Cloud saves can overwrite a newer local save, and a backup of the game installation may not include save files. The right steps depend on the game, platform, edition, and profile.
Quick checklist before installing DLC
- Identify the save: Confirm the game edition and the console or PC profile that owns the save.
- Close the game normally: Give it time to finish writing the latest save and syncing. Check the game’s save menu or your platform’s save-data screen for its timestamp or sync status.
- Choose a backup route the game supports: Check cloud-save status first; use a manual copy or a game-specific backup only if the platform and title provide that option.
- Check which copy is newer: Before uploading, downloading, or restoring, compare the cloud and device timestamps. These actions may replace one copy with another.
- Keep the backup unchanged: Leave one confirmed copy untouched while installing the DLC. Afterward, open the game and verify the expected profile and save before deleting or replacing anything.
A game installation backup is not necessarily a save backup. For example, Valve says Steam backups of Valve-created games exclude saved games, while locations for third-party games vary by developer: Steam Support: Using the Steam Backup Feature.
Nintendo Switch: check cloud and console timestamps
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s instructions describe downloading backups through a game’s software menu or System Settings; automatic downloads are also available when enabled. See Nintendo’s download instructions.
Before choosing upload or download, compare the most recent cloud and console save. If the console copy is newer, back that one up to the cloud; if the cloud copy is newer, download it. Nintendo warns that downloading a backup replaces the console save for that game, and the overwritten data cannot be recovered. Its guidance also says overwriting either copy cannot be undone: Nintendo Support: missing cloud backup files.

Nintendo states that if membership expires, users can regain access to cloud backups by starting a new membership within 180 days. This is the policy described in its support guidance; check Nintendo’s current terms for your account and region.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons island backup
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a game-specific island backup and restoration process, rather than a general-purpose Switch save-copy procedure. Nintendo says that after restoring island data on a replacement console, the game’s DLC must be downloaded on that console to access the content. Restoring a save and installing its associated DLC are separate tasks: Nintendo’s island backup and restore instructions.

Steam and PC: verify cloud support and locate the save
Steam Cloud applies only to games that use it. Steam says offline play delays syncing until the game is back online, which can lead to a conflict. Check the game’s cloud status and resolve any conflict deliberately rather than assuming the newest-looking copy is safely stored in both places. Steam also says it is unlikely that Support can recover lost saves: Steam Support: Steam Cloud.
If you want a manual backup, find the save location or export method documented for that specific game, then copy the save itself to separate storage. Do not assume Steam’s Backup Feature includes it: Valve says Valve-created game backups omit saves, and third-party save locations differ by developer. A manual copy is useful only if the game and system allow you to identify and copy the relevant data.

USB or other manual copies: use only supported procedures
Some systems and games allow saved data to be copied to USB storage; others restrict individual save-file copying or use a platform-managed process. Activision recommends backing up saved game data to online storage or a USB storage device before deleting it, but that recommendation does not establish a universal procedure for every console or title: Activision Support: Clearing Cache and Deleting Files.
Follow the instructions for your exact platform and game. Copy the save data—not just the installed game—and keep the copy separate from the device where you will install the DLC. No particular USB capacity or product is required by the cited guidance.

If the save seems missing after installation
Do not repeatedly launch and save across multiple devices while a cloud conflict is unresolved. A new sync could replace the copy you intended to keep. First check the active profile, game edition, local save timestamp, cloud timestamp, and any game-specific backup status; then use the platform’s instructions to choose the correct copy. On Switch, treat download and overwrite prompts carefully because Nintendo says replaced save data cannot be recovered.
