Before a studio or publisher changes a service, identify the exact game edition and platform, confirm whether its latest save has synchronized, and make a separate copy of any save data the game lets you access. Keep the original untouched. Save locations and export options differ by game and launcher, and a backup does not guarantee that another version or service will accept the file.
Start with the exact game and platform
There is no universal PC game-save folder. The location and access method can depend on the game, its edition, the storefront or launcher, and the save system the developer chose. A path that applies to one edition may not apply to another.
Before copying anything, note the game edition, storefront or launcher, and operating system. Check the game’s official support page or service-change notice for instructions labeled “save files,” “cloud saves,” “export,” “migration,” or “restore.” Follow those instructions over a generic path found online.
Check cloud synchronization before making a copy
Cloud saves can provide another copy, but they are not proof that the latest progress is safely stored there. Steam says synchronization can remain pending after offline play; when the device reconnects, a conflict may appear. Check the Steam Cloud status and resolve any prompt deliberately rather than assuming the cloud copy is newest. Steam also says its support team cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts. Cloud behavior is game-specific. Steamworks documentation explains that developers configure which files synchronize and how platform behavior works, so Steam Cloud’s presence in the client does not establish that every game saves the same data or synchronizes it in the same way: Steamworks Steam Cloud documentation. Ubisoft says cloud-save synchronization is supported by only some Ubisoft Connect PC games; check the affected title’s support information: Ubisoft cloud-save synchronization help.
Make an independent backup
- Close the game normally. Wait for any launcher synchronization to finish first, and resolve a conflict only after checking which copy contains the latest progress.
- Use the game’s official save instructions. Locate the specified folder or use the documented export feature. Do not assume a folder path for a different edition or storefront applies.
- Copy, do not move or replace. Put the save folder or exported file in a separate location and leave the original intact. A second drive is optional; any destination should let you verify that the copied files exist and can be read.
- Label the copy clearly. Include the game, platform, and date in the backup name. If practical, retain more than one dated copy so a later save or mistaken overwrite does not erase the earlier state.
- Before restoring, back up the current state too. Follow the game’s restore procedure and keep a copy of the files present before making changes.
Steam’s Backup Feature is for copies of installed game files, not a guarantee that an individual save is included. Steam directs players to game-specific information or the developer to find save locations: Steam Backup Feature help.

Platform-specific details
Steam
Steam Support identifies the Windows userdata directory as a location for Steam Cloud files and describes how synchronization and conflicts work. Treat that as a place to investigate, not a universal save path: individual games and developers configure cloud files differently. Check the game-specific instructions and preserve a separate copy before changing launchers or local files. Ubisoft Connect PC
For the Ubisoft PC games covered by its procedure, Ubisoft says a player with a backup can restore an earlier saved-game file. Its default Ubisoft Connect PC savegames directory is C:Program Files (x86)UbisoftUbisoft Game Launchersavegames, with an account-ID folder below it. The instructions say that for games with cloud saves, the restored local save can be used the next time the game starts. This is a title-specific procedure, not a path or cloud-support guarantee for every Ubisoft game. Read Ubisoft’s restore instructions and confirm the affected game’s cloud support separately.

Xbox PC Game Pass and Microsoft Store games
Xbox PC and Microsoft Store games may manage saves differently from ordinary folders. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documents multiple save approaches, with the implementation depending on the title: Microsoft Game Saves documentation. Obsidian provides one concrete example: its Windows Store or Xbox PC Game Pass saves are managed by Xbox, while its Steam version has an export option. - Local access: Can you reach the save folder or use an official export feature for this edition?
- Cloud status: Does this game support cloud saves, and can you confirm the latest progress has synchronized?
- Restore instructions: Does the developer explain how to put a backup back in place?
- Compatibility: Does the official notice explain whether saves carry over to a replacement service, launcher, or game version?
These checks matter more than a platform-wide assumption: the available documentation does not establish that any one launcher makes all saves locally accessible or portable. A copied file is useful insurance, but only the game’s own migration guidance can establish whether it remains compatible after a service change.
