Back up your iPhone before installing beta software, then confirm the backup completed and keep that pre-beta copy available. You can use iCloud or a computer. The precaution matters because Apple says a backup made while the iPhone is running beta software may not work with an earlier public iOS release.
Why you need a pre-beta backup
If you later want to return to public iOS, Apple’s documented process requires erasing the iPhone and restoring it. A backup created on beta software may not be compatible with an earlier public release, so do not assume your newest backup will work for a downgrade. Keep a completed backup from before beta installation as your fallback. Apple explains the compatibility warning and removal process on its iOS beta software removal page.
Choose where to back up your iPhone

Neither route is universally best. Choose based on the storage, network, computer, and cable available to you. Apple describes iCloud and computer backup options in its iPhone backup guide.
Back up with iCloud
- On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud.
- Tap iCloud Backup and choose Back Up Now. If the labels differ on your iOS version, follow the iCloud backup instructions shown in Settings.
- Wait for the backup to finish and confirm the most recent backup time is current before installing the beta.
Completion time depends on the amount of data and connection conditions; do not begin the beta installation until the iPhone shows that the backup has completed. Apple covers the iCloud route in its backup and restore instructions.

Back up to a Mac or Windows PC
On a Mac
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a compatible cable and unlock it if prompted. Approve the connection on the iPhone if it asks whether to trust the computer.
- On macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder and select the iPhone in the sidebar. On macOS Mojave or earlier, Apple’s instructions use iTunes.
- Select the option to back up the iPhone to this Mac. If you want the additional data included with an encrypted computer backup, select Encrypt local backup and set a password you can keep safe.
- Select Back Up Now. After it finishes, check Finder’s latest backup date and time to confirm completion.

On Windows
- Connect the iPhone to the PC with a compatible cable and open Apple Devices or iTunes, depending on what is installed.
- Select the iPhone, choose the computer-backup option, and start the backup using the controls displayed in the app.
- Wait for completion before proceeding with the beta installation.

Decide whether to encrypt a computer backup
Encryption adds certain sensitive information that an unencrypted computer backup does not include. Apple lists saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data, and call history among the additional contents. Encrypted backups do not contain Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode data.
You must enter the encryption password to use that backup. Apple warns that if you forget it, the password cannot be recovered for that backup. Record it somewhere secure before relying on the encrypted copy. See Apple’s encrypted backup guidance for details.

Verify and keep the pre-beta backup available
- For a Mac backup, confirm Finder displays the new backup’s date and time.
- For iCloud or Windows, confirm the relevant interface shows the backup completed and its latest backup information is current.
- Keep track of which copy was made before installing beta software. Do not replace or lose access to that fallback while using the beta.
Apple does not say every beta-era backup will fail on public iOS; its warning is that it may not be compatible. Preserving the pre-beta backup avoids depending on a backup made after the system changed.
If you return to public iOS
Apple says leaving beta software for the current public release requires erasing and restoring the iPhone. The restore flow uses a backup archived from an earlier iOS version; a beta-era backup may not work on the earlier public version. An iCloud restore takes place during iPhone setup, and Apple says an iPhone that is already set up must be erased before restoring from an iCloud backup. Follow Apple’s current beta removal instructions for the applicable recovery steps, which vary by device.

If a computer backup fails
Use the message or alert to narrow down the cause rather than assuming every failed backup has the same fix. Apple’s computer-backup troubleshooting guide recommends checking that the computer and backup software are current, confirming the wired connection and that the iPhone is recognized, and freeing computer storage if an alert reports insufficient space. If the issue persists, Apple suggests trying another computer or using iCloud when appropriate.
