There is no single Android setting that blocks every text from a sender without a conventional phone number. The right option depends on what the sender looks like, which messaging app you use, and your carrier. In Google Messages, you can block a visible conversation, report suspected spam, or—when a supported business message offers it—unsubscribe. The Known and Unknown inbox filter only sorts messages; it does not block them.
First, identify what “no phone number” means
These sender types call for different responses:
- An alphanumeric sender: The sender name appears as letters or a brand name rather than digits. It may be a business sender; it is not the same as a hidden caller ID.
- A short code: A short numeric sender used by some businesses and services. It is still a sender identifier, even though it is not a regular phone number.
- A private or hidden number: This label is associated with calls. Google’s Phone app setting for unknown callers does not provide a text-message block.
- An unsaved sender: The text has a number, but that number is not in Contacts. “Unknown” in Google Messages refers to whether a sender is saved in Contacts, not whether a number exists.
If you are troubleshooting a particular phone, note which messaging app is handling the conversation. The steps below cover Google Messages; other apps and carrier tools may use different controls.
Block a visible conversation in Google Messages
- Open Google Messages.
- Touch and hold the conversation you want to stop.
- Tap Block and confirm.
To review or reverse a block, open your profile menu, choose Spam & blocked, select the conversation, and tap Unblock. Google notes that some steps require Android 7.0 or later; menu wording can vary with the app version. See Google’s instructions for blocking and reporting in Messages.
This targets the conversation you selected. It is not a guarantee against a campaign that changes sender identities or uses a format the app does not let you block.

Choose whether to report suspected spam
In Google Messages, reporting a conversation as spam also blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked. Reporting is optional: you can block without reporting.
Consider the privacy implications before reporting. Google says a report may send the sender’s number and the last 10 incoming messages, along with associated message and account metadata, to Google. It may also send a copy of the number and the most recent text to your mobile carrier. Details are in Google’s spam reporting guidance.

Use Known and Unknown to sort—not block—messages
In Google Messages, tap the search box to see filters, including Known and Unknown. The filter classifies senders according to whether they are saved in Contacts, which can make the inbox easier to inspect. It does not block all messages from people outside your contacts. Google describes the feature in its Messages inbox filtering guidance.
For a recognized business, look for Unsubscribe
Google Messages may show an Unsubscribe action on supported business conversations. Google documents it for RCS for Business in the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. For SMS or MMS, Google documents availability in the United States for short codes and alphanumeric senders. Availability depends on the message type and region; the action may not appear for other senders.

Choosing Unsubscribe sends STOP to the sender. Google notes that essential or requested messages may continue. Use this for a legitimate business sender you recognize; if a message is unexpected or looks suspicious, avoid replying and use blocking, spam reporting, or official carrier reporting instead. Do not confuse call blocking with text blocking
The Google Phone app’s Unknown setting blocks calls from private or unidentified numbers. Google explicitly says calls from numbers that are not saved in Contacts can still get through. This is a call control, not a universal setting for texts from numberless senders. See Google’s instructions for blocking calls.

When app controls are not enough, check carrier and FTC options
Carrier tools vary and may apply only to entered telephone numbers or messages the carrier identifies as suspected spam. Check your provider’s current instructions for your account and location:
- AT&T: Its guidance points Android users to Google Messages Protection & Safety or Text Protection and provides a way to report unwanted messages. See AT&T’s unwanted-text guidance.
- T-Mobile: Its guidance covers blocking and reporting and notes that reporting by itself does not stop a sender from sending messages. See T-Mobile’s blocking and reporting instructions.
- Verizon: Verizon says you can forward an unwanted text to 7726. Its account-level blocking tool applies to entered 10-digit numbers; the cited temporary block is limited to five numbers for up to 90 days. See Verizon’s blocking options.
The FTC also recommends checking your device’s filtering features and forwarding unwanted texts to 7726. To report a scam, use ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Its spam-text guidance explains these options. Follow the current directions for your carrier; availability and controls can change.

Pick the action that matches the sender
