To become a NASA flight director, you must be a U.S. citizen, hold a bachelor’s degree in an eligible field, and have substantial related professional experience that shows progressively greater responsibility and time-critical decision-making in high-stress, high-risk situations. Previous NASA flight-controller experience is not required. NASA lists October 12, 2026, as the closing date for its current application; verify the live USAJOBS announcement before applying.
What a NASA flight director does
Flight directors lead the teams responsible for real-time mission execution and risk management. That work brings together flight controllers, astronauts, commercial partners, and international partners. Before a mission, flight directors also work with engineering, safety, and program teams to align operational plans with spacecraft capabilities and mission objectives.
NASA says flight directors lead human spaceflight missions to the International Space Station and Artemis missions. Human missions to Mars are an eventual objective, not a current assignment guarantee. NASA Chief Flight Director Emily Nelson described the role as integrating diverse teams into a unified mission effort.
What qualifications does NASA require?
U.S. citizenship and a relevant bachelor’s degree
NASA’s flight director FAQ says applicants must be U.S. citizens and have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in one of these fields:

Substantial, progressively responsible experience
NASA also requires substantial related professional experience, including time-critical decision-making in high-stress, high-risk environments. The FAQ does not set a minimum number of years, so there is no supported year threshold to use as a substitute for the vacancy’s actual criteria.
In your application, make the relevance of your work concrete: explain the decisions you owned, the operational or technical risks involved, how your responsibility grew, and how you coordinated people or teams. The live vacancy announcement determines how NASA evaluates specialized experience.

Is flight-controller experience required?
No. NASA says many flight directors previously worked as flight controllers, but that background is not a prerequisite to apply. Applicants with other technical or operational experience should clearly connect their responsibilities to NASA’s stated requirements; NASA does not guarantee that any particular background will be treated as equivalent.
How to apply for the current opening
- Check the vacancy. Read NASA’s flight director FAQ, then open announcement 886788000 on USAJOBS. NASA lists Monday, October 12, 2026, as the closing date. Confirm the listing is still open and follow its controlling instructions.
- Prepare your USAJOBS application. Use or create a USAJOBS account and tailor your resume to the specialized experience in the announcement. NASA’s general federal application guidance says USAJOBS resumes must be no more than two pages; review the vacancy for any additional requirements.
- Submit through the vacancy’s application flow. Complete all requested information and any additional instructions shown for this specific opening. The live announcement—not general application advice—sets what must be submitted.
- Watch for next steps. After the announcement closes, NASA reviews eligibility and qualifications. Applicants whose resumes are forwarded may be contacted for an interview. NASA’s general guidance says interviews may be panel-based, in person, by phone, or virtual.
The application window is time-sensitive: do not assume it remains open after October 12, 2026. Check the live listing before taking action.

What happens after selection?
Selected candidates train at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. NASA describes comprehensive instruction in spacecraft systems, extensive simulations, operational and leadership assignments, and mentoring from senior flight directors. The FAQ says initial certification can take up to 16 months; flight directors continue learning throughout their careers.
NASA’s account of its 2022 class also describes training in spacecraft systems, flight control, operational leadership, and risk management. That release offers context about training, not a guarantee that a future class will follow the same exact program or duration.

What NASA does not specify
- A minimum experience duration: NASA’s FAQ says “substantial” related experience but gives no year count.
- An acceptance rate: the cited NASA guidance does not publish one.
- A guaranteed career ladder: NASA describes flight-controller experience as common, not mandatory, and does not promise a particular route to selection.
For an individual applicant, the practical test is whether their education and documented experience meet the current vacancy’s criteria—not whether they followed one prescribed career path.
