A 100Gbps AOI platform is a system designed to move an aggregate 100 gigabits per second at a defined point in its data path—not a guarantee that cameras, processing, storage, and networking will all sustain that rate end to end. Build it by first measuring the camera workload, then matching camera links and frame grabbers to a verified PCIe topology, allocating compute and output capacity, and validating the complete inspection pipeline under production conditions. No cited source establishes a workload-matched, sustained 100Gbps semiconductor-inspection benchmark, so a platform specification alone cannot prove the target.

What does “100Gbps” mean in an AOI system?

Specify where the target applies: camera-to-host ingest, host-to-network egress, storage writes, or a defined combination. These are separate stages. An interface rated for 100Gbps does not by itself establish that the application can receive, inspect, store, or forward 100Gbps of useful image data continuously.

Keep units clear when planning capacity: 100Gbps is 12.5GB/s before accounting for protocol overhead and other losses. A link’s nominal rate is not the same as usable image payload or sustained application throughput. Define whether your target is a peak, a sustained rate, or a requirement that must be met during bursts and downstream delays.

What workload must the platform handle?

Before selecting a server, document the production workload. Without these inputs, an exact CPU, GPU, memory, frame-grabber, or storage bill of materials is not supportable.

  • Camera count and interface; mono or color format; resolution or line width; bit depth; frame rate or line rate.
  • Whether images are packed or transmitted in a wider container, and the actual camera output rate, including bursts.
  • Triggering, synchronization, acquisition duty cycle, and the maximum acceptable inspection latency.
  • Inspection algorithms, including whether GPU-based processing or inference is required.
  • Whether data must be retained, sent over a network, or both; the retention period and expected output volume.
  • Required uptime, recovery behavior, physical installation constraints, and regional supply and support needs.

For area-scan cameras, an initial raw image-rate estimate is camera count × image width × image height × frames per second × bits per pixel. Divide by eight to express the result in bytes per second. For line-scan cameras, substitute line width and line rate for image dimensions and frame rate. Treat either estimate as a starting point: the transmitted format, camera protocol, acquisition behavior, and measured burst profile determine the actual traffic the host must accept.

Which camera links and frame grabbers fit the target?

Use CoaXPress as one candidate, not an assumed universal choice

The CoaXPress consortium’s current technical summary describes up to 12.5Gbps per coax cable, with four cables providing a 50Gbps aggregate interface rate and eight providing 100Gbps. These are published interface rates, not measured useful image payload. Microchip’s CXP v2.0 documentation also describes up to 12.5Gbps per connection and distinguishes stream, I/O, and control functions. CXP may suit a high-speed camera-to-host link, but the available evidence does not establish it as the right interface for every camera, distance, or installation.

Match the complete connection

Check camera, frame grabber or host, and cable together. JIIA’s registered-product list identifies products and supported versions; it does not establish that every cross-vendor combination has been tested together. Confirm the following before ordering:

  • CXP generation and supported camera and host functions. JIIA says CXP 2.1 adds GenICam GenDC support and improvements to high-speed uplink functions, including optical media support.
  • Number of camera channels and coax cables, connector type, cable assembly, cable length, and any flex requirements.
  • Camera output format, frame-grabber bandwidth, host driver, and compatibility with the intended acquisition software.
  • Whether the installed card, cable, and camera combination is supported for the required operating conditions.

Other camera interfaces may be preferable where camera availability, distance, optical connections, or existing equipment drive the design. Choose against the actual installation and supported products rather than assuming a single interface wins on nominal bandwidth.

How should the server PCIe topology be laid out?

Treat the host as a PCIe and integration problem, not just a chassis with enough slots. Draw a topology showing each frame grabber, GPU, network adapter, RAID or host-bus adapter, and NVMe device connected through CPU root complexes and any PCIe switches. Verify mechanical slot size and electrical lane width, bifurcation, switch oversubscription, socket crossings, and card cooling in the system and board documentation.

PCI-SIG’s current PCIe 5.0 FAQ states 32GT/s per lane and up to 128GB/s of effective raw bandwidth in each direction on an x32 link. That is a raw link figure, not end-to-end capture, storage, or application throughput. NVIDIA’s GPUDirect Storage guidance likewise emphasizes balancing device bandwidth with PCIe topology; direct paths and concurrency matter to delivered I/O.

ADLINK describes its ISB-W890 AOI platform as offering up to 128 PCIe lanes and 11 expansion slots, with support for as many as 11 frame grabbers or four GPUs and frame-grabber bandwidth categories from 1G to 50G. These are vendor-published specifications, not proof that every maximum can be combined in one configuration. Confirm lane routing, permitted combinations, thermal limits, and system-level restrictions for the exact build.

How do capture, inspection, and output budgets fit together?

Stage What it does What to size or verify
Camera links and frame grabbers Receive image streams from cameras. Aggregate camera rate and bursts; interface version; channel count; frame-grabber bandwidth; cable and connector requirements.
CPU, memory, and acquisition software Coordinate capture, move and buffer data, and run host-side work. Measured memory movement and buffering needs; CPU and memory requirements for the intended software and algorithms.
GPU compute, if required Run the selected image-processing or inference workload. Target workload, GPU memory needs, inspection latency, PCIe path, and practical card count. GPU capacity is not established by camera-link rate alone.
Network and storage Transfer results or image data, retain data, or both. Required sustained egress and write rates, retention policy, concurrent traffic, and behavior when downstream service slows.

An Advantech AOI server case study dated January 26, 2024, illustrates this division: two GPUs perform video or image analysis and AI inference, two frame grabbers handle in-line capture, and a SmartNIC with dual-port 100GbE handles network transfer. It is one vendor’s system example, not a universal bill of materials or an independent result at a measured 100Gbps AOI workload. A dual-port 100GbE adapter specification should not be read as proof of a single application flow sustaining 200Gbps.

How should buffering and overload behavior be designed?

There is no universal buffer size or storage design established for this workload. Size buffers against measured camera bursts and the longest expected service delays in acquisition, inspection, storage, and network transfer. Then define what the system does when a downstream stage cannot keep up.

  • Choose and document whether congestion causes acquisition to pause, data to be retried, frames to be dropped, or data to be held for later processing.
  • Set frame-loss and backpressure alarms, and make the relevant counters observable to operators.
  • Test recovery after a delayed or unavailable downstream stage rather than measuring only a steady, uncongested run.
  • Include production-representative duty cycles, temperatures, and simultaneous storage and network activity in sustained-operation tests.

How should a 100Gbps AOI build be validated?

Validate the intended application path, not just individual component specifications. Record negotiated camera-link rates and PCIe widths, then measure each major stage and the end-to-end inspection flow using representative cameras, image formats, algorithms, and output policies.

  1. Confirm camera configuration and measure aggregate ingest, including burst behavior.
  2. Verify negotiated PCIe widths and the actual paths through CPU root complexes and switches.
  3. Measure host-memory movement and the acquisition pipeline under the target camera load.
  4. Measure GPU processing and latency with the intended algorithms, if GPUs are used.
  5. Measure storage writes and network transfer with the production data-retention and egress workload enabled.
  6. Run for a production-representative interval; record sustained throughput, latency distribution, temperature or throttling, frame loss, and recovery behavior.

Do not claim the target is met from a link-rate calculation, expansion-slot count, vendor case study, or component feature list. The reviewed sources do not publish a workload-matched 100Gbps semiconductor AOI benchmark, validated frame-drop result, or defect-detection accuracy figure for this proposed system.

What should be compared when choosing platform options?

Compare candidate systems against the same workload and topology, not just the largest bandwidth number in a product brief.
