Back up what you can access—but first find out where the game stores each kind of progress. A platform cloud save or local file may preserve some data, while character progression, inventory, and other account data may exist only on the publisher’s servers. Check the game’s shutdown notice for an official export, migration, or offline-play option, then make and verify copies before any deadline.
First, find out where your progress is stored
Identify the exact game, platform, and mode you use: for example, a downloaded or streamed PlayStation game, a PC installation, or a Switch title. Then check the game’s official support page and shutdown announcement for instructions about save downloads, account migration, cross-progression, offline play, and deadlines.
Do not assume one save file contains everything. Achievements, purchases, inventory, and character progression can have different storage and transfer rules. A platform save utility may back up local game data without capturing progress held in the game operator’s account system. Zen Studios’ end-of-support terms, for example, distinguish server-stored progression and inventory from locally stored content; that is an example for that title, not a universal rule. Zen Studios’ terms
- Local save: Files stored on your computer or console, if the game exposes them.
- Platform cloud save: A copy managed by Steam, Nintendo, or PlayStation, subject to the game and platform’s support.
- Server-side progress: Account data controlled by the game publisher. It may not be available through platform save tools.
- World or server save: A publisher-provided archive for a hosted world, if the shutdown plan offers one.
PC: confirm Steam Cloud, then copy the actual files
Check whether this game uses Steam Cloud
Steam Cloud is configurable by developers, and some games do not use it for saves. Check the game’s Steam store page for the Steam Cloud indicator and confirm synchronization has finished before closing the game. Steam lists default locations for Steam Cloud files as C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata on macOS, and ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata on Linux. These are general Steam Cloud locations, not a guarantee that a particular game’s save is there. See Steam Cloud support.

If Steam reports a conflict between local and cloud data, compare the timestamps and choose the version that reflects your latest play. Do not dismiss the conflict without checking: selecting the wrong copy could replace the newer save. Steam Support says it can explain how Cloud works but cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts.
Copy save files separately
Steam’s installation backup feature is not necessarily a save archive. Valve says backups of Valve-created games do not include saved games, while third-party games may store saves in developer-chosen locations. Follow the game’s official save-location or export instructions if available, and copy the save files themselves to a separate folder or removable drive. Keep the original files unchanged. Nintendo Switch: cloud backup is not the same as console transfer
Check Save Data Cloud eligibility and backup status
Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch Save Data Cloud covers compatible software and requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check compatibility for the specific game and inspect its backup status or timestamp; support for one title does not mean every game’s save is covered. Nintendo may display “This software doesn’t support Save Data Cloud backup” for incompatible software. Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud instructions
Treat nearby-console transfer as a move
Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer requires both consoles to be online and the same Nintendo Account linked to the user on each system. It does not create an archival copy: Nintendo says, “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” A transfer can also overwrite save data on the receiving console, which Nintendo warns cannot be undone. Do not use this feature expecting to keep a second copy on the source system. Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer instructions

PlayStation: streamed and downloaded saves are handled differently
Sony says saves for streamed PlayStation Plus games are stored on PlayStation, while saves for downloaded games are stored on the PS5 or PS4 console. Saves do not automatically move between streamed and downloaded versions. Sony describes using PlayStation Plus cloud storage to upload and download saves when moving between those types. This covers PlayStation save handling; it does not establish that a game’s server-side progression can be exported. Follow Sony’s current steps at Save and transfer PlayStation Plus game progress.

Look for an explicit offer to download save data, migrate an account, convert a save for offline play, or use an offline patch. A server closure does not by itself mean the publisher will provide an export. Follow the game-specific notice rather than assuming that a platform backup can capture publisher-controlled data.

PixARK illustrates why timing and completeness matter. Snail Games announced that retired official server saves would be available for download only during a limited transition window: the shutdown was listed for August 24, 2026, and the download service until September 24, 2026, Beijing Time (UTC+8). The announcement described an August 3 snapshot and an August 24 final snapshot, with different completeness. If a publisher offers an archive, download it promptly and keep the original archive in more than one place. PixARK Legacy server-save announcement

Choose a backup method by what it preserves
| Method | What it can preserve | Who controls it | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copy local PC save files | Files accessible at the game’s save location | You control the copied files | Does not automatically include server-side account progress; locations vary by game. |
| Steam Cloud | Cloud-enabled game files | Steam and the game’s developer | Game support is configurable; sync conflicts require choosing the correct version. |
| Nintendo Save Data Cloud | Save data for compatible Switch 2 and Switch software | Nintendo | Requires Nintendo Switch Online; some software is incompatible. |
| Nintendo nearby-console transfer | A save moved to another nearby console | You initiate the transfer between consoles | Moves rather than copies; source save is deleted, and target data can be overwritten. |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | PlayStation saves used to transfer between streamed and downloaded game types | PlayStation | Does not establish that publisher-side progression is exportable. |
| Publisher-provided shutdown archive | Only the data and snapshot the publisher makes available | Game publisher | May be time-limited or incomplete; follow the title’s notice. |
Verify the backup before the game closes
- Check the official shutdown instructions. Note the exact deadline, file format, supported destination, and whether the archive is a snapshot rather than a complete current world.
- Finish any platform sync. Check the game’s cloud status or timestamp and resolve conflicts by comparing which copy is newer and matches your last session.
- Make a separate copy of accessible local files. For PC, use the game’s official save path where available; do not treat an installation backup as proof that saves were included.
- Keep the original and the copied archive. Store an additional copy somewhere separate, such as another drive, when you have local files or a publisher archive to preserve.
- Confirm what the backup contains. Check filenames, dates, and the publisher’s description. A file copy is not proof that account inventory or server-only progress is included.
