Build around the cash you need, when you need it—not a guess about whether long-term Treasury yields have peaked. Set your spending horizon and tolerance for interim price changes first; then choose maturities and decide whether individual bonds, a fund, or a mix fits the job.
Start with the job the bond allocation must do
A bond portfolio can provide scheduled cash, liquidity, income, or diversification. Those goals are not interchangeable: money earmarked for a known expense needs a different maturity plan from money held as part of a long-term investment portfolio.
Map spending dates before choosing maturities
List expected withdrawals and their approximate dates. Separate money needed soon from capital that can remain invested through market swings. The SEC’s Investor.gov guide to asset allocation says a suitable mix depends on the goal, time horizon, and the amount of risk an investor can tolerate while pursuing it. There is no universally correct bond percentage or ladder length without those details.
For long-term goals, a bond-heavy allocation may also leave too little growth potential. Conversely, reaching for higher yields does not make a bond suitable for a near-term obligation.

Decide how much market-value movement you can withstand
Price risk and credit risk are different. A fixed-rate bond’s market value can fall when market yields rise, even if its issuer remains able to pay. A corporate or municipal bond also carries the risk that its issuer may fail to make promised payments. U.S. Treasury securities are backed by the U.S. government, but they still carry interest-rate and inflation risk; liquidity can vary among securities.
If you sell a bond before it matures, you may receive more or less than its face value. Holding to maturity avoids realizing an interim market-price change only if the issuer repays as promised. It does not erase the effects of inflation or the opportunity cost of being locked into a rate while other investments offer different returns.
Choose maturity exposure that matches the cash need
Longer-duration bonds generally react more to a given change in market yields than shorter-duration bonds. That is why a bond’s coupon or quoted yield alone cannot show how much its price may move. Consider maturity and duration alongside cash-flow fit, credit quality, liquidity, fees and transaction costs, tax treatment, diversification, and whether you can hold an individual security through maturity.

Know what each Treasury type does
| Treasury security | Maturity range listed by TreasuryDirect | Cash-flow or inflation feature |
|---|---|---|
| Bills | One year or less | Sold at par or at a discount and mature at face value. |
| Notes | 2, 3, 5, 7, or 10 years | Pay interest every six months. |
| Bonds | 20 or 30 years | Pay interest every six months. |
| Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) | 5, 10, or 30 years | Principal adjusts with changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI); the coupon rate is fixed, but the payment amount changes with adjusted principal. |
TIPS principal can adjust with deflation as well as inflation. They are not simply nominal Treasuries with a different label: their principal adjustment changes the basis on which coupon payments are calculated.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a ladder to spread maturity and reinvestment dates
A Treasury ladder holds securities with staggered maturity dates. As each rung matures, you can spend the proceeds or reinvest them. This spreads reinvestment decisions across rate environments: if rates are higher when a rung matures, you can reinvest at then-prevailing rates; if rates are lower, other existing rungs may still reflect rates set earlier. The ladder offers flexibility and can help organize expected cash flows, but it does not guarantee better returns or prevent losses if you must sell early.
Set each rung’s maturity around a real spending need or the period you are prepared to keep that money invested. A ladder is a cash-flow structure, not a way to know in advance which maturity will perform best.

Choose between individual bonds and bond funds
Individual Treasuries can match known cash needs to maturity dates if you can hold them through maturity and accept their terms. A bond fund pools securities and may offer convenience and diversification, but a share does not promise a fixed principal payment on a date you choose. Its net asset value (NAV) and yield change as holdings and market rates change.
| Consideration | Individual bonds | Bond fund |
|---|---|---|
| Matching a known spending date | A maturity can be selected to align with a cash need, subject to the issuer repaying as promised. | A specific share does not promise a fixed principal amount on a chosen date. |
| Market value and yield | Market value can change before maturity; selling early may return more or less than face value. | NAV and yield vary as the portfolio and market rates change. |
| Management and diversification | You select and manage the securities yourself or with assistance. | A pooled portfolio can be more convenient and diversified, though a narrowly focused fund is not automatically diversified. |
| Costs and other checks | Compare transaction costs, liquidity, credit quality, tax treatment, and the ability to hold through maturity. | Compare fees, duration, credit quality, diversification, liquidity, and tax treatment. |
Do not treat a fund’s yield as a guaranteed total return. Yield is one measure of income relative to price; total return also reflects changes in market value and income received. Coupon, current yield, and yield to maturity are distinct measures, so compare like with like when assessing securities.

An Associated Press explainer published September 25, 2026, describes individual bonds held to maturity as one way to match a defined spending need, and funds as a more flexible route when needs are less precise. It also reports Morningstar research showing that, for the 10 years through December 2025, the typical taxable bond fund returned 3.0% while the typical investor return was 2.1%. That reported comparison is historical context, not a forecast or a guarantee about the effect of any one investor’s timing.

Keep diversification and rebalancing in the plan
Think about diversification across asset categories and, where relevant, across bond types and issuers. A portfolio concentrated in one issuer, sector, or narrow fund can have risks that a broad label such as “bonds” hides. Revisit the allocation when goals or spending needs change, and use a pre-set rebalancing rule rather than changing the portfolio solely in response to a dramatic yield move.
The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance frames allocation as a balance between the probability of meeting a goal and the risk an investor can tolerate. A security’s yield does not replace that decision, and higher-yielding debt can involve higher risk.
Do not make a rate forecast the strategy
Volatile yields can make it tempting to move repeatedly between short and long maturities. Instead, choose a strategic maturity range that fits your cash needs and risk tolerance, then decide in advance when and how you will rebalance. This gives you a repeatable process without requiring a call on the next yield peak.

For dated context, Kiplinger reported on October 1, 2026, that the 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.693% intraday and the 10-year yield exceeded 5.3%; the report described both as highs not seen since 2002. These are observations reported for that date, not October 7 live yields. Treasury yields can change quickly, so a rate figure should always be tied to its date and source.
