Before installing an Android system update, run a fresh Google Account device backup, check that the selected categories show as saved, and verify Google Photos separately. Copy important downloads and app data that may not be included. Google says a device backup can take up to 24 hours, so start early and confirm completion rather than assuming tapping Back up now finishes it immediately.
What an Android backup does—and does not—cover
Google’s standard Android backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS and MMS messages. Coverage varies: Google warns that not all apps can back up or restore all their settings and data. Treat the backup as a useful safety copy, not a complete archive of everything on the phone.
Photos and videos use Google Photos’ separate backup control. Downloads, media in hidden folders, some apps installed outside Google Play, and some app data may not transfer in device migration. Those migration notes are a reason to inspect important items; they are not a definitive list of what every phone’s device backup excludes. Google’s general backup guidance also says that some data may only be restored during device setup.
Google’s help pages explain backup and restoration generally; they do not describe a special backup mode for system updates or establish that routine updates erase user data. A backup is sensible preparation, but it cannot guarantee recovery from every update problem.

Run and verify a Google Account device backup
- Open Backup settings. Go to Settings → Google → All services → Backup and restore → Backup. Labels vary by Android version and manufacturer; if the path differs, search Settings for “Backup.”
- Check the account and backup choices. Confirm that the displayed Google Account is one you can access. Turn on backup if needed and review the data categories selected. Google recommends protecting backup data with a screen lock such as a PIN, pattern, or password.
- Start a manual backup. Tap Back up now. Open Backup details to review the selected categories and their status.
- Wait for saved status. Google says, “Your Google One backup can take up to 24 hours.” That is the maximum duration Google says it may take, not a prediction that every backup will need a full day. In Backup details, look for On beneath the data types you selected to confirm they are saved.
Check Google Photos and files separately
Photos and videos
Open Google Photos and check its backup setting and status. Do not assume that seeing a successful phone backup means every photo and video is backed up; Google handles these through Photos separately.
Downloads and app-specific information
Review downloads and any files or app data you cannot afford to lose. If an important item is not represented in Backup details or its app’s own backup, make a separate copy. Google One Help describes uploading files and folders to Google Drive manually. For app-specific data, follow the app developer’s backup instructions.

If backup will not start or something appears missing
- Check that the phone is online; connect to Wi-Fi when possible, and make sure the battery is charged.
- Check available Google Account storage. Google’s Android Help page states that a Google Account includes 15 GB at no charge; account storage policies can change, so check your current account allowance.
- Follow Google’s prompts to update or open Google One if directed.
- Check the destination for the kind of data you are looking for: Google Contacts for contacts, Google Photos for photos and videos, and Drive for files you uploaded manually.
- If you later need to restore a backup, note that Google says the process varies by device and Android version. A backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower version.
How long does Android backup take?
Google says a Google One device backup can take up to 24 hours. Begin well before the planned update and verify that the selected categories show as saved in Backup details; the button press alone is not proof that the backup is complete.

Google One Help says device backup data other than photos and videos is erased if the device is not used for 57 days. This is a retention rule, not a recommended waiting period before an update.
