Build a language habit by making each session easy to start and useful while it lasts: recall something you have already studied, check your answer, then add a small amount of new material. Short daily sessions can make practice easier to repeat, but no evidence-backed number of minutes works for everyone—and a streak is not the same as learning.

Why short, spaced practice can help

Returning to material across separate sessions gives you opportunities to retrieve it after some time has passed, rather than encountering everything in one long block. A 2022 meta-analysis by Su Kyung Kim and Stuart Webb examined 98 effect sizes from 48 experiments involving 3,411 participants and found that spacing had a medium-to-large effect on second-language learning. On immediate tests, shorter spacing performed as well as longer spacing; on delayed tests, longer spacing did better. Equal and expanding spacing were statistically equivalent in the studies they analyzed. The results varied by factors including the learning target, number of sessions, practice type, feedback timing, and how long after practice learners were tested. Read the meta-analysis.

The practical lesson is to distribute practice across days and revisit earlier language, not to follow a supposedly perfect interval. The Australian Education Research Organisation describes spaced retrieval as recalling earlier learning after time has passed. Its language example progresses from vocabulary basics to modifiers and then to using previous learning in conversation; it emphasizes spacing without prescribing one interval for every learner. See the AERO guide to spaced practice.

What to do in a short session

Use a repeatable sequence that gives you both retrieval and new input. For example, choose a prompt from a previous lesson, try to produce the word or phrase from memory, check it, and use it in a sentence. Then study a manageable amount of new language and bring it back in a later session.

  1. Recall: Before opening notes or replaying a lesson, try to remember a few words, a phrase, or a grammar pattern from an earlier session.
  2. Check: Compare your attempt with a reliable answer, lesson, tutor, or other feedback source. Correct mistakes rather than simply moving on.
  3. Use it: Say or write a brief sentence with the material. If your goal is listening or speaking, include an activity that exercises those skills rather than relying only on vocabulary recognition.
  4. Add a little: Learn a small amount of new material, then schedule a future session in which you will try to retrieve it.

Blank cards or index cards can provide simple prompts: put a word, phrase, or cue on one side and its meaning or answer on the other. Attempt recall before turning the card over, then revisit it in a later session. The useful element is the attempt to remember—not buying a particular deck or using a specific app.

Make the habit easy to repeat

Choose a reliable cue

Attach practice to something that already happens regularly, such as after breakfast or before a usual commute. A consistent cue is a practical way to make starting easier; the cited learning studies do not test a particular cue or prove that one habit strategy works for everyone.

Start small, without treating minutes as a magic number

Pick a session length that fits your schedule and feels easy enough to begin. There is no universal, source-backed number of minutes per day, nor a guaranteed timeline for forming a habit. If the session repeatedly feels difficult to fit in, make it shorter or simplify the setup; expand it only if that remains sustainable and serves your goals.

Keep a reduced version for busy days

Decide in advance what the smallest useful session looks like—for example, trying to recall a handful of previously studied items and checking them. Treat this as a continuity aid, not a scientifically validated threshold. When you have more time, return to the fuller routine.

Choose materials that support your goal

A structured app, a course, a tutor, and self-directed materials can all be part of a learning plan. Compare them on what they actually let you do, rather than assuming one format is best for everyone.

  • Level and goal: Does the material match what you can currently understand, and does it address your reason for learning?
  • Recall and feedback: Does it ask you to produce or remember language, and help you identify errors?
  • Review and skills: Does it return to earlier material and offer the speaking, listening, reading, or writing practice you need?
  • Practical fit: Is its lesson length manageable, and are accessibility and cost acceptable?
  • Consistency: Is this a method you are likely to keep using?

An Oxford-archived systematic review of smart-device language-learning apps included 32 eligible studies; 25 reported unequivocally positive effects. The review also found that evidence was insufficient to establish that learners of all ages and proficiency levels benefit equally. That supports the possibility that apps help in studied contexts, not a claim that every app works or that one is best. Read the systematic review.

Track learning, not just activity

A streak or a tally of minutes can remind you to show up, but it does not show by itself whether you can understand, recall, or use the language. Occasionally check whether you can retrieve older words without prompts, understand a passage or recording, or produce a sentence that uses what you studied. Those checks give you more useful information about learning than completion alone.

One Duolingo-specific result illustrates why engagement figures need careful interpretation. In a 2016 paper, Burr Settles and Brendan Meeder reported that their half-life regression model reduced recall-prediction error by 45% or more versus several baselines and improved daily Duolingo student engagement by 12% in an operational user study. Those figures describe a model and study on that platform; the engagement result is not evidence of a universal app effect or general proficiency gains. Read the paper.
