Borrow the ebook in Libby first, then use the loan’s Read With… option to send an eligible title to Amazon and your Kindle. Kindle delivery works only with participating U.S. libraries and titles that support Kindle; you can also read the loan in Libby without a Kindle.
Before you start: check library and title eligibility
Libby’s Kindle option is available for U.S. libraries, and not every ebook supports Kindle delivery. Libby describes the scope as: “You can read most Libby books on a Kindle ereader (available in the U.S. only).” Check the title’s Read With options or filter for Kindle-readable titles in Libby before borrowing if Kindle is your preferred destination.
You’ll need access to your library’s Libby collection and an Amazon account for the delivery handoff. Find your library in Libby and sign in with your library card. Some libraries offer instant digital cards, but eligibility and sign-up rules are set by each library. The available titles and formats likewise depend on that library’s collection.
How to borrow and send a Libby book to Kindle
- Find your library and sign in. In Libby, search for your library, select it, and follow the prompts to add your library card.
- Find and borrow an eligible ebook. Search or browse the collection, open the title, and choose Borrow when it is available. If it is checked out, place a hold if the library offers that option. The loan confirmation screen may let you choose a different loan period, depending on the library’s settings.
- Open the loan in your Shelf. Go to Shelf, then Loans, and find the book you borrowed.
- Start the Kindle handoff. Tap Read With… and select Kindle. Libby will send you to Amazon. Sign in to the Amazon account associated with your Kindle if prompted.
- Confirm delivery at Amazon. Tap Get Library Book. The title should appear on devices associated with that Amazon account. If it does not show up on the Kindle you intended, use the delivery steps below.
Choose between Kindle delivery and reading in Libby

Troubleshoot a missing Kindle option or book
There is no Kindle option
- Confirm that the library is in the U.S.; Kindle delivery is not available for libraries outside the U.S.
- Open the title’s Read With options or use Libby’s Kindle-readable filter to confirm that this particular ebook supports Kindle.
- Check whether your Libby reading preference is set to Libby instead of Kindle.
- Consider whether you already downloaded another format, such as EPUB. Libby says downloading a different format can prevent Kindle delivery for that loan. You may need to borrow the title again to send it to Kindle.
The book is not on the intended Kindle after the Amazon handoff
- Open Amazon’s Your Books page.
- Find the title and open Deliver or remove from device.
- Select the Kindle you want to use, then save the change.
If the book still does not appear, follow Amazon’s Kindle troubleshooting guidance. Libby also points to deregistering and re-registering the Kindle as a possible next step.

Loan periods and returning a Kindle book early
Libby loans return automatically on their due dates. If you want to return a Kindle book before then, use Amazon or the Kindle e-reader; Libby’s early-return control does not apply to Kindle books.
