To back up your ChatGPT history, request an export from Settings > Data controls > Export data, download the ZIP when OpenAI notifies you, and check that it contains the conversations you want to keep. The download link expires 24 hours after it arrives, so save the file somewhere secure. An export is a copy for your records—not a way to restore deleted chats or recreate your old chat list in another account.
How to download your ChatGPT history
OpenAI’s export instructions cover eligible signed-in accounts. You can request the export in ChatGPT or through the OpenAI Privacy Portal. The export can take up to seven days to arrive; OpenAI sends a notification by email or SMS when it is ready. The download link expires 24 hours after receipt. - In ChatGPT: Open the profile menu, select Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. Confirm the request.
- Or use the Privacy Portal: Submit a data request and choose the option to download your data.
- Wait for OpenAI’s notification: Check the inbox, spam and promotions folders, or SMS, depending on where the notification is sent.
- Download while signed in to the requesting account: Use the same account that made the request, and download before the link expires.
- Open the ZIP and check it: Confirm the conversations you need are present before relying on the archive.
If the export does not arrive or the link expired
- If you already have an export request in progress, wait for it to finish rather than submitting another.
- If it has not arrived after seven days, contact OpenAI Support.
- If the download link has expired, request a new export.
- If you cannot sign in, use the Privacy Portal to submit the request.
Who can request an export?
OpenAI lists export availability for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro and eligible ChatGPT Edu users. Export is not available while logged out or for Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Edu availability depends on the user’s role, administrator enablement and data residency configuration. For organization-managed workspace data, contact the workspace owner.
What the downloaded archive contains—and what it cannot do
OpenAI says the ZIP contains chat history and other relevant account data. Check its contents rather than assuming a particular conversation is included. The export is not a restore point: OpenAI states that an export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted.

For a limited account-to-account reference workflow, OpenAI describes extracting the ZIP, finding conversations.json (larger exports may contain numbered JSON files), and uploading the relevant file into a new conversation on another personal account. ChatGPT can then use the uploaded file as reference. This does not merge the accounts, recreate the old conversations as separate sidebar entries, or transfer account settings, subscriptions, memories, GPTs, files or workspace access. Follow OpenAI’s instructions for transferring exported conversations if you need this limited reference workflow.
Export before moving personal data to a managed workspace
If you plan to move or merge a personal workspace into a Business, Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare workspace, request and check your personal-data export before the transition. OpenAI warns that once the personal workspace is removed, an earlier export link may no longer open and you may not be able to request another export from that workspace. The export’s limits still apply: it does not turn into a restorable copy of deleted chats or a full account migration.

Store the backup so it stays private and usable
An export may contain sensitive account information, so treat the ZIP like a private archive. Keep it somewhere access-controlled. If you want an offline copy, a removable drive is optional; it is not required to export ChatGPT data. CISA’s general advice is to encrypt removable media, store it safely and disconnect it when the backup is complete. It also recommends secure external storage or a properly vetted cloud service. Whichever option you choose, keep any encryption password or recovery key somewhere safe and separate enough that you can still recover the archive if you lose access to the device holding it. Before depending on the backup, make sure the ZIP opens and contains the conversations you intended to save.

Chat history and model-improvement settings are separate
Turning off Improve the model for everyone does not remove saved chats. OpenAI says new conversations remain in chat history while not being used to train ChatGPT. That setting controls model improvement; it does not download or back up your history. See the OpenAI Data Controls FAQ.
