Back up game saves and game installations separately. First confirm each game’s latest save has synced, then use the platform’s documented save-export and game-backup options, copy eligible files to storage separate from the original device, retain your account and purchase records, and test the copies. A backup preserves only the data it actually contains; it does not guarantee that a storefront will still let you authenticate, reinstall, or play a game.
What to back up—and what a backup cannot promise
A game library has several parts that are easy to confuse: the save that records progress, the installed game files, and any settings or custom content. A cloud save or platform backup may cover only some of them. Treat each as a separate item and check the game’s own platform documentation before deleting, moving, or reinstalling anything.
- Saves: progress data, which may be stored in the cloud, on the console or computer, on removable storage, or on a game cartridge.
- Game files: installed data or an archive of it. A copy may be incomplete, incompatible with another device, or dependent on the original platform.
- Account and purchase records: account access, recovery details, and proof of purchases can matter if a platform requires authentication or redownload access.
Preserving files is not the same as preserving the right or technical ability to run them. A storefront may change redownload access, authentication, or online services separately from sales. Keep backups, but do not assume an archive is an independently installable copy.
Use this workflow for each platform and game
- Identify the platform and title. Do not assume one platform’s backup method applies to another, or that every game on the same platform stores saves the same way.
- Check cloud-save support and sync status. Confirm that the specific game’s newest save has synchronized before switching devices or making another copy. Resolve any conflict carefully: Steam warns that conflicting local and cloud versions can result in lost progress. See Steam Cloud support for its guidance.
- Find and separately copy or export saves. Use the game’s or platform’s documented save location and export procedure. Do not assume a game-installation backup includes saves, settings, or custom content.
- Back up eligible game files using the platform’s supported method. Check what the method includes and whether the particular game is compatible. Keep any required installer, launcher, or account information with your records.
- Store a copy away from the original device. A second copy on the same console or computer is vulnerable to the same device failure. Use storage compatible with the platform and retain the original files until you have checked the copy.
- Test the copy or documented restore process. Confirm that files are present and readable, and follow the platform’s restore instructions where possible. Testing an archive does not prove that a future storefront or authentication service will remain available.
- Retain account and purchase records. Keep access to the account and its recovery information, along with purchase history. These records do not guarantee service availability, but a file copy alone may not satisfy platform authentication requirements.
Platform-specific examples and limits
Steam: check cloud behavior and back up saves separately
Steam Cloud support is determined game by game: developers choose whether to use it and which user files are uploaded. If cloud saving is unavailable or disabled for a game, saves may exist only locally; check that title’s store page and behavior rather than assuming cloud coverage. Steam also warns about conflicts between local and cloud versions. Its Steam Backup Feature instructions describe backing up eligible installed game files, but the feature has limits: third-party installers may be incompatible, Valve game backups omit saves and custom files, and save locations for third-party games vary. Make a separate save copy and test the resulting backups.

Nintendo 3DS: distinguish digital software from cartridge games
Nintendo says 3DS downloadable-software saves are stored on the SD card, while saves for cartridge games are stored on the cartridge. Its downloadable software FAQ also warns that deleting downloaded software can delete its save data. Consult the Nintendo 3DS Operations Manual for save-data backup support and limitations. Preserve the correct SD card and check any game-specific restrictions before removing software.
Wii U and 3DS eShop: sales, redownloads, and online services changed separately
Nintendo ended new purchases on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops on March 27, 2023. It said previously purchased content and updates would remain available for redownload for the foreseeable future; that statement was not a permanent guarantee. Nintendo separately ended online play and other online communication functions for Wii U and 3DS software on April 8, 2024. These dated changes show why a sales closure should not be treated as synonymous with immediate loss of downloads, or as a promise that downloads or online functions will continue indefinitely. PlayStation 3: an older manual documents some USB save transfers
Sony’s PlayStation 3 System Software Manual for CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B documents copying or moving certain saved data to USB mass storage. It is a legacy-model manual, not a current guide for PS4 or PS5, and it does not establish that every game save can be copied. Follow documentation for the exact console model and game.

Before you delete, move, or replace anything
- Confirm the newest save is synced or safely copied; do not rely on a cloud icon or general platform support alone.
- Check whether deleting or reinstalling the game can also delete its save data.
- Verify that the backup includes the specific data you care about—saves, custom content, or settings may be excluded.
- Keep a second copy on separate storage and check that it can be read.
- Preserve account access and purchase records, while recognizing neither records nor backups guarantee future service.
