Build a read-only dashboard by loading an initial snapshot from a public REST API, then using an exchange WebSocket feed for live updates. Start with one venue and a small watchlist. Show the exchange, trading pair, quote currency, and time of the latest observation beside every price; add rate-limit handling, reconnects, and stale-data warnings before expanding the dashboard. Public market data can be available without account credentials, but “free” does not mean unlimited, and provider limits and terms vary.
Choose an exchange feed or an aggregator
An exchange feed reports data from that exchange: a ticker, trade, or order book for a particular product such as a trading pair. It is a practical starting point when you want prices for a limited watchlist and can use that venue’s available pairs and quote currencies.
Use public market-data endpoints for a read-only display. Binance documents a market-data-only Spot REST base endpoint at https://data-api.binance.vision. Confirm the requirements for the specific endpoint and product you choose; public data access does not require putting trading or account credentials in a browser.

But do not assume its access is free, that its data may be redistributed, or that its free tier meets your needs. Verify current signup requirements, quotas, licensing, attribution, caching, and redistribution terms in the vendor’s own plan and legal documents before relying on it, especially for a public or commercial dashboard.

Decide what the screen actually needs
- Prices from one venue: begin with that venue’s public market-data API and a small watchlist.
- Live trades or order-book changes: check the venue’s WebSocket channels and product coverage.
- Historical charts: identify a suitable historical endpoint and its limits separately from live-feed limits.
- Cross-market rankings or normalized data: assess an aggregator’s coverage and terms, and document how it combines sources.
Compare candidates by supported assets and quote pairs, snapshot and historical coverage, update cadence, rate limits, WebSocket subscription rules, geography, and usage rights. No provider is universally best for every pair, region, or dashboard.
Use REST for snapshots and WebSockets for live updates
REST uses request-and-response HTTP calls. Use it to load an initial view, refresh occasionally, or fetch historical data and fill gaps. A WebSocket feed pushes updates over a persistent connection, making it better suited to ongoing changes when the display needs lower latency. Binance’s developer documentation describes both models and lists dashboards, analytics, and reporting among relevant uses.

Coinbase Exchange’s WebSocket documentation describes ticker updates based on matched bids and offers, a ticker-batch channel that sends changed values every five seconds, and level2 order-book updates. Its heartbeat channel updates once a second for supported products. These are channel-specific behaviors, not a promise that every product or field updates at that cadence.
For real-time information, Coinbase’s API FAQ recommends trade and book endpoints together with the WebSocket feed, and cautions against frequent polling of historical rates. Treat its legacy Coinbase Pro terminology and REST figures as potentially stale; check current Exchange documentation for the product you intend to use.

Keep the first version small
- Select one venue and a short watchlist. Confirm that it supports the exact products, quote currencies, and geography your users need.
- Load a snapshot with REST. Retrieve the initial values and any historical data needed for the page. Avoid polling every widget independently when a shared fetch or cache can serve it.
- Open a WebSocket for ongoing updates. Subscribe only to the products and channels shown on screen. Reuse and manage connections where possible rather than opening one connection per widget.
- Merge updates into the snapshot. Keep the source and timestamps with each observation so a live update cannot silently lose its context.
- Define what happens on a disconnect. Mark the feed disconnected or stale, retry with bounded backoff, and refresh a snapshot after reconnecting if needed to restore a trustworthy current view.
Label prices so users know what they mean
A price is not self-explanatory. A BTC price quoted in USD on one exchange describes that venue’s market and quote currency; it is not automatically the same as a BTC price quoted in USDT elsewhere, nor a universal market price. Exchange feeds are venue-specific, and the provider documentation does not establish one universal formula for combining them.
Keep an internal observation record with enough information to identify its source and freshness:

- Venue and raw provider product or pair symbol.
- Base asset and quote asset, such as BTC and USD.
- Value and the channel or endpoint that supplied it.
- Event or update timestamp supplied by the provider, when available.
- Receive or fetch timestamp recorded by your application.
Retain the raw provider symbol alongside any normalized pair name. This makes it easier to diagnose mapping errors and prevents two similarly named products from being merged accidentally. If you show a composite across venues, expose the component sources and explain the calculation rather than presenting it as a venue quote.
Normalize time units explicitly. Binance Spot REST documentation says JSON time and timestamp fields use milliseconds by default, with an optional header for microseconds. Record your internal unit consistently and convert provider values at the boundary; otherwise, a timestamp can look valid while representing the wrong date or precision.

Plan for rate limits, errors, and stale data
Public APIs still have limits. They can vary by endpoint, IP, account, subscription, and product, and providers can change them. Read the current rules for each API you ship, not just a general “free API” page. The following examples apply only to the documented services and policies shown:
| Provider and interface | Documented constraint | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Binance Spot REST | Request weights are endpoint-specific and limits are IP-based. Excessive calls can return HTTP 429; repeated failure to back off can lead to an HTTP 418 IP ban. Exact weights and current limits should be checked in the live exchange information and response headers. | Budget requests by weight, inspect headers where available, and slow down after a 429 rather than immediately retrying. |
| Kraken public Spot REST | Kraken’s rate-limit article, updated October 1, 2026, says one call per second or less remains within limits. Rules differ by endpoint and pair; Trades and OHLC limits also apply by pair. | Use this as a limit for the stated public Spot REST guidance, not as a rule for every Kraken API or other provider. |
| Coinbase Exchange WebSocket | Its connection policy, effective June 24, 2024, states a default of ten subscriptions per product/channel, a subscription-request rate of 10 requests per second, and a burst of 1,000 requests. | Subscribe only to needed products and channels, and verify the current policy before depending on these figures. |
Binance’s documented REST limits are endpoint-specific, so there is no single request count in this comparison that can safely stand in for every call. Coinbase’s subscription limits are WebSocket policy figures, not ordinary REST limits. For each provider, recheck the current product documentation before release.
Make failures visible and bounded
- Throttle requests: schedule calls per provider and endpoint; cache recent responses when their age is acceptable for the display.
- Back off on errors: honor any retry timing supplied by the service and use bounded or exponential delays. Do not retry a rate-limited request in a tight loop.
- Recover persistent feeds: detect disconnects, reconnect with backoff, and restore only the subscriptions the dashboard needs.
- Track health: record provider errors, connection state, and the last successful update.
- Show freshness in the interface: display the age of the latest observation or a clear stale/disconnected status. Do not leave an old value styled as live.
These safeguards follow the reliability guidance in Binance’s developer documentation, which calls for retry and backoff behavior, connection-health and reconnection handling, and API error monitoring.

Keep private credentials out of the browser
A market display does not need permission to place orders or read a user’s private account. Use public endpoints for public market data when the exchange documents them, and do not put exchange secrets in browser code. If you later add private account information or trading, route authenticated requests through a server-side service, restrict credentials to the minimum permissions required, and protect them as secrets. Binance distinguishes public market data from private authenticated operations and advises careful credential protection.
Use this launch checklist
- One venue, a defined watchlist, and a read-only first release.
- REST for initial snapshots and appropriate historical/backfill needs; WebSocket for ongoing updates when required.
- Visible venue, pair, quote currency, and observation freshness for every displayed value.
- Explicit timestamp-unit conversion and retained raw provider symbols.
- Per-provider rate scheduling, caching where suitable, backoff, reconnects, and error monitoring.
- Current checks of geographic availability, API limits, and any attribution, caching, or redistribution terms.
- No account or trading credentials exposed to the browser.
Binance’s developer documentation advises, “Always review the relevant product documentation before deploying systems at scale.” That is particularly important for API limits and feed policies: the examples above are service-specific, and the rules can change.
