There is no one beginner squad that works across every tactical strategy game. Start with the game’s squad limit, role descriptions and mission objective, then choose complementary roles that fit its rules and your team’s plan. A lineup that works in one game may not translate to another.
Start with the game’s rules and the mission
Before choosing characters or classes, check the in-game tutorial or official manual for three things: how many squad members you can field, what each role does, and whether the mission imposes restrictions. Then read the objective. A squad built to hold a position may need different capabilities from one tasked with moving through an area or completing an objective under pressure.
Use the game’s own role descriptions to cover complementary needs rather than filling every slot with the same strength. The right mix depends on what the mission asks you to do and which capabilities the game rewards.
Choose roles that work together
Think about how each role contributes to the objective and how it fits the rest of the lineup. Useful comparison points include:

- Role: What job does the game assign this class, character or position?
- Objective fit: How does that job help with the current mission?
- Trade-offs: What actions, resources or constraints come with the role’s abilities?
- Team fit: Does the role complement what the rest of the squad can do?
These are questions to apply to the specific game, not a universal list of roles. For example, EA’s FC 25 FC IQ guide explains that player roles shape off-ball behavior and that squad building should balance players with the tactical system. Its advice concerns FC 25’s football positions and role system; it is not a template for a turn-based combat game.
Don’t mistake specialization for a requirement
If a game offers role familiarity, class specializations or similar bonuses, weigh them against how well the role fits the team. In its FC 25 guidance, EA says base roles remain viable and presents familiarity as a way to improve a tactic—not as a reason to ignore cohesion. The details apply to FC 25, but the decision is useful more broadly: a bonus is only valuable if it helps the lineup do its job.

Check action and movement constraints
Some tactical games make movement, attacks and abilities compete for the same turn resources. Before settling on a lineup, check what each character can do in a turn and whether using one ability limits another action. These mechanics can change which roles are useful together, but they are not shared by every game.
For instance, the unofficial Zero Company beginner’s guide describes movement, attacks and abilities as competing for action points. Treat that as an example for that game, not a general rule; confirm current mechanics in the game’s own documentation.

Adjust the squad after each mission
After a mission, use the game’s feedback and the specific problem you encountered to decide what to change. If the squad struggled to complete the objective, consider whether a different role mix or tactical fit would help. Change one choice at a time where possible, so you can tell which adjustment made a difference. This is a practical way to apply the principle that composition should suit the situation—not a tested build for a particular game.

Games use different squad sizes and role systems. EA’s Battlefield V squad guide recommends a mix of classes and combat roles and notes that battlefield situations differ. Its squad limit is up to four players, a Battlefield V detail—not a universal count. FC 25, by contrast, uses football positions and player roles. Without a named game, there is no reliable universal squad count or named set of roles to recommend.
