Keep the same WhatsApp number for the move, or change it on the old phone first.
Choose the right way to move your chats
The best route depends on the phones you are moving between, whether the old phone still works, and whether you can access the account used for a cloud backup. WhatsApp supports cross-platform chat transfers, but the precise instructions depend on the source and destination devices; use WhatsApp’s current device-specific guidance for those moves.

Prepare the old phone before you switch
Check the number and account
For a cloud restore, the phone number and cloud account must match the ones used to create the backup: Google Account on Android, or Apple Account/iCloud on iPhone. If you are changing your WhatsApp number, use WhatsApp’s number-change process on the old phone before moving. WhatsApp warns that registering the new number on the replacement device first can cost you access to the old chat history. See WhatsApp’s account transfer instructions.
Confirm the latest backup
On iPhone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup and check the displayed time and size of the latest backup. The backup is your recovery point: messages sent or received afterward are not included. If you need videos on the new iPhone, enable Include videos before creating the latest backup. On Android, open WhatsApp’s Chat Backup settings, select the Google Account you intend to use, and check that there is enough available storage before starting. WhatsApp recommends Wi-Fi because backups can use mobile data. Keep the phone powered and connected while a large or first backup runs. Understand what a cloud backup preserves
- WhatsApp says Google Account backups are tied to both the phone number and Google Account that created them. A new Google Account backup overwrites the previous one, and you cannot choose an older backup to restore. WhatsApp’s help guidance also warns that Google may automatically delete a backup that has not been updated for five months. Google Account backup details.
- WhatsApp says iCloud keeps one backup per account; each new backup replaces the previous one. A backup cannot restore messages created after its latest successful run. iPhone restore guidance; WhatsApp restore troubleshooting.
- WhatsApp cloud backups are not protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption unless you turn on end-to-end encrypted backups. If you enabled that protection, retain the correct password or 64-digit key; you need it to restore the backup. Android backup details; Restore troubleshooting.
- On iPhone, WhatsApp says backup coverage includes community messages and media, as well as Channel updates, with a media exception for non-admins. Videos are restored only if Include videos was on before the latest backup. WhatsApp iPhone restore guidance.
Back up or transfer, step by step
Android: back up to a Google Account
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp’s Settings > Chats > Chat backup screen.
- Choose the Google Account you will use on the new phone, and check that it has sufficient available storage.
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi, then start a backup. Keep the phone powered until WhatsApp reports that the backup has completed.
- Check the backup’s completion status or timestamp before setting up WhatsApp on the replacement phone. On the new Android phone, use the same Google Account and WhatsApp number when prompted to restore.
WhatsApp’s Android backup is managed through Google Account storage. Because a new backup replaces the prior one, confirm that the backup you intend to use has completed before moving on. Android backup setup; Google Account backup details.

Android: use WhatsApp Chat Transfer
Direct transfer avoids relying on a Google Account backup, but it has prerequisites: both phones must run Android 6 or later, use the same WhatsApp number, have Wi-Fi enabled, remain near each other, and be connected to power. Keep both devices nearby and unlocked, and leave WhatsApp open as the transfer runs. WhatsApp Android Chat Transfer instructions.
- On the old phone, open WhatsApp’s Settings > Chats > Transfer chats option and start the transfer.
- On the new Android phone, install and open WhatsApp, verify the same number, and follow the transfer prompts to connect the phones.
- Keep the phones close, powered, and in WhatsApp until the process finishes. Check the new phone’s chats before removing WhatsApp or data from the old one.
Follow the prompts shown in WhatsApp for your phones; the transfer flow is completed during setup on the destination device. WhatsApp’s warning is explicit: “Until you confirm the data has successfully transferred to your new phone, don’t delete data, reset, or uninstall WhatsApp on your old phone.” Official transfer instructions.

iPhone: create and restore an iCloud backup
- On the old iPhone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Check the latest backup time and size. Turn on Include videos before backing up if you want videos included.
- Start a new backup over a stable connection and wait for it to finish. Ensure there is enough free space in both iCloud and the iPhone.
- On the new iPhone, sign in to the Apple Account where the backup is stored and install WhatsApp.
- Open WhatsApp, verify the same phone number, then choose the restore option when it appears. WhatsApp says this prompt is available after reinstalling and verifying; it cannot be launched later from WhatsApp Settings.
- Wait for restoration to finish, then check the chats and media you expect to see.
WhatsApp cannot restore chat history for you from its servers because chat history is not stored there. If there is no usable backup or completed transfer, WhatsApp does not have a server-side copy to recover. iPhone restore guidance; Restore troubleshooting.
Moving between Android and iPhone
WhatsApp confirms that chat history can be transferred across platforms, but the correct setup depends on the particular source and destination phones. Start from WhatsApp’s current changing-phones instructions and follow the platform-specific steps for your pair rather than assuming a Google or iCloud backup can be restored directly across operating systems.

Verify the move before wiping the old phone
After restore or transfer, open WhatsApp on the new phone and check that the expected conversations and recent messages are present. Review important media as well, especially videos if you expected them to be in an iPhone backup. Keep the old phone’s WhatsApp data intact until you have confirmed the new phone is usable; do not reset, trade in, uninstall WhatsApp, or delete its data while a transfer is incomplete. - Check the connection: switch to stable Wi-Fi or try another network, and avoid interrupting the backup or restore. WhatsApp recommends Wi-Fi for Google Account backups because they can consume mobile data. WhatsApp troubleshooting; Google backup guidance.
- Check free space: make room in the relevant cloud account and on the phone. WhatsApp says iPhone restoration needs enough capacity in both iCloud and iPhone storage; insufficient device space can lead to a partial backup or failed restore. iPhone restore guidance.
- Recheck account and number: use the same Google Account or Apple Account, as applicable, and the phone number associated with the backup. If the old phone has dual SIMs, WhatsApp suggests checking that the active SIM corresponds to the WhatsApp number. WhatsApp troubleshooting.
- For an encrypted backup: enter the correct password or 64-digit key. Without it, the encrypted backup cannot be restored. Restore troubleshooting.
- If an iPhone backup is corrupted: WhatsApp says it cannot restore that backup. Preserve the old phone’s data if it is still available while you assess other supported transfer options. WhatsApp troubleshooting.
WhatsApp’s help pages do not generally show publication dates, so their storage and recovery rules should be treated as current help-center guidance rather than dated statistics. The five-month Google-backup warning above is stated by WhatsApp without a publication year. For an old number, WhatsApp’s guidance says an account is deleted after 365 days of inactivity; this is relevant only if the account has been inactive, not as a normal step in a phone upgrade.
