the controls, motor mapping, and configuration before fitting the propellers.
Bench checks before the first flight
Do not move from assembly straight to flight. With propellers removed, confirm that the flight controller recognizes its orientation, receiver inputs respond correctly, and each motor output corresponds to the intended motor and direction. Check that the arming control works as configured. If something behaves unexpectedly, disconnect power and consult the component and firmware documentation rather than troubleshooting with propellers installed.
- Inspect solder joints and confirm battery polarity before connecting power.
- Check that the flight-controller orientation shown in software matches the frame.
- Verify receiver binding, channel inputs, and the configured arming and flight-mode switches.
- Confirm motor order and direction with propellers removed.
- Fit propellers only after these checks are complete, and install each propeller in the correct orientation for its motor.
For LiPo charging, storage, and handling, follow the battery manufacturer’s safety instructions; the cited build guide does not provide battery-specific handling guidance.

Check the rules where you will fly
Drone rules depend on location and purpose. The U.S. and European Union examples below are not a substitute for checking current requirements in your country, local area, and airspace.
United States
The Federal Aviation Administration’s Recreational Flyers & Community-Based Organizations guidance, last updated March 18, 2026, says recreational flyers must pass TRUST and carry proof, maintain visual line of sight (or use a co-located visual observer in direct communication), give way to other aircraft, and observe altitude and controlled-airspace requirements. Recreational registration is required for drones weighing 250 g (0.55 lb) or more. When registration is required, Remote ID applies unless an exception, such as operation within a FRIA, applies. The FAA states that the recreational altitude ceiling in Class G airspace is 400 feet, subject to other applicable rules.

The FAA says most non-recreational flights by drones under 55 lb are regulated under Part 107; the purpose of the flight matters, not simply whether money changes hands. Its guidance puts it plainly: “When in doubt, assume Part 107.” Check the FAA’s current rules and airspace requirements before flying.
European Union
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s FAQ on privately built drones says a privately built drone may operate in the open category if it meets the applicable requirements. Its examples include A1 for an aircraft with maximum take-off mass (MTOM), including payload, below 250 g and a maximum speed below 19 m/s, or A3 for an aircraft with MTOM, including payload, below 25 kg. These are category conditions, not a complete account of EU or national requirements; consult the current rules that apply to your operation.

Is building a drone the right choice?
Choose a build when customization and learning to maintain the aircraft matter more to you than a ready-to-fly setup. Before committing, weigh the intended use, total mass and payload, component compatibility, repairability, assembly and configuration skills, and the rules that apply to your flights. The example parts above illustrate one 5-inch FPV-style approach; they do not establish a tested build, expected flight time, performance, or total cost.
