To block a specific number on most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Phone > More options (⋮) > Settings > Block numbers, enter the number, and tap Add. You can also block a caller from Recents. Filtering unknown callers and identifying suspected spam are separate controls, so choose the one that matches the calls you want to stop.
Choose the right call-blocking option
| What you want to stop | Use this control | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Calls from one known number | Add the number to Block numbers, or block it from Recents. | This is the direct option for a particular caller. Samsung’s US guidance says blocked calls go to voicemail and messages are not received; behavior may differ by region. Samsung US guidance |
| Unknown, hidden, or unspecified callers | Turn on the unknown-caller control in call settings, if available. | This is a separate filter, and Samsung’s descriptions and labels vary. Check the wording on your phone. Samsung Canada guidance |
| Suspected spam calls | Use Smart Call or spam protection if your device and carrier support it. | Availability is not universal, and spam detection is not the same as blocking a specific number. Samsung US Smart Call guidance |
Block a specific number in the Phone app
Add a number manually
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Tap Block numbers.
- Enter the phone number and tap Add.
On some versions, the Block numbers screen also lets you choose a number from Recents, Messages, or Contacts instead of typing it. Samsung Canada documents these options.
Block someone from Recents
- In the Phone app, open Recents.
- Select the caller and open Details, if that option appears.
- Tap Block and confirm.
Some Galaxy interfaces instead show a menu after you tap the recent number; choose Block there. Samsung documents both presentations, so use the route that matches the screen you see. Samsung US instructions and Samsung’s Smart Call guidance.
Block a saved contact
From Phone > Settings > Block numbers, select the contact or number if your screen offers that option. Samsung also documents blocking through contact controls, but labels and placement can vary. If you cannot find a contact-level block command, use the Block numbers list to add the person’s number. Samsung Canada support

Block unknown callers or filter suspected spam
Unknown or hidden callers
In the Phone app, open More options > Settings and look for a setting such as Block calls from unknown numbers. Samsung describes this control as targeting numbers not saved in contacts or not identified by Smart Call; other Samsung pages use terms such as “unknown/private” or “unknown/unspecified.” The exact wording and behavior depend on the software and region. It is not a promise that every unwanted call or caller-ID spoof will be blocked. Samsung Canada and Samsung US
Smart Call and spam protection
Smart Call can identify or filter suspected spam, but it is separate from adding a known caller to your block list. Samsung says Smart Call may not be available on every carrier or model. If the feature is missing, check whether your carrier and device support it. Samsung US Smart Call support

Unblock a number or review your block list

- Find the number you want to allow again.
- Tap the minus or remove control beside it. Samsung’s US instructions show a red Minus icon; your phone may use a different icon or label.

What happens to calls, texts, and voicemail?
Samsung’s US support page says calls from a blocked number are sent directly to voicemail and messages are not received. Samsung Hong Kong describes blocked calls and text messages as no longer being received on the phone. Because Samsung’s regional guidance is not worded identically, treat this as device and region-dependent behavior rather than a universal guarantee. Samsung US; Samsung Hong Kong

Blocking a number in the handset’s Phone app does not necessarily stop that caller from leaving carrier voicemail. Samsung advises contacting your carrier if you want to prevent voicemail from a specific caller. Samsung US Smart Call guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why your Samsung menu may look different
- Software and carrier: Menu names and screens can vary by wireless provider and software version. Samsung Canada’s call-settings guide, last updated August 29, 2026, gives this qualification.
- Purchase region: Samsung Hong Kong says its instructions apply to Hong Kong products and that models, sequences, and settings vary by location or purchase region. Samsung Hong Kong support, last updated February 4, 2026.
- Call screening: This is a separate, newer feature—not a prerequisite for blocking a number. Samsung’s current US support page limits it to Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. Samsung US Call screening support
If a label in these steps is absent, look for the equivalent option under Phone settings, or use the Recents route. For carrier-dependent features such as Smart Call or voicemail handling, check with your carrier as well as Samsung support.
