How much should I save for a PS5?
Use a current local listing to set your savings target. Sony’s revised RRPs took effect on April 2, 2026. The figures below are Sony’s recommended retail prices, not a guarantee of a retailer’s current offer or your final checkout total.

These regional prices come from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s March 27, 2026 announcement and became effective April 2, 2026. For other territories, Sony advises checking a local retailer or PlayStation Direct where available. Check your market’s current listing before setting or relying on a target.
How to build a realistic PlayStation budget
- Choose the model and edition. Decide which configuration you actually want before treating any listed price as your savings goal.
- Check a current local offer. Use a local retailer or PlayStation Direct where available. Record the price, currency, seller, and date so you know what your target is based on.
- Add costs that apply to your purchase. Include applicable tax and delivery, plus any game, extra controller, or other accessory you plan to buy. These costs vary by location, seller, and chosen purchase; there is no universal checkout total.
- Set a spending ceiling. Pick a maximum total you are comfortable with. If the offer is above it, keep saving or reconsider the configuration rather than relying on an assumed future discount.
- Recheck before buying. Refresh the listing close to purchase instead of relying on an older saved price.
What if the PlayStation price changes before I buy?
Sony’s price announcements show that RRPs can change and that changes can differ by market. In 2022, Sony raised RRPs in selected markets and explicitly said there would be no U.S. increase in that round. In 2026, it announced revised prices globally. These past decisions do not establish when another increase, discount, or sale will happen.

Keep your budget flexible: treat the current local listing as a point-in-time reference, and review it again before you spend. Sony’s 2026 price announcement explains the new RRPs and directs customers in other territories to local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available. Its 2022 notice is a reminder that regional pricing decisions have varied; neither notice predicts a future price schedule.
Should I wait or budget for the current price?
Budget for the price you can verify now if you are ready to buy; wait only if the current offer exceeds your ceiling or you are still deciding which model fits your needs. The available price history is not a reliable basis for timing a purchase: it does not tell you when a sale or further change will occur.

Do not mix historical launch prices into a current budget. Sony’s 2020 launch announcement listed U.S. launch RRPs of $399.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition and $499.99 for the PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. Those are launch-era figures, not current prices.

If you are choosing among models, compare the current local price, the edition you want, and the total planned spend after applicable tax, delivery, games, and accessories. Sony’s listed RRPs let you compare the official reference prices across the announced markets, but they do not establish a complete lifetime-cost comparison for an individual buyer. In particular, the lower listed RRP of the Digital Edition does not by itself prove it will cost less overall for you.
