Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore resetting a Garmin watch, sync it with Garmin Connect to upload recorded activities. If your model supports Garmin’s Back Up & Restore feature, create a separate settings backup, sync again, and confirm the backup has uploaded before erasing the watch. The feature is available only on select watches, and reset options vary by model.
First, check whether your Garmin model supports settings backups
Garmin’s Back Up & Restore feature is available on some watches, not all of them. Find your exact model’s owner’s manual and search its “System Settings” section for the feature. Garmin also describes compatibility and the backup process in its Back Up and Restore guide for select watches. Avoid relying on another model’s menu names or reset behavior.
Sync activity data, then create and upload a settings backup
- Sync before resetting. Open Garmin Connect and sync the watch so recorded activities upload to your account. Garmin explicitly recommends syncing before a reset in its Venu 2 reset instructions; check your model’s manual for its exact reset guidance.
- Make a manual backup if your watch supports it. On the watch, open Settings > System > Back Up & Restore or Restore & Reset, then choose Back Up Now. Menu wording and availability can vary by model. Garmin says automatic backups are normally created daily, usually overnight while the watch is mostly idle; for a reset, use the manual option rather than relying on the schedule.
- Sync a second time. After a manual backup, the watch displays “Upload Pending” until it syncs with your Garmin Connect account. Sync again and wait for the upload to finish before proceeding to a destructive reset.
- Follow the reset instructions for your exact model. Choose the reset option with care: the effects of similarly named options are not universal across Garmin watches.
What a Garmin settings backup includes—and excludes
On supported watches, Garmin’s feature can back up activity and app lists, activity settings, watch-face customization, glances, Connect IQ content, saved alarms and timers, and paired sensors. User profile information, heart-rate and power zones, and sleep schedule data are saved in Garmin Connect rather than in the device backup.
Garmin Pay wallet information is not included in the settings backup. Garmin says the wallet must be recreated if the watch is removed from the account during a reset. Depending on the watch and reset option, stored music or other user data may also be removed.

Choose the reset option carefully
The consequences depend on the model and the option selected. For example, Garmin’s Venu 2 instructions distinguish Delete Data and Reset Settings, which removes user-entered information and activity history, from Reset Default Settings, which preserves user-entered information and activity history. The Venu 2 page also says the delete-and-reset option removes the Garmin Pay wallet and stored music. Treat this as a Venu 2 example, not a universal description of Garmin reset menus.
Garmin’s separate guide, Can I Copy or Back Up My Information and Settings on My Garmin Device?, is another place to check what applies to your device.

Restore settings after the reset
After pairing a compatible watch again, Garmin Connect may prompt you to apply a backup stored in your account. Garmin also documents restore routes through Garmin Connect for watches with and without Real Time Settings, and through Garmin Express for a connected watch: choose Tools & Content > Utilities > Choose Backup, select a backup, start the restore, and let the watch sync finish. Garmin says only the most recent backup for a device is saved. Restoring settings does not roll the watch’s software back to an earlier version.
