You may be able to preserve a game save before its servers shut down, but there is no universal export button—and a platform backup cannot capture progress held only on the publisher’s servers. First find out where the game stores your progress, then confirm any cloud sync is complete, separately copy accessible local saves where supported, and check the publisher’s shutdown notice for an export or migration option.
Can I back up a game save before the servers shut down?
Often, but what you can save depends on where the game keeps its data. A game may use a local save on your PC or console, a platform cloud save, publisher-hosted server data, or a mixture. A copy protects only the data actually included in that copy. If characters, inventory, or progress exist only on the game’s servers, copying a local file or platform save will not preserve them.
Start with the game’s official shutdown announcement and support page. Look for a deadline and any instructions for data export, account migration or linking, cross-save, or offline play. The game is not specified here, so whether any of those options exist—and when they expire—must be confirmed in its own notice.
Use this order before access ends
- Identify the exact game and edition. Record the platform and the publisher’s stated shutdown date. Different editions or game generations may handle saves differently.
- Determine where progress is stored. Check the game’s official support information for local-save locations, cloud support, and whether account or world data is server-side.
- Confirm the platform copy is current. Check the specific game’s cloud-save support and synchronization status. Let syncing finish and handle any conflict deliberately.
- Copy accessible local saves separately. Follow the developer’s directions, keep the original intact, and store a dated copy somewhere you control if the platform and game permit it.
- Follow the publisher’s preservation instructions. If it offers an export or migration, complete it before the deadline. Test a restored copy only if the game supports that process.
Where are my game saves stored?
There is no single answer for every game, even on the same platform. A platform cloud feature may be optional for a title, and a game can split local settings or save files from online account progress. Check the exact game’s documentation and shutdown notice rather than assuming that a backup of the game installation also backs up its save.

How to back up saves on Steam
Check Steam Cloud for the specific game
In Steam, open the game’s Properties and check whether Steam Cloud is available and enabled for that title. Let Steam finish synchronizing before closing or uninstalling the game. If Steam presents a sync conflict, read which copy is newer and choose carefully: Valve warns that resolving a conflict incorrectly can lose data or progress. When Steam Cloud is disabled for a game, Valve says progress that would normally be saved through the cloud remains local to the machine where it was made. See Valve’s Steam Cloud guidance.
Copy the local save separately
Find the save location using the game developer’s support site or documentation. Valve notes that third-party games’ save locations vary because each developer determines where saves are stored; it recommends checking the game’s Steam Community forum or website, or asking the developer. Copy the save folder separately to storage you control, retain the original, and date the copy. Do not overwrite your only known-good copy with a different version. What Steam’s “Backup game files” does—and does not do
Steam’s Backup game files feature backs up qualifying game installation files; it is not a universal save exporter. Valve says it excludes saves and other custom files for Valve-created games, and many third-party installer or downloader titles are incompatible. Do not treat an installation backup as proof that the save has been preserved. A universal restore procedure for separately copied saves is not established: restoring can depend on the game and its version.
How to back up PlayStation saves
Downloaded and streamed games store saves differently
Sony distinguishes downloaded PlayStation games from streamed PlayStation Plus games. Downloaded-game saves are stored on the PS5 or PS4 console; streamed-game saves are stored on PlayStation. Sony documents using PlayStation Plus cloud storage to transfer between these save types. Follow the current save-management steps in Sony’s guide to transferring saves between streaming and downloaded games; menu names may change with system software.

PS5 storage options depend on the save generation
Sony lists PS5 game saved data as available through cloud storage only, while PS4 game saved data can use cloud storage or a USB drive. Cloud storage requires PlayStation Plus. On PS5, a USB drive can therefore be useful for supported PS4 saves, but it is not a general export route for PS5 saves or publisher-server data. Check the current steps in Sony’s PS5 storage guide.
Match the method to the game’s generation and save type. Even a successful console-save copy does not establish that online progress, inventory, or account state hosted by the publisher is included.

How to back up Nintendo Switch saves
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and eligibility is determined per game. Before relying on a backup, check the game’s eShop Software Details, its Nintendo Store product information, or the software’s Options menu for cloud-save support. Nintendo’s instructions are at Save Data Cloud on Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo also says that saves for Switch software compatible with Switch 2 can be backed up and downloaded on either system. However, features added through Switch 2 updates or edition upgrades may not be available when that save is used on Switch. Check the specific game’s compatibility and edition details before depending on a transfer.

What about Xbox or other platforms?
Save export and backup steps differ by platform, game, and save type. The guidance here does not establish current Xbox procedures, so do not assume that an Xbox cloud save can be manually exported or that a particular drive will preserve it. Check official support for the platform and the game’s shutdown notice for instructions that apply to your exact setup.
Does a Steam game backup include save files?
Not reliably. Steam’s Backup game files feature is for qualifying installation files, not a universal save backup. Valve says third-party game save locations vary by developer, so check the game’s documentation and copy an accessible save separately if supported.
What you can and cannot preserve
A local or platform-cloud copy is useful only for the data it contains. If the publisher holds the authoritative character, inventory, or world state on its servers, preservation depends on a publisher-provided export, migration, account-linking option, offline mode, or continued service. Do not assume that an offline copy will work after shutdown: the game may still require online authentication, and the unnamed game’s post-shutdown behavior is not established.
Keep local originals and dated copies distinct, and follow the game developer’s restoration instructions rather than experimenting on your only backup. If the publisher offers migration or export, complete it before the stated cutoff; an announcement may set a separate deadline for that process.
